This music piece was written as an homage to my mom and one of her good friends who ceremoniously canoe down a river in Minnesota at the first thaw. The river then is very cold, filled with ice still thawing, but it's their way of embracing Spring after the long hard Winter. I was born near the headwaters of the Mississippi, where it's nothing more than a stream. Now I live in New Orleans, where the same stream grows to a mammoth flowing body. Rivers, like the ocean, are a very spiritual place for me.
