Slovakia Talk: Body Contemplation
Slovakian 4 day retreat - talk on body contemplation. Guided meditation in English, translated into Slovakian. Satipatthana Vipassana (Mahasi Sayadaw Style) and other techniques taught by the Buddha.
Transcript
Well,
We are doing this body contemplation or contemplation of sensations within the body,
Because most people,
I realize,
Especially in the West,
They are not really in contact with the body anymore.
They can't really feel themselves anymore.
I would like to ask you about your meditation about the body and its relationship with the body.
I would like to ask you about your thoughts about the relationship between the body and its relationship with the body.
It is individual different how you experienced it.
Some people see it,
When you say,
Concentrate on the top of your head,
They seem to see it.
Others seem to feel it and others just know it.
So,
There are fine differences.
I have a question about the relationship between the body and the body.
That is because there are different characters,
People have different tendencies.
So,
That is one thing we can see through that.
I would like to ask you about the relationship between the body and its relationship.
I have a lot of tendencies,
But I don't know how to describe them.
Knowing the body,
Feeling it,
Seeing it,
Whatever,
However it works for someone,
Is very important because the body is always in the present.
I would like to ask you about the relationship between the body and the relationship between the body and its relationship.
It will not go old if the body will be always in the present,
It will not go old.
That's right,
It doesn't grow old now in the present,
Because it's just there one moment,
But the next moment it's already older.
If you are in the present moment,
That's it,
But it doesn't say that there is not another present moment.
There is no way to stay in the present moment forever,
Because it changes every moment.
I think that there is a relationship between the body and the relationship between the body and the relationship between the body and the relationship.
So if we see,
Feel or know the body,
Usually we are here now in the present.
For us in our normal daily life it's the easiest way to come to the present,
Go to the body.
What is the body doing right now?
It's very important to know the body and the relationship between the body and the relationship between the body and the relationship.
If you try to know the mind,
Usually it doesn't work,
Because you are gone,
You are anywhere in the future,
Past.
It's not so easy for us to know the present moment in the mind.
If you try to know the mind,
You will be able to look at the present moment,
And you will be able to see the present moment in the mind,
And the present moment in the mind.
That is because the mind changes so fast,
So quickly,
You are not really able to catch up with it.
Because I see that the mind is very strong,
And my body is not as much an octopus,
Because it's not as strong.
And the body seems to be more stable,
So I can know I'm sitting.
It seems that I'm sitting here half an hour,
It's actually also changing,
But easier for me to use it as an anchor.
So it seems that you are stable,
Because you are in the same place,
And you are in the same place,
And you are not as strong as you are,
And that's how you feel.
But no need to have expectations what you should feel.
It's special to feel something sometimes.
We don't feel anything,
Some parts of the body,
It's no problem,
But we know there is no sensation,
That's all.
But I think that there is no need to have expectations,
Because it's not as strong as the body,
Because it's not as strong as the body,
And that's how you feel.
When we practice Vibhasana,
Usually you speak about four foundations of mindfulness.
And the first is the body.
So it's the first because it is easier for us to hold on to the body,
To see it in the present moment,
Or feel it in the present.
And it's probably possible,
Because it's not as strong as the body,
Because it's not as strong as the body.
We call it Gaya-nupasana,
Or Gaya is the body.
Vibhasana having the understanding of the body in the present moment.
It's not as strong as the body,
But it's not as strong as the body.
And if we are able to know the body,
To come to the present,
Of course we will also see all the other foundations.
They naturally will arise.
And if we are able to know the body,
We will see all the other foundations.
So we will see all the other foundations.
We will see all the other foundations.
Like you will quickly see feelings that arise,
Like pleasant,
Unpleasant or neutral feelings.
And we will see all the other foundations.
Like we will see all the other foundations.
That's called Vetha-nupasana,
The second foundation of mindfulness.
Vetha-nupasana is the first foundation of mindfulness.
And later,
Mostly we also see the Citta,
The mind,
That is called Citta-nupasana.
Aneskor vatina vidimaya citta ci jemisel,
Tat tendo kovitiv medita si sa potongola Citta-nupasana.
You see how the mind changes,
How it's reacting,
How it's thinking about body or the feelings that come.
Vitha ako sa tat amisela meni ako ryagu e ako mojno misli o cherle aan lambo ek i react siyag tare znikayu.
So you see it's getting wider,
We get more understanding about the present moment.
And the last one would be seeing the Dhamma,
So Dhammanupasana.
Ma zhivyid yek verzaga kuby rozra sta ku futom pritamu okami hu vidim estale vyats,
Kubyi kuby karaktiristik,
Pasakna zakadnyavshima voski Dhamma,
Ture o rino o Dhammanupasana.
