While many people feel drawn to learn more about the brain and neuroscience, Liz believes the real magic lies elsewhere. In today’s 5 Minutes In Nature, she explores the life-force energy that animates us—an energy that illuminates the brain but isn’t produced by it. Liz recognises intuition as a gentle nudge from this deeper source, and it’s this energy that she chooses to focus her attention on.

Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott.

I've just this second come in from a walk.

It is a storm outside,

Wild winds,

Rain and I am sopping wet.

I've just taken off all my dripping rain jackets and waterproof leggings and my Wellington boots.

I've hung them up to dry in the house and I've come back outside to the garage.

I just was unable to do any recordings outside today but it feels semi outside.

I've got the garage door open,

You might hear the rain dripping on our patio and the wind blowing as well and today's reflection comes from something I did last night.

I gave a little talk about my pilgrimage and what seems to be happening is that I'm very inspired to give small talks and if you remember I walked 630 miles.

This was back in March and April this year following the energy lines,

The Michael and Mary energy lines and it was seven weeks of deep reflection for me and very poignant time on many levels and since I've been back,

The pilgrimage still speaks to me and I feel like it's encouraging me to write up the notes I made whilst I was away into a book and also it wants to come through me in giving talks.

That's how I'm experiencing it at the moment and bearing in mind the emphasis for me on wisdom and intuition,

Listening to that intuition.

It was the intuition that led me on the pilgrimage,

It was the intuition that led me each and every day and that settling of my busy mind into that deep energy and spirit of life,

That life energy,

The spirit of energy and energy,

Universal energy,

Something that's intangible and yet I deeply felt as I was walking but also I feel each and every day.

And as I was talking,

It was family,

Friends,

A few neighbours,

It was only a small group,

Maybe 10-12 people in total,

Squashed into our little living room around a log burner.

There was one lady who is really interested in neuroscience and as I paused the conversation and asked for questions,

Bearing in mind I was talking about being guided by this energy,

This spirit,

This intuition,

This inexplicable sense of connection with the land.

So that was the context of my conversation.

So she was interested in neuroscience and she made the comment,

Oh I could tell you what's happening in the brain but I guess you don't want to leave the magic.

And I was like,

No I don't want to leave the magic and I really don't want to know what's going on in the brain.

Now that was a,

Sometimes I get these real visceral senses of like,

No that is not what I want to do,

That is not what I want to hear.

And I had one of those moments and looking back I kind of know why,

Well I think I know why.

It's because the brain is,

It's a really interesting thing to study and I'm really glad people are interested in studying it.

But the thing that I'm pointing to is beyond the brain.

It is an energy that lights up the brain and the brain is enlivened by,

But it is not the brain creating the energy.

So for me to get interested in the brain or neuroscience is one step beyond what I'm interested in.

And I guess a metaphor might be,

For example,

Looking at a computer and getting interested in which bits of the circuit board light up at different times.

I mean that's a real valid interest to have.

But my interest isn't in the computer,

It's in the electricity.

The electricity that runs the computer,

The electricity that runs my kettle,

The electricity that runs a hairdryer,

The electricity that has surgeons do operations,

The electricity that has a loudspeaker come alive and music can be heard.

It's,

I'm interested in the electricity.

I'm not interested in what happens with the electricity and that's how I see neuroscience.

So for me it was really helpful just to realize that yes we we don't have language for this energy behind life.

It's not something we can neatly put into a box and we can't study it because it's it's invisible,

It's formless.

And yet for me as I look within and get settled and feel that sense of knowing and depth of who I truly am,

I know that that energy is me.

It's coming through me and that is where I want to place my attention.

Place my attention on that mystery of that energy that I feel that is at my essence and yet I can never pin down or explain.

So for me this is all about exploring that which can't be explained but is in each and every one of us and it is the energy that fires up and enlivens and is the intelligence behind the whole of life.

That is where I want to put my attention.
