When you truly understand that, at your core, you are deeply okay, navigating life becomes easier. In today’s '5 Minutes In Nature', Liz shares that recognizing your essence as resilience and well-being doesn’t mean you’ll always feel happy. In fact, it's both nourishing and healthy to experience sadness and love simultaneously—much like a spring day where sunshine and hail exist side by side.

Hello and welcome to five minutes in nature with me Liz Scott and you find me out and about on quite a blustery day with lots of showers and racing clouds and suddenly it's sunny and suddenly it's raining or it's hailing and it's an extraordinary day really because just a minute ago I was walking and the sun was shining and it was raining at the same time and I turned around and saw a rainbow behind me and I love this sort of weather because it's a real reminder that spring is on its way and also it reminds me of something that I feel quite strongly about and share with people.

One of the things I find is so helpful to understand it's it's one of the things that really changed the way that I engage with life is to realize that at the core and essence of my being I am deeply okay.

I am well.

I have well-being.

I have resilience.

I am made of well-being.

Now I don't believe that.

I know it.

I feel it.

I have that as an experience.

So I know that I am okay and there is sometimes a bit of misunderstanding about this sense of well-being or this sense of resilience or okayness because there is a sense that some people feel that to be okay or to know that their essence is made up of resilience and well-being that if that is the case they should be happy all of the time and that's not what I mean.

I don't mean that because you realize your resilience and well-being that you experience happiness all the time.

What I mean is that you experience weather all the time different types of weather but deeply you know that whatever the weather of your emotions you're okay and it is a little bit like walking through a hail shower when the sun is shining is that there is this brightness and this sun sunniness of okayness and yet there is a hail shower at the same time.

Both can be true.

For me when I look at my lovely beautiful old dog who is very much on his last legs now he still loves life but he's slow and he's loves his food and he loves people and he loves sleeping but he's getting very old and weary with life.

I can look at him and feel this intense sadness knowing there he is just shaking he's shaking off the hail.

I can feel this intense sadness that I know that his time to pass on is soon and at the same time I can feel this incredible love.

Both can be true at the same time and it feels healthy to feel like this to feel sadness and to feel the depth of love at the same time.

I remember once we were running a course and we were explaining to people who hadn't really come across this idea before this sense of them getting back in touch with that resilience and well-being and core and essence of who they truly are and I remember on one of these training days we were explaining this and then the next time one of the participants came up to me and said look you talked to us about this on the previous training day and she said I don't understand because I went to visit an elderly relative in hospital my aunt who's very poorly and I sat beside her bed and I felt really sad I felt really sad and if I'm feeling resilient and well-being and resourceful then surely I shouldn't feel sadness and that's not what I mean when I talk about having the essence of resilience and wellness and well-being at your core what I mean is that that is always present and you will feel a raft of different emotions and it's perfectly natural and it's perfectly human to do that and to feel that so you can feel sadness you can feel frustration you can feel anger you can feel fear and at the same time you can feel deeply connected to something that is connecting you to the web of life that is the energy of life itself you can feel both things at the same time but when you deeply know that you're okay the actual fear and insecurity of being a human being well that shifts because you know that whatever happens and whatever your emotions that you can look within and feel and connect with that deeper essence of who you are and whatever happens you can take the next step in life