And that is then really having the overview about everything that happens in the present moment.
So you know body,
You know mind,
You know the reactions.
And Dhamma always shows us that three characteristics are present.
So I think that you should take a look at meditation,
Because I think that it's important to know that pritamu okami hu is the name of the person who has the characteristics of pritamu okami hu.
And that is we see everything,
Be it body or mind,
Is always in the flow,
It's always changing.
And the characteristics are that there is a difference between the two,
And that you are completely different.
We see it's not really satisfying.
And the characteristics are that there is no one who is satisfied.
That's what we call dukkha,
Suffering.
And the third characteristic is that it is not completely under our control,
It's no-self as we say.
It's not that we are not satisfied,
But we are not satisfied with the characteristics that we have.
So that's actually everything,
That is all of what you call Buddhism,
All in that one thing.
And that's why I think that there is a difference between Buddhism and the characteristics of Buddhism.
So,
Just by watching the body.
Yes,
Just by watching the body.
But of course you can have this insight by everything else as well,
Watching the mind,
The citta or watching feelings or the dhamma.
But it's always coming to the same thing.
And we can see that this is the same thing as the dhamma,
That we are not satisfied with the characteristics that we have.
The understanding is always the same.
And it's always the same.
And it can be found in absolutely everything,
There is no exception.
So what we train here is just to know how to contemplate or how to see the present moment.
And if we do it well,
Then we can apply it in life,
In every moment in our life.
Here we are lucky because we have time.
So we have time just to focus on that.
No need to think about other things,
To worry about work or something else.
We are able to only focus on being present.
That is a very good exercise for life actually.
So we see it a bit clearer,
Like through magnifying glass.
And that changes something,
The mind is changing through this understanding.
It changes the habits that go to a wrong direction,
Like to understand things in a wrong way.
We would call that wrong view,
Wrong understanding.
That slowly will change to what we call in Buddhism the eightfold path.
And two parts of this eightfold path are right view and right understanding.
But no one can give you right understanding or right view.
Right understanding and right view only arise inside yourself.
True seeing things in a correct way.
So I could tell you this is the right view or this is right understanding.
And then you have what?
Right belief.
It's not understanding,
It's belief.
Okay,
I believe her because she wear this red robe or has no hair on her head or whatever.
But it's not yours,
Only if understanding comes from the heart,
From the realization you say.
Because you don't know what you are saying,
But you don't know what you are saying.
Long answer.
What is brownie?
Brownie?
You often speak about brownie.
I remember the word,
I like brownie.
That's right.
Not brownie.
No,
Not brownie,
It's brownie.
It started with S,
But it's a little bit like the language of this letter with almost no vowels.
Brownie,
You know the first three letters are S-P-R.
I like it.
It's clear,
No?
Yes.
Hope so.
Thanks for the question.
I think it's better to ask it.
Any other question now?
Brownie collage.
You're not talking about cookies.
Cakes and cookies.
What does meditation bring to you or what do you feel about that?
To me or to anyone?
To me,
Meditation.
Because I guess anyone just has a bit of a different way.
Well,
To me,
I don't know,
I don't meditate much.
Well,
I think for me mainly I do it to calm down,
To be peaceful and to have peace from everything.
But I don't do so much anymore from the same reasons that I have done it in the past.
I noticed that theaby meditation is like a private practice for everything that we do in mind.
So there are exercises that encourage meditation and meditation for many purposes that even if am receiving reprocess,
I had a lot of expectations in the past.
So I think I let go of a lot of these expectations.
I think I have a lot of expectations in the past.
It's a good thing that I have a lot of expectations in the past.
I think I have a lot of expectations in the past.
It's kind of a fuel for your machine to go on,
For your car or whatever.
It's a fuel for your car to go on.
It's a fuel for your car to go on.
If you want to go anywhere.
If you want to go anywhere.
If you want to go anywhere.
If you want to go anywhere.
Any other question?
You said something about elements during the walking meditation,
So I would like to ask what is the meaning of what elements you can feel?
I think that the element can be used to meditate more easily.
Did you check,
Did you feel it,
The difference between lifting your foot and placing your foot?
Yes,
There is a difference.
It's alright.
What is the difference?
Could you see which one is heavier,
Which one is lighter?
Placing is lighter.
I think that the most important thing is to keep your foot in the right place.
If you keep your foot in the right place,
You will feel the difference.
You don't feel the difference,
You feel the difference between the two.
Did someone else check?
Did someone else check?
Did someone else check?
I didn't feel the difference.
I was just thinking.
