Hello,

This is Mark Gladman,

Also known as Brother Frederick James.

Welcome to this special Lectio Divina contemplation audio on pathways to grace.

Grace is quite the mystery word.

Definitions abound.

Unmerited favour.

Mercy.

God's benevolence on the undeserving.

Which is all well and good,

But none really help us to experience grace.

And as I pondered this in contemplation recently,

Somehow the fruit of the Spirit emerged.

And as I pondered more,

Each virtue became a lens through which I began to see one can experience grace every single day.

So over this Lectio contemplation,

Rather than reflect on scripture itself,

We're going to reflect on some thoughts around the significance and meaning of each of the virtues of the fruit of the Spirit and how they can help us to open ourselves up to the experience of grace in our lives.

Not only are these virtues ideals to strive for,

But each one is also a pathway to grace.

As we go,

We will learn how they are interconnected and how in practice together can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

We will see how they can help us to connect to something greater and be open to the grace that is present in every moment.

So join me now as together we discover the transformative power of grace through the lens of love,

Joy,

Peace,

Patience,

Kindness,

Goodness,

Faithfulness,

Gentleness,

And self-control.

The fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians chapter 5 verses 22 to 23.

And I hope that this contemplation will inspire you to cultivate these virtues within yourself and to be open to the grace that comes with them.

And so we still ourselves,

Breathe in and out,

And find an initial place of stillness and peace.

And we pray,

May our hearts be open to see,

To understand how it is that we can experience grace through the virtues that we will contemplate today.

And as we do,

May they not only change us,

But may they work through us,

That we can extend those same virtues to others,

That they too may experience the beautiful grace of God.

Amen.

And so we begin with love.

What does grace look like through the lens of love?

The world often feels harsh and unforgiving.

This being the case,

Grace can feel like a rare and precious thing.

But as we open our hearts to the reality of love,

We begin to understand that grace is not something that is earned or given out sparingly,

But rather something that is inherent in the very fabric of the universe.

Love is the source of grace,

The wellspring from which all kindness,

Forgiveness,

And compassion flow.

It is the driving force behind every act of goodness and selflessness.

And when we choose to live in love,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace in our own lives.

Grace is not just a gift that is bestowed upon us,

But something that we have the power to give to others.

It is the ability to see the best in others,

To forgive their faults,

And to extend compassion even in the face of adversity.

And when we give grace,

We open ourselves up to the healing power of love.

As we allow ourselves to be guided by love,

May we open ourselves to the experience of grace in our own lives and in the lives of others.

Let us always seek to be bearers of grace,

To extend love and compassion to those around us,

And to understand that the more love we give,

The more grace we will receive.

May we always remember that love and grace are intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like through the lens of joy?

Amid life's struggles and hardships,

It's easy to lose sight of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us.

But as we open ourselves up to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that it is not only present in the darkest moments of our lives,

But also in the moments of pure joy and wonder.

Joy is the lens through which we can see grace,

A reflection of the love and goodness that exists in the world.

It's the reminder that even in the face of adversity,

There is still beauty and hope to be found.

And when we choose to focus on the joy in our lives,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to see and embrace.

It's the ability to find the good in every situation and to be grateful for the small moments of happiness that life has to offer.

And when we practice gratitude and choose to see the grace in everyday moments,

It fills our hearts with joy.

So may we see the grace that surrounds us,

To look for the joy that exists in every moment and be grateful for the small things that bring us happiness.

Let us choose to focus on joy and to be open to the grace that comes with it.

Joy and grace are not mutually exclusive,

But intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like?

Through the lens of peace,

Chaos and overwhelm have become so normal in our daily lives that it can be difficult to find peace.

But as we open ourselves up to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that peace is not just an elusive state of mind,

But something that can be found in the present moment.

Peace is the foundation on which grace can be built.

It is the quiet,

Inner stillness that allows us to see beyond the chaos and turmoil of the world.

And when we choose to cultivate peace within ourselves,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to cultivate within ourselves.

It is the ability to find inner calm and to be at peace with ourselves,

Our circumstances,

And the world around us.

