A guided meditation on change as we experience it in the breath. In bringing our attention closely to the breath, we can discover a quality that marks everything else in our experience; change. This change–also described as 'impermanence'–was seen deeply by the Buddha upon Enlightenment and became one of his most fundamental teachings. If we could see change deeply, we would live more in accordance with the way things are; transforming suffering into a sense of harmony in our experience.

Hello there.

This is Sabetra Mettie recording from the London Buddha Centre and this is another one of our meditations for the Life with Full Attention course.

And today's meditation is going to focus on embracing the nature of experience.

So,

What we're going to do is we're going to try and develop a concentrated mind and then we're going to try and develop to deepen into clarity about the real nature of breathing.

And I'm going to guide you through this.

So first of all,

As usual,

If you set yourself up somewhere where you can sit upright and be comfortable and where you won't be distracted.

So take a moment to do that.

Good.

So,

Just making sure we're established in body awareness.

Oh,

We're starting with the body.

Oh,

We're starting with the sense of the weight dropping down.

Energy rising up,

Your spine rising up in its own natural curves.

Her head just poised.

Softening the face.

Softening the hands.

The belly.

And then noticing that our body is breathing.

So see if you can straight away just tune into the sense.

We don't need to make any effort to breathe.

The body is just breathing all by itself.

And we just let the body breathe without trying to control the breath.

We'll just spend a while establishing ourselves in concentration.

You might start with counting the breath or if you already feel more concentrated,

Just following the breath with your attention.

And keep getting closer and closer to the actual experience.

Actual sensations of this thing we call the breath.

Now just see if we can experience the changingness of the breath.

Again,

It's not an idea about change.

It's more like allowing the changing nature of the sensations to reveal themselves to us.

Just tune into that changingness.

Feel how that can deepen our concentration as well.

Keep tuning in.

Tune into the actual experience of changingness.

And start to see that all that is is changingness.

There actually is no thing called the breath.

So there's nothing to hold onto.

See if you can just let go into this changingness.

No need to try to control anything.

See if you can experience the relief and release that comes when you let go like this.

Alright and thanks again.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Keep softening the face.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Keep noticing any feelings of relief or release,

Allowing them to deepen.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Keep noticing any feelings of relief or release,

Allowing them to deepen.

Keep noticing that all there is is a flow of changing sensation.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

There is experience,

But experience doesn't map onto anything fixed and unchanging.

True of the breath,

True of all experience.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

And now for the last few minutes,

Just letting go the efforts that we're making,

But still sitting still with our eyes closed.

Resting the mind in broad awareness.

So aware of our whole body and its sensations.

Aware of sounds,

Not seeking after them,

Not trying to shut them out,

Including sounds and our awareness.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

And then when you're ready,

In your own time,

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.

And then once again,

See if you can create a little pose now before starting to get on with the other things of your day.

Let the breath blow through you like a breeze through leaves.