Basically it was more important,
Like,
Which one is more balanced,
With the right or with the left?
So it was like,
Okay,
When you place it,
It's like your weight is going down,
So for me it was more heavy,
But at the same time of course more stable.
But when you lift it,
It's like,
Okay,
Control your body and be straight,
So you don't feel.
But as you said,
It requires more concentration to be focused,
Because although it's probably a simple thing to do,
But also you need to be there.
I think that's the most important thing,
Because it's a very important thing to keep your foot in the right place,
Because it's a very important thing to keep your foot in the right place,
Because it's a very important thing to keep your foot in the right place.
How about you?
I didn't feel the difference.
I felt the difference between the left and the right.
The left side was more comfortable,
And the right side was more complicated for me,
But not the difference between the other side.
I think that in Brazil,
The most important thing is to keep your foot in the right place,
Because it's a very important thing to keep your foot in the right place.
How about you?
I have this thing that during lifting,
I simultaneously lift my foot and I have this thing that during lifting,
I have this thing that during lifting,
I simultaneously feel how the weight is being put on the other leg,
So I can't really distinguish between the two legs.
One is lifting,
The other one is stepping down,
Because the weight changes.
The other one doesn't release the weight,
But right in the same moment,
The other leg gets the weight on it.
I can't really put these two feelings aside.
Usually,
The wind element is lightness,
It's feeling light.
Wind element is always responsible for movement.
Every movement we do is in connection with wind element.
When you see someone moving,
It feels like lightness,
Or you see lightness.
So movement is lightness.
But if you place your leg and touch the ground,
It's hardness,
It's stability.
That is earth element,
Because earth element of the feet and earth element of the ground come together,
So it's more earth.
And that gives a completely different feeling.
It's this stability,
Hardness,
Sometimes might feel soft,
But that is also part of the earth.
So stepping is actually heavier and harder.
Whereas lifting is movement.
If you really feel it without thinking,
You will feel the lightness.
And it comes by practicing a longer time.
In a retreat or something,
You can feel,
Whenever you lift the feet,
Some people have really fenements,
And they feel like flying up or whatever.
It's really very strong to feel the wind element.
But I understand most of the answers,
Because we are capable to have a wide mindfulness.
So when you step or whatever,
When you lift,
You feel also like the weight on the other leg.
It's correct.
You feel this balance going on.
But if you focus only on one foot without thinking,
Then the experience would be like that.
But you can try it.
I think it's important to remember that the weight is more than the weight.
The weight is more than the weight of the body.
And that's why I think that the weight of the body is more than the weight of the body.
And the weight is more than the weight of the body.
And I think it's important to remember that the weight is more than the weight of the body.
And this is why I think that the weight is more than the weight of the body.
I think it's important to remember that weight is more than the weight of the body.
We don't have to keep the weight because weight is more than the weight of the body.
So,
It's very important to remember that weight is not the weight of the body.
I listen often to people through voice or through kinds of efforts but not always Caroline Sheel But sometimes we have to talk in this way I have another problem with my mind.
What is she saying is that she doesn't really know when she's working with the mind.
She can't really distinguish the heart of the meditation when the awareness is on the mind.
Well,
What we call ourselves is actually two things,
Body and mind.
But mind has four different abilities.
And that is feelings,
As I said before,
Pleasant,
Unpleasant,
Neutral feelings.
Then we have perception,
That is,
Kind of memory or this ability to put things in certain draws,
Like this is blue,
Red,
Whatever,
Man,
Woman.
Then we have mental formations,
That's thoughts,
Everything the mind forms.
And the fourth is consciousness.
Consciousness we have six kinds,
So the five sense stores and mind consciousness.
So whenever you know,
When you try to know your body,
Of course mind is also involved.
So there is mostly consciousness involved.
Feelings are always also involved.
And then perception comes and put it in a draw.
So actually all these are always involved whenever you know.
But it goes so fast that we cannot really catch up with it and maybe separate.
We are always too late.
So if something happens,
And there you realize it,
It's already far from the happening.
So when anything happens,
The first thing that usually always comes is a feeling,
Pleasant,
Unpleasant or no feeling,
That means neutral.
So if it's a pleasant feeling,
Liking comes up.
If it's an unpleasant feeling,
Disliking comes up.
And if it's a pleasant feeling,
It's always pleasant to be able to express yourself.
And from liking,
Wanting comes.
From disliking,
Not wanting is coming.
And from wanting,
Not wanting comes action,
Karma.
Karma is always a cause.
And every cause will have an effect.
And the cause,
Karma,
This action can be by speech,
You say something to get it.
