The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day,
He sent them into his vineyard.
And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace and said to them,
You also go into the vineyard and whatever is right I will give you.
So they went.
Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour and did likewise.
And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle and said to them,
Why have you been standing here idle all day?
They said to him,
Because no one hired us.
He said to them,
You also can go into the vineyard and whatever is right you will receive.
So when evening had come,
The owner of the vineyard called to his steward.
Call the laborers and give them their wages beginning with the last to the first.
And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour,
They each received a denarius.
And when the first came,
They supposed that they would receive more.
And they likewise received each a denarius.
And when they had received it,
They complained against the landowner saying,
These last men have worked only one hour and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.
But he answered one of them and said,
Friend,
I am doing you no wrong.
Did you not agree with me for the denarius?
Take what is yours and go your way.
I wish to give to this last man the same as to you.
Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things?
Or is your evil eye because I am good?
So the last will be first and the first last.
For many are called but few chosen.
And that's the parable of the laborers in the vineyard.
When I first read this parable a long time ago,
I couldn't get the point.
I mean,
Someone has been working since the beginning of the day and you're paying them one denarii and then someone has been working for just one hour and then they are paid the same.
Why?
And I could not get the,
I could not understand the logic of it.
I could not understand the reasoning behind it.
But we'll go now into the interpretation line by line.
Let's see what meaning comes out.
For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
And it starts with the kingdom of heaven.
What is the kingdom of heaven?
You can think of the kingdom of heaven as as a state.
A state of grace,
A state of love,
A state of unity that could be the kingdom of heaven.
The landowner could symbolize the divine who is constantly calling us to contribute to the unfolding of love and purpose in the world.
And the sentence is kind of a reminder to us that every morning we have this invitation to do to do sacred work,
To do work that is meaningful to us,
To do work that aligns with the purpose of our life and also aligns with a higher purpose.
So what work you go out to do,
Your actions,
Your words,
Your thoughts should align with the purpose that you have in your life.
It's a good idea to begin each day with an intention.
How can I be of service today?
What actions can I do today which will take me closer to the person that I want to become?
What actions can I take today that will help me live my life to the fullest of my potential?
And then going out about the day doing this,
Knowing that whatever you are doing contributes to something larger.
Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a dinar a day,
He sent them into his vineyard.
And the dinaris represents the fulfillment of your needs,
Your soul's needs,
Peace,
Purpose,
Abundance,
Love,
Serenity,
Your soul's needs.
So when you commit to living in alignment with your principles,
You will automatically get whatever you need to thrive.
And the vineyard is simply your life's field of opportunities.
The vineyard is your life,
Your relationships,
The work that you do,
The courses that you're pursuing,
Your community,
Your spiritual work,
Your leisure.
All this can be your vineyard.
Try to see every moment whether it's joyful or it is challenging,
As part of the vineyard you are here to tend.
And the question here is what will you cultivate today?
And the call would be to cultivate gratitude,
To cultivate patience,
To cultivate courage,
Instead of going about complaining,
Instead of living in fear and not doing the things that you want to do.
And when he went about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
And there are always these moments in our life where we do nothing or we are given to doing work that does not fulfill us,
Being idle,
Being unproductive.
We know that we have these important things that we need to do during the day,
But sometimes we choose to spend our time watching something on television or scrolling on social media.
Sometimes we will stand in the marketplace of life not pursuing a direction and sometimes we are just standing and waiting for a direction because we can also be unsure of our purpose.
The call is to always be on the lookout for opportunities because opportunities come.
Opportunities are always there all around us.
Sometimes these opportunities may present themselves in subtle forms like a chance to help or the chance to listen or the chance to learn and sometimes these opportunities may be more obviously in your face.
Keep yourself open to what opportunities come your way.
And he said to them,
You also go into the vineyard and whatever is right I will give you.
So they went.
A way to look at this is that life does not demand perfection or certainty from you.
At any point life is giving you the opportunity to act.
Life is inviting you to act.
To act simply that once you start acting whatever you need will be provided.
