Self-care and taking a pause are essential for caregivers because caregiving is both physically and emotionally demanding. This meditation offers a space to caregivers to take a pause, reflect and replenish themselves, supporting their own emotional wellbeing and understanding their own needs as well. This pause also helps the caregiver to cultivate sustainability, resilience, and compassion.

This meditation is rooted in lived experience.

I have witnessed first-hand the impact of caregiving on well-being within my own family.

While caregiving is seen as a noble act,

And it indeed is,

And caregivers are often honoured for their resilience and strength,

But the stress and grief it brings are rarely acknowledged.

Caregivers silently bear the loss of who their loved one once was,

While also grappling with the conflict and guilt between self-care and caring for another.

In these moments,

It's essential to pause,

Breathe and find balance,

To care not only for another,

But also for yourself.

This short meditation offers a space to acknowledge your emotions,

Release tension and reconnect with a sense of harmony.

We will now begin.

Take a moment to settle in.

Gently close your eyes,

If that's available to you,

Or maybe soften your gaze.

Allow your hands to rest comfortably on your lap.

Take a slow,

Deep breath in.

Hold for a moment and exhale gently.

Feel your feet anchored to the ground,

Your body supported by the chair or cushion or surface beneath you.

With each inhale,

Invite in a sense of steadiness,

And with each exhale,

Release any tension,

Allowing your shoulders to soften,

Maybe your hands to relax and jaws to unclench.

As you breathe,

Bring awareness to your role as a caregiver and the deep connection you share with the one you care for.

Acknowledge the love,

Dedication and strength that guide you.

At the same time,

Recognize your own needs.

Your well-being is just as important.

Find balance between giving and receiving,

Between caring for another and caring for ourselves.

As you breathe in,

Feel a sense of expansion of giving from a full heart.

And as you breathe out,

Allow yourself to receive,

To be replenished.

I invite you to repeat these phrases silently in your mind or aloud,

Whichever feels most natural to you.

Inhale deeply.

Breathe in.

I offer care with love.

I offer care with love.

Exhale slowly.

Breathe out.

I receive care with grace.

I receive care with grace.

Inhale gently.

Breathe in.

I hold space for another.

I hold space for another.

Exhale fully.

Breathe out.

I hold space for myself.

I hold space for myself.

We will now repeat the phrases once more.

Inhale deeply and breathe in.

I offer care with love.

I offer care with love.

Exhale slowly.

Breathe out.

I receive care with grace.

I receive care with grace.

Inhale gently and breathe in.

I hold space for another.

I hold space for another,

For the other person.

Exhale fully and breathe out.

I hold space for myself.

I hold space for myself.

Notice how each breath connects you to yourself and to those you care for.

Caregiving and self-care are not separate.

They are parts of the same flow.

When you nurture yourself,

You nurture your ability to care for others as well.

Now,

You may want to place one hand over your heart.

Feel the warmth of your own presence.

Take a moment to express gratitude for yourself,

For the person you care for,

And for this moment of balance.

And when you are ready,

Gently open your eyes,

If they are closed,

And carry this sense of harmony with you.

Proceed into your day,

Maybe.

By taking this small pause,

You are honoring both yourself and the one you care for.

Because true caregiving comes from a place of balance and compassion for both.

Look after yourself,

Take care,

And thank you for being.

Thank you Mohua for this meditation! I like especially the emphasis on taking care of oneself as a care giver!