And you do something to get it or to destroy it in the opposite.
And once you do or say something,
Of course there will be a result.
So that is what happens to us a thousand times every day,
Again and again.
It's in small things and in big things.
That's why we are here,
That's why we are born.
So this is what we call actually in Bali,
We call it paticca samupada,
The will of dependent origination.
Bali is a very small part of the Bali culture,
But it's not a single thing.
I mean,
I think it's a very small thing,
But it's not a single thing.
That's why there is birth,
There is old age,
Sickness and death.
Because there is a small part of the body,
The body is a small part of the body.
And so it just shows,
Usually you are not able to separate it,
Because it goes so fast.
But if you practice like we do now,
Try to be mindful.
You get more ability to know it quickly.
If mindfulness is really good and strong,
You could catch it after feeling arises.
And then let it go or cut it off and then there is no more karma you put on.
But it's not possible to catch it before feelings.
But it is possible to know it after.
And the more ability we have to do that,
Then the mind will change and will not follow that habit anymore.
A question aboutivening consciousness which is mates with innerness,
And how do we able to establish one's identity as a higher member?
Most of our reactions are habits.
So something arises,
We hear it,
See it,
Whatever,
And then feeling and then we go the same.
There is one way that is already a nice role to be rolled along.
And if someone develops mindfulness,
You can see how your mind is always acting like that,
Always re-acting like that,
And you see which of these reactions lead to suffering.
I would like to say that in light of the RL and how this trigger has developed,
We have obtained the idea of theaddecaive that you can go there as a reward.
And actually that is enough,
Just knowing it,
Seeing it,
Looking at it.
The only thing you should not do is look away or distract yourself.
Because if you look at it and it hurts,
And you look again and it hurts,
The mind will change.
Here we understand it faster,
But the mind needs longer,
It needs to see it again and again.
If I put my finger in the flame,
I hurt myself.
If you see that often,
The mind turns away by itself.
If you look at married So that's realization through experience.
That's why it's often said,
Mindfulness or this vipassana is the one way,
The looking at it,
Not looking away,
Look at it.
But I think that vipassana is the one way,
Because it's not the one way,
It's the one that's not the one that's the one.
Thank you.
Welcome.
What will happen if we just look away?
If you look away,
It will go on like that forever.
Until one day you don't look away.
That's it.
The way you look away is not a thing.
You have to look away,
So that there is no need for a lot of pressure to look away.
That's the usual habit.
That's what we usually do,
What all beings usually do.
We always say that we are the ones who look away,
And we are not looking away.
That's the usual habit.
Many help you,
Like TV,
Any kind of entertainments.
It's always nicer to watch a movie than look at yourself.
I think that it's better to watch a movie than look at yourself.
I think that it's better to watch a film than look at yourself.
Or get drunk.
Or get drunk.
Or stoned or whatever.
Or drunk.
Just not to see.
I think that's the usual habit.
That it is all because I'm afraid.
Because I don't want to do that.
Because I don't know what I will find out.
I think mostly it's ignorance,
Not knowing.
I think that if you don't know what you will find out,
You will not know.
That's why they say in this circle of dependent origination,
The root is always ignorance,
Not knowing.
That's why I think that if you don't know what you will find out,
You will not know.
Because you will not know.
But once you know about it,
Then you have no excuse.
Ignorance is not your excuse anymore.
I think that's why I think that it's not your excuse.
Because it's not your excuse.
So that is also one kind of problem that can arise if someone practices vipassana.
That is the problem that we have to deal with.
That then one day they say,
Oh,
I shouldn't have started now.
I cannot look away.
I think that's why I think that it's not your fault.
I think that it's not your fault.
It's not your fault.
And there is one point when you say,
Okay,
You cannot drop back into ignorance anymore.
You have to see it as a release if you want it or not.
So,
Delusion and not knowing is sometimes not so bad for many,
I think.
And they say,
If you have a certain level of mindfulness,
Some say there are levels of enlightenment,
First to fourth level of enlightenment.
And the meaning is,
If there is a certain level of mindfulness,
There is no way to step back anymore.
It's working and it will increase.
It's like you developed a new habit in your mind and once it runs,
You can't really stop it and it will go on.
In the beginning you need effort,
Right effort.
You can do a lot of it,
Try to come back,
Know it,
Look at it.
It's a bit like these motors they had a hundred years ago,
You had this thing to turn it on and it needs a lot of effort to get it run.
But when it's running then it's fine.
Okay.
Yeah,
So I would say you sit so long now,
Everyone is already in line.
No,
Not everyone but we stopped it now and you can go on with walking and we have some interviews to do.
Okay,
Good.