And in a way there's an element of faith involved here because faith is not knowing the entire plan for your life but still doing what you need to do anyway.
And essentially this is how the universe works right because wherever you give your focus to life somehow tends to provide whatever you need.
If you're focusing on fear you can be guaranteed that life will present you more opportunities to be fearful.
If you're focusing on abundance you can be sure that life will give you more opportunities to be abundance.
Whatever you focus on will expand.
Again he went out about the 6th and the 9th hour and did likewise.
Throughout the day,
Throughout the day we have an opportunity.
Every moment is an opportunity.
Sometimes when we sometimes we start our day and then something happens to put us in a bad mood.
And essentially what happens after that once we are in that bad mood that bad mood tends to stay with us throughout the day.
And it stays with us throughout the day simply because we let it stay with us throughout the day.
What we need to remember is that life is neutral.
Life simply is.
Life simply happens.
And every moment of every day whether it's the third hour whether it's the sixth hour or whether it's the ninth hour we have this opportunity to reset ourselves to reset our day.
We can do this simply by centering ourselves taking a few deep breaths letting go of whatever negative things happened in the earlier part of the day and choosing to start the day fresh.
And about the 11th hour he went out and found others standing idle and said to them why have you been standing here idle all day?
The question is very gentle here.
Why have you been standing idle here all day?
Why are you hesitating?
Why are you holding back?
Sometimes often fear self-doubt unworthiness this can tend to keep us idle.
And as I mentioned earlier the call is always there.
In the vineyard of life there's always a place for you no matter how long you waited or no matter how long you stayed idle the call is always there.
So whenever fear whenever doubt paralyzes you hear this question as an invitation why have you been standing here idle all day?
And then you can ask yourself what small step can I take today to break free from stagnation.
And they said to him because no one hired us he said to them you also go into the vineyard and whatever is right you will receive.
Sometimes we tend to feel overlooked or we tend to feel unseen we believe that our contributions don't matter.
But what the sentence is trying to convey is that everyone matters all of us have been chosen all our lives have meaning and whatever effort we put in the effort will be rewarded.
And it doesn't matter about others recognizing your effort it's about you doing what you can you putting in the effort you recognizing your own worth.
And it's what you can choose to do every day is affirm your own value.
You can say to yourself I am needed my presence here has purpose.
And then step into whatever opportunities are presented to you simply knowing that whatever effort you put the universe will honor that effort.
So when evening had come the owner of the vineyard said to his steward call the laborers and give them their wages beginning with the first to the last.
The evening can symbolize the end of life or it can symbolize a phase of completion.
For me the month of December is like that evening where I start to take stock of what have I done during the year.
Because at the beginning of the year I set targets for myself I set goals for myself and by the end of the year by December I start taking stock.
So in that evening it's like a phase of completion.
And sometimes it's not about how long or how hard we have worked but sometimes it's the sincerity of our hearts it's about the quality of the effort that we have put in.
Because grace is not earned.
Grace is given freely.
And what we can understand from this sentence is to let go of striving for more or comparing our journey to others and trusting that we are enough.
And when those came who were hired about the 11th hour they each received a denaris.
And this shows the radical generosity of divine grace.
Grace is not measured by human standards of fairness.
The universe does not operate in the same way as our human mind thinks.
Abundance is available to all.
The abundance around you is available to everyone.
Even if even if we come late to understanding even if we come late to understanding love to understanding healing to understanding how the universe works once we understand the full reward is ours.
So we can say it's about practicing radical self-compassion.
Even if we feel late to forgiveness late to growth or late to a new path it's never too late to begin again.
Because one thing that's guaranteed about life is that there are always second chances.
As long as we try there's always a second chance.
But when the first came they supposed that they would receive more and they likewise received each a denaris.
And this is how the ego operates.
This is how the human mind operates.
The human mind believes that greater effort should be given greater rewards.
But our ego is often humbled by spiritual truth.
All that the sentence says is that all of us are equally loved of and valued.
The generosity of the divine the generosity of the universe is not a competition.
The call here is to release envy release resentment and celebrate life's blessings as a reflection of the abundant nature of life.
