With our focus on the end goal of falling asleep, we often fail to recognise the benefits of simply allowing ourselves to slow down, receive rest and re-engage our parasympathetic nervous system at the end of the day. This practice is your invitation to truly surrender into a state of non-doing, for in the words of poet Jane Pujji, there's ""no place to go, nothing to do [and] nobody to please"" during this sacred time of day.

Hello and welcome to the Soothing Sleep Series here on Insight Timer.

My name is Meg James and I'm so grateful to be here with you ending the day together.

As someone who's struggled with periods of insomnia over the years,

I know the pressure and expectations we tend to place on ourselves in regards to sleep.

Even if sleep is elusive,

Know that the simple process of allowing your body to settle down so that you can receive rest and relaxation is also incredibly beneficial too.

This practice will help you to do just that.

So when you're ready,

I'd like to invite you to find your way into a comfortable position,

Lying down.

Your legs extended long.

Your arms resting wherever feels natural and normal.

Allow your eyes to gently close.

Letting your awareness of the world around you start to settle down.

In your own time,

Taking three deep,

Nourishing breaths.

Inhaling slowly through your nose.

And gently sighing out through your mouth.

With each gentle sigh,

Allowing yourself to really start to let go.

Arriving here in this moment,

The end of your day.

Knowing that there's no place to go.

Nothing to do.

Nobody to please.

This is your time now to simply rest,

Relax and just be.

Knowing that all you have to do now is just allow yourself to sink into the comforting embrace of your bed.

Always letting this be new,

The experience as you go.

Just feeling into the slow steady rhythm of your breath.

And allowing yourself to receive rest and just be.

Your breath coming and going without any effort or control.

Your body moving softly with the gentleness of each breath.

Nowhere to go.

Nothing to do.

Nobody to please.

Just allow yourself to be here in this moment.

In the comfort of your bed.

Surrendering into the peace.

Quiet.

To rest.

This is your time now to simply rest,

Relax and just be.

Allow your whole body to be soft and relaxed.

Letting go of tension or tightness through your shoulders and your back.

Softening your face.

Your jaw.

Your neck.

Your body moving softly with the gentleness of each breath.

Your arms and your legs feeling heavy and relaxed.

Allowing yourself to surrender.

Into a state of deep rest.

Letting go of tension or tightness your entire Knowing that there's no place to go.

Nothing to do.

Nothing to do,

Just everything to wait for you to be able to be who you are and you Just allowing yourself to receive rest.

Just allowing yourself to receive rest.

And from time to time continuing to release through your body.

Letting yourself just be in this state of tiredness and non-doing.

Letting go of all effort.

And feeling your body sink even deeper into the embrace of the bed beneath you.

Allowing your body to receive rest.

Not needing to change anything.

And just being exactly as you are.

Feeling completely at peace.

Prepared for a deep,

Restorative sleep.

Continuing to listen quietly to the music for as long as you need.

Knowing that when you're ready,

You'll simply drift off to sleep.

Just letting yourself just be in this state of tiredness and non-doing.

Love this meditation so much. Your calm and gentle voice and the sound make me let go of everything and sink on to the ground. And the heaviness there on this ground feels so good - like being holded. 🙏

+ 1 x ⭐ Not wanting to create too much expectation in those who peruse ratings before opting in but for me there needs additional star to describe the genius of your uncomplicated approach to winding down human consciousness. So yeah... 6 stars! I think I've found my new favourite sleeper. Mucho gusto!
