
Classical Yoga Nidra
In Sanskrit, Nidra means sleep. However, yogic sleep is distinct from sleeping, dreaming, or even meditation. Yoga Nidra is a conscious state of deep relaxation and awareness. In this state, we are given access to restore our abilities to heal by reducing stress and bringing a newfound sense of clarity and calm. Practiced regularly, it is not only restorative but can be deeply transformative as well. This is a guided yoga nidra experience. I recommend doing the practice on a yoga mat with a rolled-up blanket or cushion under the knees and a pillow under your head. To do the practice, simply follow along with my voice in the recording.

You are about to embark on a journey of progressive deep relaxation.
Yoga Nidra is best done during a time of day when you won't fall asleep easily.
I recommend doing the practice on a yoga mat with a rolled up blanket or cushion underneath the knees and a pillow under your head.
If you get cold easily,
Feel free to cover yourself with a blanket.
You are meant to be comfortable for the duration of the practice.
But if it is difficult for you to lie down flat,
You may want to try a seated position or to lay out on a reclining chair.
When on a yoga mat,
The best way to position yourself is with hands down by your side at a 45 degree angle with palms up.
Legs should be slightly apart in a relaxed position.
Before your practice,
Make sure you use the bathroom.
Take the time you need to make yourself comfortable before starting the practice and silence your phone and alarms so that you are not interrupted.
To do the practice,
Simply follow along with my voice in the recording,
Remaining awake and aware for the entire practice.

Now let's prepare by doing any final shifting and squirming that you need to do to be comfortable.

Let's begin by establishing an intention to remain awake and aware for the entire practice today.
Repeat to yourself,

I would like you to completely relax.
There is nowhere you need to go and nothing that you need to do for a while.
Listen to my voice and allow my voice to guide your awareness.
If you hear any outside sounds,
Let them take you deeper within.

Remember to stay 100% awake and 100% aware.

Go ahead and bring your awareness to your right hand.
Notice your hand.
Notice where it is and what it is touching.

Bring your awareness to your right thumb.
Notice if it is suspended in the air or if it is touching anything.

And let gravity take your thumb into whatever position that gravity wants it to be.

Feel the sensation of each of the ten toes and let go of any holding,

Then,
Move your awareness to the soles of your feet.

Notice the position of your feet.

Explore the area with your inner eyes.

The calves and ankles relax more fully and the feet fall into whatever position is naturally right.

Moving your awareness to the kneecaps.
Notice the tops of the kneecaps that attach to your thighs.

Between the knees to your pubic bone.

Explore the bottoms of your thighs for any areas of holding,

Allow your legs to become heavier and to sink into the surface below you.

And now bring your awareness to your hips and your bottom.

As you do,

See if you can feel its warmth and weight.

You don't have to know the anatomy.
Just look around and see if you can notice any areas of holding,

Allow the life energy to flow freely through you without obstruction.
