Hello beautiful well-being family,

It's lovely to be back with you.

I've got some interesting ideas to talk about today that I've been thinking about a lot and I know that these ideas have really impacted my life enormously so I wanted to share them with you.

And the subject that we're going to be talking about today is this idea that thoughts become things.

Now I know that this has been,

It's been reduced to a Facebook meme but it's so much more than that and I just want to give it a little bit of airtime today so that we can really explore how it's not a sort of woo-woo new age concept but actually a very practical and real thing.

So let's,

And I just quickly want to say that I first came across this when I was working with a coach about five years ago and it really changed my life.

So I want to offer it to you because I,

For two reasons,

I want it to change your life as well but also because it for me it's really good to remember how important these concepts are and how quickly my thoughts can turn into reality.

So let's let's explore this together.

So the first thing I want to talk about is this idea of the thoughts become things cycle and you can read,

There's some very good books by Mike Dooley who's written about this if you want to explore this more.

I can't remember the names of the books but just Google Mike Dooley and you'll find him.

He's awesome and I think it's him who talks about the thoughts become things cycle.

I can't quite remember but it basically goes something like this and it so fits with psychotherapy.

When I first read it I was like oh yeah this totally makes sense right and the idea is that when we think a thought repetitively that thought turns into a belief and the belief then fuels our behavior and behavior contributes to outcome and then the outcome makes us think thoughts again about the way the world is.

So you can see how that loop can run so easily and I just want to explore each each part of that because you know thinking a thought repetitively there's so much interesting neuroplasticity research about this that when we think a thought repetitively the brain actually changes itself.

The neurons wire up more intensely,

The myelin sheath cells migrate across to insulate that neural pathway and make it run harder and faster.

The brain changes when we think a thought repetitively and brain can also change when we stop thinking that thought repetitively right but the more we think a thought and here's the scary thing you know of the 60,

000 thoughts a day that we're thinking 90% of them are repetitive 80% of them are negative that's kind of scary to think about right.

Like a lot of our thought is habitual I guess that's where I'm going and I know that mine is I know that my mind will always try to gravitate towards these same same thoughts that are worrisome thoughts which I find really interesting and I have quite a lot of awareness about that now so now I just notice it and I think okay and I don't need to go there this is my mind wanting to go to worry about the same subjects it always worries about instead of worrying I'm gonna do something different and that's really what I wanted to talk to you about today this idea that whenever you find yourself beginning to worry and particularly if you notice that it's a habitual pattern of worry because most of us have very habitual patterns of worry what I want you to try doing is to just become aware oh here I am this is my worry pattern and then instead of following that worry pattern you know where that goes right I want you to imagine what it is that you would like to emerge in your life instead of this thing that you're worrying about does that make sense so to basically turn around a hundred and eighty degrees from the worry and so say I'm worrying about my health instead of spending my precious energy and time worrying about my health I'm gonna turn around 180 degrees and imagine myself healthy vibrant energized active and happy right so that's how I want to be it's the opposite of what I'm worrying about but it's how I want to be and if I spend the time that I would have spent worrying about my health imagining and visualizing this positive healthy version of myself who does yoga every day who sleeps well who makes good dietary choices who is keeping to a good weight and who is well the difference is amazing right like I can feel the difference in my body just as I talk about it and I know where worrying about my health gets me it gets me into a very different physical state in my body so here's the thing right our negative thoughts actually are very powerful and so are our positive thoughts and we do have choice about where we're going to spend that energy so I'm going to invite you here's our little experiential I'm going to invite you to think about what is your habitual worry about what do you have bitually worry about and when you've got that firmly in your mind and you can feel how it makes you feel in your body I want you to think about what's 180 degrees opposite of that what would you like to be happening in your life how would you like your life to be panning out and then I'm going to urge you to actually spend a bit of time dwelling in that fantasy dwelling in that fantasy about how you would like your life to be and and be as elaborate with detail as you can right and you'll notice that this will make you feel a certain way that is very different from the worry the way the worry makes you feel and what I know about this is that when you spend time regularly like five minutes every day imagining what it is that you do want whether it's for yourself or for a child for example it can be very powerful doing this for a child that reality actually emerges I know it sounds very woo-woo but it's actually not right it's like we're sending out something in the matrix and that that becomes a reality so I'd love you to try this I'd love you to give it a go like I can tell you some great examples in my life where my negative thoughts have become reality so quickly it's almost scary and I'll tell you one specific example where at one point when my kids were younger we had to buy laptops for them and they were both quite young I mean one of them was 12 years old and I'm handing over this you know hugely expensive laptop and I guess and I was really concerned that they were not gonna know how to look after them that these laptops would not last very long anyway I think I actually said as I handed the laptop over something like don't spill any drinks on this laptop well you can imagine what happened three weeks later glass of water all over the laptop laptop ruined and you know I laugh about it because even at the time I recognized I made this happen I actually feel felt like I made that happen and it happened so quickly and maybe you know of situations in your life where similar things have happened right so our unconscious is powerful our minds are powerful every thought we think is having an effect so when you and I don't want to scare you about the negative thoughts right like we can't help having those negative thoughts but what I want to invite you to do is to really build awareness and start this practice that when you find yourself in that negative habitual place use it as a signpost to turn towards what you would like to create in life and the way you would like your life to be unfolding so I do this practice every single day pretty much every single day and it's so powerfully positive I enjoy it so much that I'm I'm actually pulled towards doing it like it sets up a new habit for me because something that makes you feel good is something you're gonna dive into again and again and again right so give it a go and see what happens and I want you to practice without any expectation but notice just notice what emerges in your life because what I've certainly noticed over time is that thoughts are powerful we are powerful we are powerful creators of our own reality and when we start actually paying attention to the thoughts that we think and the beliefs that we're creating from those thoughts we can make enormous changes in our worlds and I suppose I've done most of my most the most of the biggest practice that I've done with this has been around my feelings about my youngest son who has some special needs and you know when he was younger it just I used to worry about it all the time I used to worry about him I used to worry about how his life was gonna turn out I just used to worry and it it was awful it made me feel terrible and I I know that it didn't help him and when I worked with this coach some years ago I realized I really needed to turn that around and I started visualizing what I did want for him what I wanted for him out of life what a good life would look like for him and for anyone right what a good life looks like love health wealth abundance and I would go into these these four areas and really really flesh it out right love means beautiful friends kind hearted generous adventurous loving friends laughter opportunity adventure fun enjoyment and health means having energy feeling vibrantly alive feeling good in my body feeling that I can do the things that I want to do that I have so much energy that I'm able to do everything I want to do I can sleep well I can eat well every system in my body is working well and wealth is abundance enough money to be comfortable a beautiful home to live in enough food in the fridge and friends love connection and when I go through that little five minute experience I often do it when I'm out walking and often I'll make it last more than five minutes because it feels so good to allow myself to stay in this place that is so positive so I'm interested in how you can begin to build awareness around the places that your mind might be going that don't serve you very well and how you can make that 180 degree shift to what you do want and spend a bit of time doing creative
