A guided meditation with journal writing prompts for setting a New Year Intention. Great for the start of a new year, but really, you can choose any time of the year to set your intention. By setting an intention, you bring focus and clarity to the ways in which you most want to show up in the world. An intention reflects your deepest values; who you most want to be. Today on Live Boldly,

New Year intention setting.

Welcome friend,

I'm Kelly and I've created for you an intention setting guided meditation followed by some journal prompts.

Before you begin,

You may want to have a journal and a pen nearby.

Find a comfortable seated position and gently close your eyes.

Relax your shoulders.

Soften the muscles around your eyes.

Relax your jaw.

Bring your awareness to your breath.

Take three deep,

Cleansing breaths to release any tension in your body and unhook from any mental distractions.

Take a deep inhale through your nose and sigh it out through your mouth.

Inhale and exhale release.

One more time just like that.

Inhale deeply and on your exhale let it go.

Setting an intention in the new year helps bring focus and clarity to the ways in which you want to show up in the world.

An intention reflects your deepest values,

Who you most want to be.

Every day is an opportunity to grow and become the person you long to be.

Perhaps you're listening to this recording at the end of the calendar year or the very start of a new one.

But really,

At any time in the year,

You can choose to set your intention.

Staying with your breath,

I want you to mindfully shift your awareness from your head and all its thinking activity down to the stillness and wisdom of your heart.

So just imagine with every exhale,

Your awareness travels down from your head toward your heart.

Without this meditation,

You may notice you've moved back to your head and the mental chatter of your mind.

That's okay.

Just notice without any judgment.

And then using your breath,

Redirect your attention back to the heart space of your body.

You may find you need to do this several times,

And that's okay.

We come to the heart because that's where I want you to listen for answers.

Trust that the heart always knows.

We'll begin first with some reflection.

If you have a journal and pen nearby,

Gently open your eyes and prepare to write.

You may wish to pause this recording after I pose the questions to give yourself time to write.

And if you don't have a journal and pen,

That's okay too.

Just stay with your eyes closed and record your answers in your heart.

Let's begin.

Inhale and exhale.

The first question I want you to ask your heart is how am I different today than from one year ago?

How am I different today than from one year ago?

Ask your heart what am I most grateful for from this past year?

What am I most grateful for from this past year?

Ask your heart if I could change one thing about this past year,

What would it be and why?

If I could change one thing about this past year,

What would it be and why?

Say thank you to all the lessons you experienced in this past year,

Even the hard ones.

They were not happening to you,

They were happening for you.

They've helped shape who you are today.

As you look forward to this new year ahead,

Notice the blank space like pages of a book that have yet to be written on.

And bring some awareness to what arises for you at this notion of a blank canvas.

Does it excite you with possibility?

Do you feel a sense of fear over the uncertainty and not knowing?

Just simply notice,

Give space to whatever feeling or thought is present.

Breathe.

I want you to see yourself as the author of that book that has not yet been written.

And if you find that you've shifted back up into the mind and the thinking brain,

I want you to take some breaths and drop down to the heart space again.

And as we take our gaze to look ahead in our mind,

I want you to ask your heart this question.

What longs to be written on these pages?

As the author of the book that has not yet been written,

What longs to be written on those pages?

Next I want you to ask your heart,

What is calling me?

The calling may not have exact words.

It could be a feeling.

Let the feeling be your answer.

Ask what is calling me?

Now I want you to imagine traveling through time to one year in the future.

See yourself happy and celebrating the wonderful year it's been.

Bring that image to mind.

And from this future place,

I want you to ask your heart,

Why am I so happy?

What has changed?

How am I different?

Why am I so happy?

What has changed?

And how am I different?

You're almost done.

You're doing great.

Thank your heart for sharing its wisdom with you.

Now you're ready to set your intention.

An intention is one word or phrase.

You know you've got the right word or phrase when it resonates with your heart.

You feel drawn to it.

Your intention reflects who you want to be one year from now.

Perhaps your intention is joy or love or forgiveness.

It may be confidence or courage,

Inner peace or compassion.

You choose the word or words that most resonate for you.

Once you have your intention,

Take that word or words and using your imagination,

Store your intention into a seed and then plant it in the fertile soil of your heart.

In the days,

Weeks and months ahead,

Come back to your intention and remember.

And every time you do this,

Know that you are giving water and light,

Helping that seed to grow.

One of the best meditations to reset for the new year. My only wish for you is to record some sort of closing …a way to shift gears at the end.
