This exercise helps to free up your mind.
Start with a question you want an answer to or a clear idea of something you're trying to accomplish or an outcome you desire.
It could be,
How do I resolve an issue at work?
What possible solutions haven't I thought of?
Or what's needed to provide a breakthrough here?
Whatever it is,
Make sure it's within your control and frame it positively.
For example,
How can I get my colleague to listen to me might change to,
How can I best communicate my ideas to ensure I feel heard?
Remember,
You're not using this practice for more thinking or to try and figure anything out,
But to give your mind a rest and to free up any stuck thinking.
Set a timer for five to ten minutes,
If you like,
And start your practice in the usual way,
Sitting upright,
Closing your eyes,
And taking a few slow,
Deep breaths,
Letting your mind soften and relax.
Allow your question or concern to sit in the background as you do your practice.
Whenever the mind wanders or you get distracted,
Let go of thinking and return your attention to your breath.
You're simply allowing some space for any ideas or insights to bubble up.
If you notice that you start to barrel down and try and figure things out,
Just go back to your breath.
Overthinking squashes your creativity,
Which needs some breathing room.
Just see what arrives.
It could be just a piece of an idea,
A word,
An image,
Or perhaps nothing arrives.
That's perfectly fine.
You may need to do this a few times or you might have a shazam moment the first time.
Who knows?
When you've finished,
Open your eyes,
Jot down any ideas,
And allow the other part of your brain,
The part that's more logical,
To help you figure it out.
