Insights can be deeply transformative. Over the past few years, Liz has discovered that they arise more naturally when she tunes into her Inner Compass — a quiet, guiding sense within. This understanding deepened when she encountered The Three Principles, a simple yet profound framework for how our minds really work. If you're curious to explore this further, take a look at Liz's course: “The Three Principles: An Introduction.”

Hello and welcome to five minutes in nature with me Liz Scott and once again you join me up on Dartmoor.

It's so green at the moment,

The bracken and ferns are thick on the hillsides and they are this deep green and so you've got the grass which is green,

You've got the bracken and ferns which is green,

You've got the darker clumps of gorse bushes,

They're like thorn bushes,

They're dark green,

The hawthorn tree is also green,

Everything is so green and you've got these little white pockets of sheep.

You can see the sheep on the moorland contrasting against this greenness and today my five minutes in nature reflection is all about insights.

It's the difference between insights,

Seeing something from within,

Having a sight from within and trying to work things out with your intellect.

Insights are really powerful things and when I came across the inside out understanding,

Also known as the three principles,

And there is a course on insight timer I've created about the three principles giving you an introduction if you're interested,

But when I came across this understanding,

The inside out understanding,

The three principles,

I began to realise the power of looking within.

This is where I started to see the power of my inner compass,

That deeper intuitive wisdom and as I brought my attention within,

So rather than getting lost in the stories and the tangled web of my thinking,

I brought my attention within to this deeper space of wisdom within me,

This place of well-being,

Of calm and peace of mind.

As I brought my attention to that space,

I just found that I experienced insights.

Sometimes these insights would turn up just as a lack of worry,

Where in situations in the past I'd worry,

Like when we used to go out cycling on our push bikes,

I'd often worry if we were going to go on a push bike holiday,

I'd spend weeks worrying that something untoward was going to happen and lo and behold when I came across the inside out understanding,

Totally unexpectedly,

And I wasn't even trying to get rid of this anxiety or worry,

I noticed that when we went on push bike holidays,

I didn't worry in the same way,

It just it was like the worry had gone.

So that's an illustration of an insight and we've got some friends that we've just seen recently and they've always been probably a little bit overweight,

They enjoy their food,

They enjoy their drink,

Lovely friends and for years and years and years and years they've talked about the need to lose weight,

The need to eat less and drink less and although they talk about it they've not really done anything about it and then today we met up with them and suddenly they're looking really fit and well,

We haven't seen them for a few months so it's very noticeable,

They've lost weight,

They've started moderating what they're eating and they're not doing it in a heavy-handed way,

They've had an insight,

They've actually had some health issues which has precipitated the insight but they've seen things differently,

That's what an insight is,

Is that they've always known that the way to lose weight was to exercise more and to eat less but with an insight you see it from within,

It's an experiential understanding,

You deeply understand something that you didn't see before.

So today is just a recommendation that insights are infinitely more helpful than analysing and reasoning and coming up with techniques and tools to try and sort things out in your life.

An insight does the heavy lifting for you and you can't make an insight happen but you can create the place where they're most likely to occur.

It's a little bit like if you want to go looking for wildlife,

If you want to go and watch for example badgers come and play at night then your best bet is to go and wait near a badger set and be very quiet and still until it's evening time and you might see them emerge.

Like I can point out the best way to go and look for an insight but ultimately like the badgers they might not come out their set that evening and ultimately an insight might not arise but the best way to come across an insight,

The best way I've found is to look within,

To find that settled space within and as my busy mind settles down I'm just more able to hear and feel and intuit that wisdom within,

That deeper wisdom.

So my request to you today is look within,

Look within to that settled space and see what insights emerge for you.
