Hi,
I'm Kirsten,
And I'll help you bore yourself to sleep tonight.
If you've ever done any reading about sleep hygiene,
You've probably at some point encountered the advice that if you can't sleep,
Just stay in bed for about 20 minutes at a time,
And then get up and do something else for a little bit,
Like reading,
Watering the plants,
Anything that doesn't involve a screen.
This is so your mind doesn't start to think of your bed as a place where you struggle and toss and turn.
This is good advice,
But if you're anything like me,
When you're kinda half asleep in bed,
And you're comfortable,
And you kinda feel like you might get to sleep,
But you're just not quite there yet,
Really the last thing that you feel like doing is actually getting yourself upright and going and doing anything.
At this point,
You just want to be asleep.
So,
Some time ago,
I ran into this situation when I couldn't sleep,
And I made a deal with myself.
I said,
Okay,
I will get up in 20 minutes if I haven't fallen asleep,
But I have to count the full 20 minutes out.
So 20 minutes is 1200 seconds,
Right?
So what I'm going to do is count to 1200,
And if I'm still awake at 1200,
Then I have to get up.
I did not make it to 1200 seconds that night.
I've used this technique many times,
And I usually don't get anywhere near 1200.
So this might work for you too.
In this meditation,
We'll start off counting together.
I'll count with you up to 100,
And you can carry on from there yourself.
If you lose count,
Which you probably will,
Just start back at the last number that you can remember counting.
I'll keep the music going,
And if you make it to 1200,
Then it's time to get up and move around and do something else for a little while before coming back to bed.
All right?
Get yourself nice and comfortable and settle in.
Take a deep breath.
