Why is this happening to me?
A refrain we might ask ourselves when life doesn't go our way.
This is a question that stems from resistance,
A struggle against our reality,
Rooted in the belief that our current circumstances are unjust or wrong.
Of course,
This resistance,
Which is characterized by a sense of denial and a refusal to accept what is,
Only leads to more mental and physical turmoil than we might already be experiencing.
It can manifest as heaviness,
Tightness,
Agitation,
Anger,
Depression.
When we resist,
We become caught in the belief that we know what's best for us.
We're clinging to our expectations and desires,
And we're assuming that they are serving our best interests.
But this perspective is narrow and limiting.
Ironically,
Surrendering to our circumstances can be a more peaceful and less strenuous path than resistance.
Surrender doesn't mean giving up or admitting defeat.
Rather,
It's an easing up,
A loosening of the grip we have on our expectations.
It's about opening up to possibilities,
Even if they deviate from our initial desires.
Resistance often comes from a place of thinking this shouldn't be happening,
A belief that we're victims of unfortunate circumstances or some cosmic vengeance.
But surrender shifts this perspective.
It encourages us to ask,
Why is this happening for me?
It's a question that allows us to consider that our current challenges might be part of a larger unfolding process that's not against us,
But potentially working with us.
The habitual thought of this shouldn't be happening doesn't aid in navigating or evolving through our situations.
Instead,
It just calcifies a sense of victimhood.
A more transformative approach is to ask ourselves,
Could there be reasons why this should be happening?
It's not about seeking a singular truth or convincing ourselves of something.
It's just an exercise in expanding our perspective,
Exploring various interpretations without getting attached to any.
The goal is just to interrupt our default pattern of interpretation that keeps us in a state of suffering.
Eckhart Tolle sums this up profoundly.
Always say yes to the present moment.
What could be more futile,
More insane,
Than to create inner resistance to what already is?
What could be more insane than to oppose life itself,
Which is now and always now?
Surrender to what is,
Say yes to life,
And see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.
The journey from resistance to surrender isn't about passive resignation.
It's an active acceptance.
It's a shift from a narrow focus on personal expectations to a broader,
More open perspective that embraces life's unfolding mysteries and challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation.
