Hello meditator,
Thank you for joining me today for this meditation on awakening consciousness and becoming aware.
So in his book,
The Untethered Soul,
Michael Singer writes,
When you contemplate the nature of self,
You are meditating.
That is why meditation is the highest state.
It is the return to the root of your being,
The simple awareness of being aware.
Once you become conscious of the consciousness itself,
You attain a totally different state.
You are now aware of who you are.
You have become an awakened being.
So today we will work on this a bit,
We will work on starting to really become aware of who we are.
Now the reason we like to do that is because when we become more aware,
When we are able to take that step back and we become aware that we are not the things happening outside of us.
We are not the leaky roof or we are not the laundry that needs to be done.
We are not the boss.
We are not what is out there.
What we are is what's inside.
And when we become aware of that,
We're able to step back.
We're able to extend into the space of possibilities.
We're able to sit in the space of potential,
Of something new.
We're able to be more objective with our focus.
And by being objective,
We're able to really be present with our experiences and our present moment.
So let's first start our meditation today by becoming comfortable.
And remember,
We're working on being present.
So really find that comfortable position,
Even if you need to pause this meditation for a moment.
Being aware that yes,
You are not the body,
But you are aware of how the body is positioned.
You are consciousness.
You are awareness.
And you are aware of what's happening in your body,
Which is the vessel or the temple of your consciousness.
So let the body get comfortable.
Let the body relax.
And as your body starts to relax and sink down,
Let's bring our focus to our breath flowing in and out,
In and out.
And really see if you can deepen that breath a bit.
Let's see if we can take some nice,
Big diaphragmatic breaths,
Using the whole body to fill with air and emptying out completely and totally.
Almost thinking of the breath as a power source,
Drawing in focus and love and concentration.
And on the exhale,
Drawing out that stress.
Now let's turn our consciousness,
Our awareness to our mind.
Start noticing what's happening in there.
Are there thoughts?
Are there emotions,
Memories,
Worries?
Let's see if we can take a step back from those thoughts.
And as they come in,
As you notice them,
Can you just let them be called a thought?
Every time something comes in,
Can you just say thought?
It's like you're labeling it and putting it away,
Packing it away in its little box and labeling it with thought.
Now as you practice this,
Every time you are bringing in a thought and putting it in its box and packaging it and putting it away,
Every time you label it thought,
Who is doing this?
There must be someone back there.
Is it your consciousness?
Is it your higher self?
Let's see if we can let our higher self now become a little bit more aware of awareness.
Let's see if we can start to allow the mind to just quiet just a bit.
Now it might not stop.
There might be other thoughts coming in,
But just let's see if we can let them feed.
Can we become aware that there are thoughts happening within the mind without attaching to them,
Without following them?
Can we just be aware as if we're observing a car going by?
We just notice it.
Now as we become aware of those thoughts and we just pull back a little bit more,
Can we find a space with maybe just a little bit of quiet?
Can we give ourselves just this space of awareness,
Of being in this consciousness,
Being in this connection with higher self?
Can we give ourselves this space to rest?
Can we allow ourselves the grace to just be here?
And as we continue to connect with this awareness,
If thought seems to bubble up,
If you notice yourself getting involved with it,
It's okay.
Just notice that you're noticing again.
Just noticing that you again are aware and give yourself the permission to step back,
The permission to again be aware of your awareness.
Beautiful job,
Meditator.
I just want to remind you that we can follow this practice anytime.
You're always welcome as you go throughout your day to take a step back and just start to become aware of awareness.
And every time you do this practice,
Remember it will get a little easier for you.
If you're just trying this for the first time today,
Come back to it.
Maybe tomorrow it will be a little simpler.
Meditation is a practiced skill.
It's not a skill we're all born with.
So I want to thank you for sitting with me and becoming consciousness today.
When you're ready,
Gently open those eyes,
Bringing yourself back to the experience of the present moment,
Of you sitting in your chair,
Of you taking in your surroundings.
I hope you have a beautiful,
Aware rest of your day.
