Hello and welcome to another edition of Quick Buddhist Lectures where we quickly examine one of the characters,

Documents,

Or schools of thought within Buddhism to give you an introductory explanation and understanding of some of them so that if you ever run across them in your studies,

Your practice,

Or in conversation,

You know who they are.

Today we will be talking about the Lotus-Born Master or Padmasambhava.

Padmasambhava,

Also known as Guru Rinpoche,

Was an 8th century Indian tantric master who was instrumental in the founding of Tibetan Buddhism.

Born in the region of Oryana,

He was said to have miraculously appeared out of a lotus flower.

As a young man,

He studied with various Indian and Central Asian masters,

Becoming adept in the practice of Vajrayana or tantric Buddhism.

Invited to Tibet by the Tibetan king Trisong Detsen,

Padmasambhava played a key role in the construction of the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet,

Samye Monastery.

He also worked closely with the Indian scholar Shantakarishita and the Tibetan translator Varyotansana to translate numerous Buddhist texts from Sanskrit into Tibetan,

Laying the foundation for the rich textual tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

One of the most significant aspects of Padmasambhava's teachings is his emphasis on the practice of tantra,

Which are a set of esoteric practices that involve the use of ritual,

Visualization,

And mantra recitation to accelerate your path to awakening.

He introduced many tantric teachings and practices to Tibet,

Including what is considered to be the highest yoga tantra systems of deity yoga,

Which involves visualizing oneself as a deity to transform ordinary perception and identity.

Padmasambhava is also known for his mastery of Dzogchen or the great perfection,

A unique system of meditation and realization within the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.

His teachings on Dzogchen emphasize the direct recognition of one's innate Buddha nature,

Transcending all dualistic concepts and ordinary perceptions of reality.

Padmasambhava,

Of course,

Had an immense impact on Tibetan Buddhism,

Being the founder of Tibetan Buddhism.

His teachings and practices form the core of the Nyingma tradition,

The oldest of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism,

And furthermore his influence extends beyond the Nyingma school,

As his teachings on tantra and Dzogchen have been integrated into the practices of the other three schools,

Kagyu,

Sakya,

And Gelug.

In conclusion,

Padmasambhava's life and teachings offer us a profound example of the transformative path of Buddhism.

As we strive to cultivate our understanding of the Buddhist teachings,

If we are a Vajrayana Buddhist,

He is a profound teacher,

An example that we can use.

Thank you for joining me in this quick introductory exploration of Padmasambhava.

May we all continue to walk the path of wisdom and compassion guided by these great masters and teachings.

I hope you're enjoying this quick Buddhist lecture series,

Introducing you to the variety of characters,

Works,

And schools that Buddhism offers.

Thank you so much.

Meet your Teacher
