Letting Go
by Silas Day
A short letting go meditation that touches into the nature of impermance and how we can use the breath and mind to unknot anything that might be causing us suffering.
Transcript
Finding a comfortable position on a cushion or a chair.
Turning back to your body and turning the attention towards the breath.
Notice that when a sensation arises,
It leaves.
Notice that when a thought enters your mind,
It disappears.
Notice that whatever it is,
What comes,
Goes.
When we return and stay connected to our life,
Stay connected to our breath,
Stay connected to our body,
We let things come and we let things go.
Nothing whatsoever that comes stays with us forever,
Our moods,
Our emotions,
Our energy,
Our sleepiness,
Our aches and pains.
None of these things,
Including our own thoughts and who we think we are,
Belong to us.
They seem to come from this or that,
The situation,
The moment or an event.
Then they pass away and something else comes and you let go of that.
As soon as we try to grasp something,
As soon as we try to make it permanent,
As soon as we try to possess it and problem solve,
Doing this or that with it,
There is a quality of dissatisfaction,
More painfulness.
Because as much as we'd like to,
We know we can't hold on to it.
As much as we desire to,
We know we can't possess it forever.
But when we are willing to let something arise,
No matter what it is,
No matter what emotion,
Or memory,
Action,
Or thought,
If we are able to completely face it with honesty,
With compassion,
With truthfulness,
And that we are able to let it go,
Not possessing anything,
There is a quality that arises within us,
A quality of ease,
A quality of flow,
A quality of repairability or workability to our experience and to our life,
Even if the thing that arises is not so pleasant,
Even if the thing that arises causes us pain and misfortune.
If we can stop,
We can be with it.
And when we can be with it,
If we are truly willing and present and willing to be humbled,
We can let things come,
No matter what they are,
And we can let things go.
We realize after practice for some time that we really don't possess anything at all.
We don't even possess our bodies.
We don't possess our thoughts,
Our feelings,
The people around us.
It's all changing day to day,
Hour to hour,
And moment to moment.
Everything is changing.
Something to possess always causes pain.
To grasp at something is to lose it and to feel the pain of its loss.
To hold on to something is to know its dismay and its end.
As soon as a moment arises,
It's passing on.
The breath comes and the breath goes.
The body ages.
People change.
Places change.
Time marches on.
It's not ours.
We don't own it.
The breath breathes us.
The body settles us.
And the mind runs wild if we don't stop.
And touch back in to this letting go,
To this coming and going.
We can so easily lose track of ourselves.
We can so easily wander off.
Losed bay by a thought or a memory.
Pulled out of awareness by a sensation or an ache or a pain.
When we lose track of ourselves,
We come back.
On the next breath,
We pay attention and return the awareness to the breath.
As we sit,
As we are,
Little by little,
We fall back into a relaxation.
Not a normal relaxation.
But we profoundly relax because we have let go.
Not just consciously but unconsciously.
We have let go because we feel the inherent benevolence in life coming and going with us.
Coming and going within us.
In the breath we find this generosity.
In the body we can find this generosity.
And in the mind we can find this generosity.
There is a kind of benevolence and freedom that is inherent in just allowing things to come and go,
To arise naturally and to pass away naturally,
Moment to moment.
When we let our awareness merge with and cooperate with our primordial essence and with the flow of just being.
It feels like we are opening up a hand of thought,
That we are opening up our heart at the chance of forgiveness and letting go.
That we are opening up and untying anything that we've been holding within us.
By letting it arise,
Being generous towards it and letting it go.
Letting the basic benevolence and generosity of the universe and of the spirit be free.
Not standing in the way of anything.
Not standing in our own way.
Not standing in the way of it,
Whatever it is that's coming up.
As we breathe in and breathe out,
We let go with openness and with ease.
Slowly coming back,
Returning to the moment.
Knowing that you'll be able to get up from this and go about your day.
Knowing that all it takes is letting go.

This was so incredibly helpful to me thank you. I used it as a before sleep meditation as I thought it might help me cope with missing someone. The way you explain it helped me finally understand / almost accept that nothing is really permanent in a better more helpful way for me. Thank you π π π
