This meditation is inspired by the Thich Nhat Hanh quote: "Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.” When we smile we are better equipped to deal with stress. Our levels of dopamine and serotonin increase leaving us feeling happy and with lower levels of stress and it can work even when we don’t feel like it. There are other reported health benefits like pain reduction, lower BP and increased immune function. Experience smiling and breathing for yourself in this meditation to see how it feels for you.

Transcript

Settling into a comfortable position,

One that feels right for you in this moment.

You might be sitting or standing or lying down,

Totally up to you.

Bring a little bit of movement into your body,

Perhaps moving forwards and backwards or side to side.

Be aware of your body and how each movement feels.

Tune into your breath,

Your inhale and your exhale.

Your beautiful precious breath that is there for you each and every day,

In each and every moment.

Allow in some gratitude for your breath,

As much as you can manage.

Allow your heart to feel as open and soft as possible as you build with gratitude for your beautiful breath.

Take your awareness to the top of your head,

The back of your head,

Your face,

Your neck and shoulders,

Your chest area,

The full length of your left arm from your shoulder all the way down to your fingertips,

The full length of your right arm from your shoulder all the way down to your fingertips.

Drift your awareness to your spine,

The full length of your spine,

Becoming aware of your upper abdomen,

Lower abdomen,

Your pelvic area,

Your left hip and your left leg all the way down to your foot and your toes,

The full length of your left leg.

Now floating your awareness to your right hip and the full length of your right leg from your hip down to your foot all the way down to your toes,

Being aware of your whole body in this moment.

Bring your awareness to your face,

Rest your awareness on your eyebrows,

Eyelashes,

Your nose,

Your cheeks and your jaw.

Now see if you can bring a smile to your face,

Just a gentle half smile and see how this feels within your body,

See if it relaxes your jaw,

Tune in to your experience,

Feel what it feels like to smile in this moment in time.

Smiling even when you don't feel like it can support you in feeling calmer,

Your jaw might soften,

Your teeth might unclench and it can also allow in uplifting feelings.

Staying with your smile for a moment,

Now see if you can become aware of your breath and your smile,

Allow your awareness to rest with your breath and your smile,

Breathing and smiling,

Breathing and smiling,

Tuning in to any positive experiences that this practice has created for you,

Allow any positive energy to flow throughout your entire being into each and every cell,

Filling you up and filling the space around you,

Becoming aware of your body as a whole once again,

Noticing your feet and your hands and if it feels right for you begin to gently move them,

Very gently and slowly start to move your body however it feels right for you,

Feeling into each movement,

Perhaps stretching,

Twisting,

Turning and when you feel ready opening your eyes with a big smile on your face,

Reflecting on your experience today,

Feeling ready for the next part of your day.