And when we practice peace and choose to let go of what we cannot control,

We invite grace into our lives.

So may we experience inner peace,

Have the courage to let go of what we cannot control,

And learn to be at ease with ourselves and the world around us.

Let us choose to see the grace in each moment,

To practice peace and to be open to the grace that comes with it.

Peace and grace are intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like through the lens of patience?

Instant gratification and quick fixes have made it a challenge to practice patience.

But as we open ourselves up to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that patience is not just a virtue,

But a doorway to a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Patience is the conduit through which grace can flow.

It is the willingness to wait for the right moment and to trust in the unfolding of the journey.

And when we choose to cultivate patience within ourselves,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to invite into our lives.

It is the ability to wait for the right moment and to trust in the process of growth and change,

And to be at peace with the unknown.

And when we practice patience,

We give grace the space to reveal itself.

As we move through life's journey,

Let us strive to cultivate patience within ourselves,

To trust in the unfolding of our journey,

And to be at peace with the unknown.

Let us choose to see the grace in the present moment,

To practice patience,

And to be open to the unknown.

Let us choose to be at peace with the unknown.

Let us choose to see the grace in the present moment,

And to be open to the grace that comes with it.

Patience and grace are intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like through the lens of kindness?

Our world has placed so much value on self-interest and competition that it is easy to forget the importance of kindness.

But as we open ourselves up to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that kindness is not just a nice idea,

But a vital part of living a meaningful life.

Kindness is the language through which grace can be expressed.

It is the act of reaching out and connecting with others in a way that transcends self-interest.

And when we choose to practice kindness,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to offer to others.

It is the ability to extend compassion and understanding,

Even in the face of adversity,

And to act in the interest of others.

And when we practice kindness,

We become bearers of grace,

Making a positive impact in the world and inviting grace into our lives.

So may we seek to practice kindness,

To extend compassion and understanding to those around us,

And to make a positive impact in the world.

Let us choose to see the grace in others and to be open to the grace that comes with kindness.

Kindness and grace are intimately connected,

And one cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like through the lens through the lens of goodness?

It's so hard to go through a day when we don't have to experience negativity and cynicism,

So much so that it can be hard to see the good in others and in ourselves.

But as we open ourselves up to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that goodness is not just a fleeting feeling,

But a foundation upon which our lives are built.

Goodness is the light that shines through grace.

It is the qualities and actions that remind us of the best version of ourselves.

And when we choose to cultivate goodness within ourselves,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to invite into our lives.

It is the ability to recognize and act in alignment with what is right and true,

Even when it's hard.

And when we practice goodness,

We become bearers of grace,

Making a positive impact in the world and inviting grace into our lives.

So as we navigate life's journey,

May we cultivate goodness within ourselves to act in alignment with what is right and true,

And to make a positive impact in the world.

Let us choose to see the goodness in others and in ourselves,

And to be open to the grace that comes with that goodness.

Goodness and grace are intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like through the lens of faithfulness?

The world today is uncertain and unpredictable,

And it can be difficult to hold on to faith.

But as we open ourselves up to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that faithfulness is not just a virtue,

But a key that unlocks the door to a deeper understanding of the world and ourselves.

Faithfulness is the anchor that holds us steady in the midst of life's storms.

It is the steadfast belief in something greater than ourselves,

And the trust in its guidance.

And when we choose to cultivate faithfulness within ourselves,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to invite into our lives.

It is the ability to trust in something greater,

To have faith even in the face of uncertainty,

And to let go of control.

And when we practice faithfulness,

We give grace the space to reveal itself in unexpected ways.

May we have the courage then to cultivate faithfulness within ourselves,

To trust in something greater,

And to let go of the need to control.

May we choose to see the grace in the present moment,

To practice faithfulness,

And to be open to the grace that comes with it.

By being faithful to our beliefs and principles,

May we open ourselves to the transformative power of grace in our lives.

Faithfulness and grace are intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like through the lens of gentleness?

It can be hard to see the value of gentleness in a world that seems to value strength and aggression.

But as we open ourselves to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that gentleness is not a sign of weakness,

But a powerful force for good.

