A good way of cultivating mindfulness in every day life is to regularly practice this three stage breathing space. You can do this anywhere – on the bus, at work, in the kitchen. The breathing space is particularly useful if you are starting to feel that things are getting on top of you. It's a good antidote to stress and negative states of mind. If you're stuck in traffic, if your computer crashes, if you're feeling overwhelmed. See if you can practice the breathing space twice a day.

3 stage breathing space.

So closing your eyes and just tuning into how you are just now.

How you are in your mind,

The kind of thoughts you are having.

How you are in your feelings,

How you feel okay or not okay.

And how you are just now in your body,

Comfortable or uncomfortable,

Relaxed or tense.

So just noticing as best you can how you are just now.

And then you try to tune into your breath in the second stage.

So just follow your breath in,

Follow your breath out.

Gathering your awareness around your breath,

Coming in and going out.

And then extending your awareness around your breath to include more and more of your experience.

More and more of the sensations of your body,

Just as they are.

Extending out,

Allowing yourself to feel just what you feel just now without trying to change anything.

And then start to tune in again to the weight of your body on the chair.

Start to notice the sounds around you.

And then opening your eyes,

Taking in what you can see with your eyes open.

And then see if you can just take some of the awareness that you have developed just now into the next activity.