There is enough for everyone.
And when they had received it they complained against the landowner.
And this complaining arises when we compare.
When we compare we lose sight of how we are individually blessed.
We have been brought up in this conditioning of comparing.
What is the antidote to comparison is simply gratitude.
Cultivating gratitude.
Reflecting on what we already have.
Reflecting on what we have received.
Friend,
I'm doing you no wrong.
Did you not agree with me for the denaris?
And this reminds us that we have been given exactly what we need.
And what feels like less is often a result of our limited perspective.
So when when we are tempted to feel slighted we can pause and reflect.
What blessings have I agreed to but I have overlooked?
Simply shift towards gratitude.
Take what is yours and go your way.
I wish to give to this last man the same as you.
The will of the divine is rooted in generosity and equality.
So it's about losing our attachment to how others are treated,
To how others are devoured.
And understanding that our own journey is unique.
Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things or is it your evil eye because I am good?
And the evil eye,
Jealousy,
Bitterness,
Envy,
Pride.
When we are able to let go of this evil eye,
We see that the goodness of others,
The blessings that others receive does not diminish us.
We recognize that life is abundant.
So the last will be first and the first last for many are called but few chosen.
And this closing reminds us that the divine,
The universe,
Life does not measure your worth by your status or by your timing but by how open your heart is.
How well you choose to respond with grace.
So try to seek humility,
Try to seek openness.
Know that every moment that we have is an opportunity to say yes to divine love,
To say yes to opportunities,
To say yes to living life in principles that serve the greater good.
So what this parable teaches us is simply release comparison,
Trust the timing of our lives,
Embrace grace.
It's never too late and to live each day,
In fact live each moment of every day with the opportunity to work in the vineyard of your life.
Knowing that you are seen,
You are loved,
You are valued beyond measure.
Abundance is always there for all of us.
We'll now go into a guided reflective meditation which is inspired by the parable of the workers in the vineyard.
If you are sitting,
Feel the chair,
The surface that you are sitting on support you.
If you are sleeping,
Feel the feel the earth,
Feel the ground,
Feel the surface beneath you supporting you,
The earth cradling you.
If it is safe to do so,
You can close your eyes.
If you are not comfortable with closing your eyes,
You can simply lower your gaze and look at the floor or on a lower surface.
Take a deep breath in,
Hold it for a bit and slowly exhale.
Take another deep breath in,
Hold it for a bit and exhale again and do this one more time.
Imagine yourself standing at the edge of a beautiful vineyard.
The morning sun is rising,
Casting a golden light over the rows of lush vines heavy with ripe grapes.
The air is fragrant with the scent of earth,
Fruit and blossoms.
You feel the presence of the landowner,
Warm,
Loving,
Kind.
This presence represents the divine,
The source of all abundance,
Inviting you to participate in the work of creation.
You feel no pressure,
Only a gentle call to step forward into this sacred space.
As you take your first steps into the vineyard,
Notice the sensations,
The soft crunch of the soil beneath your feet.
The gentle warmth of the sun on your skin and the peaceful rustling of leaves in the breeze.
Feel a sense of purpose and belonging.
In this vineyard,
There is no competition or urgency.
There is only the joy of contribution.
Imagine yourself working steadily,
Tending to the vines.
Perhaps you are harvesting grapes,
Tying up branches or simply admiring the beauty all around you.
As you work,
Reflect on the efforts you've made in your life.
Consider the dreams you've pursued,
The love you've shared,
The challenges you've overcome.
Ask yourself,
How have I tended to the vineyard of my life?
What are the fruits of my labour and how have they nourished me or others?
Breathe deeply as you acknowledge your efforts with gratitude.
Letting go of any self-judgment.
Now imagine the day progressing and more workers are invited into the vineyard.
Some arrive at midday while others come in the late afternoon.
Each is welcomed with the same warmth you experienced and each finds a role in the work.
You notice how the landowner treats everyone equally with love,
Generosity and trust.
Reflect on the workers who came later.
Have you ever felt you arrived late to an opportunity?
Have you ever judged yourself for starting something after others?