Gentleness is the softness through which grace can flow.

It is the act of approaching life and others with compassion,

Empathy,

And understanding.

And when we choose to cultivate gentleness within ourselves,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to invite into our lives.

It is the ability to approach life and others with compassion,

To understand and to be patient,

Even in difficult situations.

And when we practice gentleness,

We become bearers of grace,

Making a positive impact in the world and inviting others to be a part of that grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace.

We are the bearers of grace that comes with it.

Gentleness and grace are intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

What does grace look like through the lens of self-control?

The instant pleasure and immediate satisfaction of our modern world has made it difficult to practice self-control.

But as we open ourselves up to the experience of grace,

We begin to understand that self-control is not just about denying ourselves,

But about finding true freedom and fulfillment.

Self-control is the gateway through which grace can be accessed.

It is the practice of making choices that align with our values and beliefs,

Rather than succumbing to our immediate desires.

And when we choose to cultivate self-control within ourselves,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

Grace is not just something that is given to us,

But something that we can actively choose to invite into our lives.

It is the ability to exercise self-control and to make choices that align with our values,

Even in the face of temptation,

And to be at peace with ourselves and the world around us.

And when we practice self-control,

We give grace the space to reveal itself.

So may we cultivate with purpose the exercising of self-control within ourselves,

To make choices that align with our values,

And to be at peace with ourselves and the world around us.

Let us choose to see the grace in the present moment,

To practice self-control,

And to be open to the grace that comes with it.

By practicing self-control,

May we open ourselves to the transformative power of grace in our lives.

Self-control and grace are intimately connected.

One cannot exist without the other.

As we come to the end of this journey of exploring grace through the lens of the fruit of the Spirit,

We are filled with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the transformative power of grace in our lives.

We have come to see that grace is not just something that is bestowed upon us,

But something that we can actively choose to invite into our lives.

Love,

Joy,

Peace,

Patience,

Kindness,

Goodness,

Faithfulness,

Gentleness,

And self-control.

These are not only virtues to be admired,

But are also the pathways to grace,

To a deeper understanding of ourselves and to the world around us.

We've learned that by cultivating these virtues within ourselves,

We open ourselves up to the experience of grace.

As we move forward,

Let us strive to continue practicing these virtues and to be open to the grace that comes with them.

Let us choose to see the grace in each moment and to be bearers of grace,

Making a positive impact in the world.

Remember that grace is not a destination,

But a constant state of being.

And when we cultivate these virtues within ourselves,

Grace becomes a way of living.

And so as we rise from this time of contemplation,

We do so with hearts full of gratitude and thanksgiving.

We give thanks for the gift of the Spirit and the fruit that it bears in our lives.

May we continue to better understand and appreciate and experience the grace that God extends to us through the fruit of love,

Joy,

Peace,

Patience,

Kindness,

Goodness,

Faithfulness,

Gentleness,

And self-control.

May we remember where we have experienced grace in ways we never thought possible,

Through the love that has been shown to us,

The joy that has been brought to us,

The peace that has been given to us,

The patience that has been modelled to us,

The kindness that has been extended to us,

The goodness that has been imparted to us,

The faithfulness that has been demonstrated to us,

The gentleness that has been demonstrated to us,

And the self-control that has been taught to us.

May God continue to work in our hearts and minds,

Helping us to bear more and more fruit in keeping with the Divine Spirit.

May we be helped to love more deeply,

To experience greater joy,

To find peace in the midst of turmoil,

To be more patient and kind,

To live with integrity and faithfulness,

To be gentle with ourselves and others,

And to have greater control over our thoughts and actions.

May the fruit of your Spirit in us be the light in the world,

Bringing hope and healing to those around us.

Amen.

And my friend,

May love,

Joy,

Peace,

Patience,

Kindness,

Goodness,

Faithfulness,

Gentleness,

Self-control,

And as a result,

Grace be with you and remain with you this day and always.

May you go in peace,

Inspired to continue exploring the transformative power of grace in your life.

Amen.

Peace be with you,

My friend.
