Hello and welcome to another edition of Quick Buddhist Lectures for Learning,
Where we take a short amount of time to learn about a figure,
A concept,
Or a sect within Buddhism so that if we ever encounter it,
We may know it better.
Today,
We will be turning our attention to another of the Buddha's chief disciples,
Sariputra,
Also known as Sariputta,
Who was a master of wisdom and a figure of profound intellectual prowess.
His life and teachings continue to illuminate the path of Dhamma for us today.
Sariputta,
Born as Upatissa,
Was a contemporary of the Buddha and a significant figure in the early Sangha,
Which is the Buddhist monastic community.
His close friend from childhood,
Moggallana,
Was also among the Buddha's most revered disciples.
Born to Sari,
Who was a Brahmin woman,
And hence Sariputta,
He was an exceptionally curious and intelligent individual from a young age.
Sariputta,
Like his friend Moggallana,
Was initially a disciple of Sanjaya Belathaputta,
A wandering ascetic.
However,
An encounter with the Dhamma and one of the Buddha's first five disciples led Sariputta to the teachings of the Buddha.
That disciple shared with Sariputta the essence of the Buddha's teaching in a simple verse,
Leading to Sariputta attaining the first stage of awakening,
Which is the state of stream-enterer,
Or sotapanna.
Upon hearing the Buddha's teaching from Sariputta,
Moggallana also decided to follow the Buddha.
They both received ordination from the Buddha and became bhikkhus,
Or monks.
Sariputta achieved the final stage of awakening,
Becoming an arahant,
Supposedly two weeks after his ordination.
I suppose it helps to have the Buddha as your direct teacher,
Though.
Historically,
Sariputta played a critical role in the Sangha.
He was renowned for his deep wisdom,
Exceptional understanding of the Dhamma,
And his ability to teach effectively.
The Buddha even referred to Sariputta as the general of the Dhamma,
Due to his comprehensive understanding and articulate explanation of the teachings.
Sariputta was known for his ability to elucidate the complex points of the Dhamma with clarity and precision.
Sariputta's teachings often centered around the core principles of Buddhism,
Such as the Four Noble Truths,
The Eightfold Path,
And the doctrine of dependent origination.
He emphasized the practice of mindfulness and meditation as a means to gain insight and wisdom.
As you can tell from that,
The more it changes,
The more it stays the same.
These are subjects with which we are still discussing.
Sariputta's numerous discourses,
Many of which are preserved in the Sutta Pitaka,
Which is part of the Pali Canon,
Continue to guide followers of the Dhamma.
In fact,
My favorite sutta in the Pali Canon is called One by One as They Occurred,
Which is a sutta about Sariputra.
One of the most famous discourses is the Heartwood Discourse,
Or the Sariputta Sutra,
Where he explains the goal of the holy life in Buddhism.
He compares the holy life to a tree,
And nirvana,
The ultimate goal,
To the heartwood,
The innermost part of the tree.
Like the heartwood,
Nirvana is the most precious and essential aspect of the Buddhist spiritual path.
Sariputta passed away peacefully before the Buddha did,
Displaying his profound wisdom and calm even in his final moments.
His life and death remind us that even the wisest and most awakened beings are subject to the laws of impermanence.
The life and teachings of Sariputta offer invaluable lessons to us.
His dedication to understanding the Dhamma and his ability to clarify complex teachings offer a model of intellectual pursuit and wisdom.
His compassionate and patient demeanor reminds us and teaches us the importance of these virtues on the spiritual path.
Thank you so much for joining me today.
