This inspiring talk shares ideas from Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth," emphasizing the transformative view of the world as 'thou' rather than 'it.' Inspired by Native American cultures, this perspective teaches us to see the divine in everything, fostering reverence, gratitude, and happiness.

Hello there,

Welcome.

My name is Lew Redman.

Thank you so much for listening.

If you know my work or have heard me talk before,

You may have heard me talk about the hero's journey and Joseph Campbell and all that he did in his lifetime in understanding myths from religions and cultures around the world.

I highly recommend checking out Joseph Campbell's work if you haven't yet.

I recently re-watched one of his interview series with Bill Moyer called The Power of Myth.

It's one of my favorite programs and it's a great place to start with Joseph's work.

I actually watch this series probably once every year.

And in episode three,

Campbell offers the distinction he learned from his study of Native American cultures who saw the natural world as a thou rather than an it.

He says,

The ego who sees a thou is not the same ego that sees an it.

You can address anything as a thou and you can feel the change in your psychology as you do it.

Thou transports us to a state of reverence.

Reverence elicits gratitude.

Gratitude brings happiness.

If you want to be happier,

Bring more thou energy into your life.

Notice what happens when you feel the thouness of a tree or a bird.

See the next person you pass on the street as thou rather than them.

Practice cutting through the personality and see the divinity in each person,

Place,

And thing.

And so that is my invitation for you today.

If you were to even take a moment right now,

Look outside your window or something in the room that you're in and drop in to a deeper place within you.

Maybe that's your heart,

Maybe that's your core,

Maybe that's your belly.

And just notice bringing some thou energy to it,

Opening up spaciousness as you relate to this thing in a different way.

Notice what that stirs.

Maybe there's some more appreciative energy.

Maybe there's some humility in standing under something,

To understand something at its core essence,

To see the spirit in all things.

And this is one of the many beauties of indigenous cultures is that everything is emanating spirit.

Everything can be seen in relation as a thou.

And so I invite you to take this with you today and see where you can bring more thou energy and maybe,

Just maybe you find it does lead to a bit more happiness and contentment.

Thank you for listening.

If you want to explore deeper on the concept of happiness and fulfillment,

I have a course called Your Daily Guide to Happiness and Fulfillment and it will walk through a whole lot of different practices and explorations like the one we did today and do some meditations on cultivating your garden of happiness and fulfillment.

I think you will enjoy it.

So go check that out and I look forward to connecting with you again soon.

Lots of love.

Take care.

Bringing "Thou energy"...I love this invitation, thank you! I'm sitting on the porch watching birds visit the bird feeder and I can sense the quiet reference that arises when I see birds as "Thou". 🙏🏼
