
Yoga Meditation Flowing Through Life
Yoga literally means union but that is not its meaning. The meaning of yoga is ‘that which brings you to reality’ and we practice yoga to help us connect with our experiential reality so we understand how reality is made. So hello and welcome to this meditation.
I thought I would just say a few words before the meditation starts mainly because this meditation was recorded live for students and we kind of just go straight into meditating without any preamble about taking a meditation posture or getting ready to meditate.
So I'm not really a kind of teacher that says that you should have a particular style of meditation posture and I believe that you can meditate in lots of different ways and lots of different postures but I do suggest that you sit upright,
That you do have a sense of dignity while sitting,
That you do try to remain still for the duration of the meditation.
So no fidgeting,
No scratching things,
Just allow things to be as they are.
Also with this style of meditation what we're really doing is just allowing the words to wash over you.
Not really trying to listen to the words too much but really try to listen to what is being pointed to beyond the words.

So today we're just going to start by closing our eyes,
Take one deep breath in through our nose and a nice long out breath through our mouth.
We're going to do that again.
We're going to take one long deep breath in through our nose.
We're going to hold it for a moment just to build some tension and then we're going to release that through our mouth.
Really notice what releases for you on that second out breath.
Just allow your breathing to slow down,
Your body to relax,
Your mind to go quiet.
This doesn't take any effort to relax.
Relaxation is not an active state.
Just relax and connect with that feeling of being present,
Being here.
Just connect with this stillness and peace inside of you.
Just notice that if we just let go of our thinking,
Let go of this need to control our experience or resist what's happening right now.
Naturally just fall into this space of openness and stillness.
Notice this feeling of being here,
Of being present.
It's always here.
Sense of being present,
Sense of observing.
It's also just a thought.
We create a sense of observer,
Creating a sense of ourselves,
A sense of being present.
What we're looking for is that thing that just sits behind that sense.
Of course we're pointing to it with words like thing and behind as if it is an object.
It's not an object,
It's no thing.
It's this infinite space of peace and openness and oneness.
It's the movie screen on which everything plays.
The whole of life plays out on.
The sense of being neutral.
Just allowing things to be as they are.
Without wanting them to be different,
Without needing them to be different.
Trying to make them different to reach this space,
This openness.
No need to control your experience or stop any kind of thinking that's going on.
There's no one here that's controlling thought or is even doing the thinking.
Thinking happens.
Thinking is just like the natural noise of the background universe.
It's like a little radio signal that's always on.
We can pay attention.
We can pay attention to that static.
If we just don't pay any attention,
If we open up our awareness to everything that's going on,
To the one thing that's going on,
We can just see thinking for what it is.
Just this transitory phenomenon that comes and goes.
No one thought is truth.
No one thought is representation of the world.
They can't be found in a thought.
Can't be found in any belief or any identification with one side or the other.
That would lead me into separation.
That would be too.
I am not too.
I'm just this one thing that's going on.
There's this space of equanimity,
Seeing it all as it is.
Just allowing things to be as they are.
Trying to change any one experience to another experience.
Trying to be a feeling in the next moment.
Trying to get anywhere,
Be anyone.
Not your noun,
You're not your category,
You're not your identity,
Your beliefs,
Your thinking,
Your ideas.
The space that it all happens in.
That space is all of it.
Never ending,
Infinite,
Vast.
Keep looking for something other than this.
Some other reality,
Some other place,
Some other thing that's going to give us what we want.
This sense of peace and openness,
This sense of peace and stillness and freedom is already here.
Just sitting behind your thinking beyond your mind.
This space has no self,
Self and other.
There's only one of us.
You include me and I include you.
There's just one voice here,
Your voice.
There's one thought here,
Your thought.
There's not two things going on.
There's this sense of beingness,
This sense of aliveness,
This sense of amness.
The thing that we're always looking for.
We take ourselves away from this space without thinking,
With identifying with our thoughts and our experience and our ideas.
It will bring a sense of tension,
A sense of separation.
Just allow all those concepts and beliefs and models just to pass through,
Not paying them any attention.
Allow life to flow through you.
Move along with the flow of life,
Not wanting it to be different,
Trying to hold on to the previous experience or get to the next experience.
Just allow things to be as they are.
There's any sense of holding on,
Of resisting your experience or any sense of frustration,
Annoyance.
Just soften and allow those things to disappear,
To dissolve.
Move along with the experience.
Notice how much peace and stillness is here.
Without trying to do anything,
Can't manufacture it.
It's just beneath the surface noise,
Just beneath all your thinking.
There's this place of calmness and peace and openness.
Just have to allow your body and mind to settle,
To not direct your conscious attention into one particular experience,
One particular viewpoint,
One particular idea or thought.
Just allow it all to be as it is.
Even the idea of allowing something suggests there's something here that can do the allowing.
It all just happens.
Life flows from one event to the other.
Just like a river flows.
Sometimes it can seem that we're the stick or the flotsam in the river.
We're getting butted around by the stream and the water and the rapids.
Who we really are is the river,
An object in the river.
The whole river of life flowing along with it.
The whole universe just unfolding in the moment.
Everything that's happening is not happening outside of you.
Nothing here to be in separation.
It's all happening within you.
There's only one thing going on,
One consciousness that we all share.
Everything's appearing within that consciousness and you are the consciousness.
You're not the body-mind that's appearing within consciousness.
It's just one consciousness and we all share that one consciousness.
Everything that's appearing in your consciousness is also you.
That voice is appearing in your consciousness and it's not separate from you,
It is you.
You're the one generating this voice.
You're the one hearing this voice.
It's all you.
You're the one hearing this voice.
You're the one hearing this voice.
You're the one hearing this voice.
There's nowhere you have to go,
Nowhere you have to be.
There's never anything that you need to do.
Action just happens.
You flow from one moment to the next.
Things unfold and everything is as it should be.
It can't be any other way.
So in a moment we're going to bring this peace and stillness back into our visual field,
Back into the manifest universe.
So whenever you're ready take one deep breath in through your nose and a nice long out breath through your mouth.
Think open your eyes and come back to the room.