Or have you compared your efforts to others,
Feeling resentment or competition?
Release those thoughts now.
Take a deep breath and let them dissolve like mist in the morning sun.
Trust that you are always where you need to be and that divine timing is perfect.
As the day ends,
Imagine the landowner gathering all the workers together.
You see the landowner handing each person a dinaris,
A shining coin symbolizing abundance,
Fulfillment and divine grace.
The workers who began in the morning received the same reward as those who arrive later.
Hold your coin in your hands and reflect.
This coin represents the infinite abundance of life.
It is not earned by effort alone but given freely because you are worthy.
This coin is a reminder that the universe operates on love,
Not comparison.
You are always enough and your timing is always perfect.
Feel the weight of the coin in your palm and allow it to symbolize the fulfillment of your deepest desires.
Whisper to yourself,
I am worthy.
I am abundant.
My good is always here,
Always available.
As you observe others receiving their coins,
Notice if there is any lingering comparison,
Resentment or judgment.
Perhaps you feel envy for those who seem to have received blessings with less effort or perhaps you feel guilt for wishing you had started earlier.
Breathe deeply and affirm,
I release all judgment and trust in the infinite abundance of spirit.
I celebrate the blessings of others knowing there is more than enough for all.
I am grateful for my own unique journey.
Feel a lightness in your heart as you let go of these weights.
Imagine the landowner smiling at you,
Reminding you that your reward is yours simply because you are part of this vineyard.
Finally,
As you prepare to leave the vineyard,
Reflect on the lesson of this day that abundance is not earned by time or effort but by alignment with grace.
You are always welcomed,
Always provided for and always loved by the source of all creation.
As you walk toward the gates of the vineyard,
Carry your dinardas with you in your heart.
Let it symbolize trust,
Gratitude and a deep knowing that you are always in the flow of divine good.
Whisper to yourself,
I trust in divine timing.
All my needs are met with ease and grace.
I am abundant,
I am loved and I am enough.
And take a deep breath and slowly bring your awareness back to the present moment.
Wiggle your fingers and toes,
Feel the surface beneath you.
When you are ready,
Open your eyes and carry the wisdom of this meditation with you as you move through your day,
As you go on your journey,
Trusting that your good is always unfolding in perfect timing and there is infinite grace for all.
So a call to action.
Simply because we can hear and we can listen and we can read but nothing really happens till we take action.
So a call to action.
Cultivate gratitude daily and most of you all I am sure are already in this habit.
Cultivate gratitude daily.
Try to,
If you are new to the practice of cultivating gratitude,
You can start with a gratitude journal.
Spend maybe not even a minute in the morning,
Note down 5 things you are grateful for or in the night,
Simply note down 5 things you are grateful for.
At least to start to get into the practice.
Over the period of time try to live with an attitude of gratitude.
Simply by going thank you,
Thank you,
Thank you.
Secondly,
Release comparison,
Release judgment.
Understand that comparing and judging people,
These are behaviors that we have learned,
These are behaviors that have been taught to us.
We didn't come into this world with these behaviors.
We learned them on the way.
And the good thing is that if we have learned something,
We can unlearn it also.
So practice not comparing,
Practice being non-judgmental.
Act on opportunities without hesitation.
Because sometimes these opportunities come our way and then there's this whole self-talk that's going on in our mind and then fear comes in and then our mind tells us why we cannot or why we should not do things.
So try to act on opportunities without hesitation.
Try to practice generosity of spirit.
Shift from envy to joy.
Celebrate the successes of others.
Also try to trust in the flow of divine timing.
Let go of the pressures to catch up.
Let go of the need to earn your worth.
But make sure you're doing what you need to do.
You're putting in your best effort.
And reflection,
Meditation,
These are very good ways to become more aware of yourself,
To align yourself with grace.
Affirmations,
Meditation,
Self-reflection.
And spend some time affirming your worthiness because we are all perfect just the way we are.
And we are enough,
We have always been enough and we will always be enough.
Thank you everyone for being here.
Love,
Light,
Blessings.
Namaste.
