Living With Cancer

With Anne van Leeuwen

Living with cancer - My experiences from teaching at a Cancer Support Community Center This course aims to create an awareness for the healing processes that a cancer survivor or a person dealing with cancer is going through. The journey post treatment is very individual and returning to 'normal live' and work can present some very confronting issues. I hope to create more love, understanding and empathy for this audience, to create more acceptance for them when they are ready to re-integrate into their families and their workplaces. This course is meant for cancer patients, survivors, care givers, family, friends and others who seek to develop an understanding of the anguish and emotional suffering cancer patients typically endure, and how to provide the required mental support. By sharing my experiences from working with cancer survivors and people who are facing cancer, I felt the need to speak up for this group and also help them process this usually very painful, intense and emotional process. This course aims to bring a broader recognition of the unique needs that cancer survivors have after completing treatment.

Meet your Teacher

Anne van Leeuwen is a Yoga and Meditation teacher. She teaches yoga and meditation, and creates her meditations and courses in the beautiful city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. She has been teaching yoga and meditation for more than a decade and hosts sharing circles for patients and survivors at a Cancer Support Community Center. Cancer Support Community Centers have been founded because the psychological healing processes usually start only after the physical recovery - that is once the medical interventions have been completed. In this course Anne not only shares the stories of her support groups, she also shares her spiritual views and support mechanism many people thus far have benefited from. Her strength is helping people who face cancer find meaning and purpose in life again.

Lesson 1

Lesson plan

In this lesson I briefly describe what each lesson is about, so that you have a clear overview of what you can expect from this course.

Lesson 2

Explanation of the cancer process

In this first lesson I explain why I felt the need to create this course and give some background on the need for Cancer Support Community centers. In the Netherlands there are many cancer support community centers. These centers have been founded because cancer survivors seldom have the right psychological support system after the medical interventions have completed. And I presume this is similar in many other countries.

In this lesson I elaborate a bit more on why people visit cancer support community centers. I give an overview in this module of what people usually share in my sharing circles. This varies from sharing their life story, the difficulties they face on how to get their lives back on track, the problem of dealing with extreme tiredness and their difficult relationship with their physical body.

This course showed up at the right time. As things usually do! I was diagnosed with cancer last year and lost my Dad at the same time. I have been grieving him and neglecting this other enormous life changing event. This course helped me realize I need to attend to my situation and a support group may be warranted too. Thank you so much for sharing this course!
