Grief and loss can be a source of great suffering. When we've lost a loved one, we may cope by speaking with support, praying, crying, or speaking out loud to the one who's gone. We often overlook the soothing value of listening. In this meditation, you'll be gently guided to create a calm, grounded space in which to listen with intention.

I invite you to begin by sitting or lying down in a comfortable position,

Noting that your spine is straight and your limbs are uncrossed.

If it feels safe and comfortable,

I invite you to close your eyes and take two deep breaths,

Filling your chest and lungs at your own pace.

In this place of relaxed comfort,

I invite you to think of your loved one whom you're missing.

I invite you to see their image in your mind and bring your attention to the love that you feel for them.

I invite you to acknowledge that love and note that it's real and you feel it,

Even if your loved one is no longer with you.

As you sit with this awareness of love,

I invite you to notice your body.

Notice if there's a part of your body that's embodying that feeling of love.

And if there is,

I invite you to notice whether or not there are edges to that feeling,

Or if it expands through your entire body and maybe even beyond.

I invite you now to notice if any other emotions are present,

And if so,

Allow them to be a part of your awareness.

While noticing them,

I invite you to silently name them and acknowledge your awareness of those emotions.

There's no need to understand them or judge them,

But simply notice and name them.

There is love.

There is pain.

I notice longing.

There is anger.

Whatever emotion you become aware of,

Allow yourself to note it and silently name it.

And notice if those emotions feel embodied in any part of your physical self.

And if so,

Notice if there are any edges to those feelings.

In this place of acceptance and awareness,

I invite you to set an intention for this meditation.

Your intention may be to have a moment of comfort or reduced suffering.

It may be a wish for the wisdom and strength to cope with the loss.

Your intention may be a request for a beautiful memory.

It's also perfectly fine to have no intention at all and to remain open-minded,

Requesting only that this space be whatever you need it to be.

Once you've set your intention,

I invite you to look for the next thought that comes to your mind.

You may notice words or feelings.

You may see an image or a memory.

What comes to your awareness may also be a sense of color or sound,

Scent or touch.

Whatever comes to your awareness,

I invite you to notice it and then look for the next thing that comes to your mind.

I invite you to continue to notice whatever comes to you without judgment.

It may seem related to your intention or it may not.

Please trust the process that whatever comes to you now is just right.

I invite you to take two full,

Deep breaths,

Filling your chest and lungs at your own pace,

As you offer a silent thank you.

Thank you to yourself for taking this moment to notice your experience and to listen to whatever comes.

Thank you also to your own inner wisdom or the universe or God or whatever is meaningful to you.

When you're ready,

I invite you to slowly flutter your eyes open,

And I wish you peace and comfort.
