Awakening Prana - Frontal Pathway
by Ganga Dhara
This practice gives a direct experience of Prana - the life force that flows within us. When we are able to experience this life force directly, we develop the ability to direct, control and expand it as we need to. The frontal pathway is a nadi in which the vital life force flows and this is a foundational practice of the Prana Vidya system. When the mind focuses on the prana, it too becomes more subtle and expanded. Vitality will be experienced on all dimensions of the being.
Transcript
Hariyom Tutsut Please prepare for the practice of Awakening Prana in the frontal pathway.
Start to settle yourself into a comfortable meditation asana.
The meditation asana is one in which the body can be totally at ease for the duration of the practice.
In the posture ensure that the spine can be erect,
That there is a sense of upliftment through the spine.
As you settle the body into the position,
Make sure that the coverings on the body are comfortable and that any distracting items are removed.
Place the hands in a meditation mudra,
On the thighs or in the lap,
And then close the eyes.
Begin to connect with the physical body,
Bringing the awareness into the space of the physical body.
The body becomes the seat for meditation.
Begin to prepare this seat now by making any final adjustments,
Seeing that there is stability and balance in the base of the body,
Upliftment through the spine with an open chest,
Relaxed shoulders,
And that the neck and head are balanced.
As the body becomes comfortable,
Start to bring the attention to the region of the head.
Be aware of this region and feel a sense of relaxation pervading this whole region,
Relaxing the facial features,
Moving down into the neck area,
Down into the shoulders,
Relaxing the whole of the shoulders,
Moving down into the arms,
The hands,
Feeling that both arms and hands are relaxed and balanced in a steady position,
Awareness to the whole trunk of the body,
The torso,
Feel that there is a softening,
A letting go through the whole front of the torso,
And that the whole region of the back is starting to let go of any tension,
Any tightness,
Feel that the whole back,
The muscles of the back,
The spine,
Are becoming more and more relaxed.
Be aware of the pelvis,
The buttocks,
Releasing any tension from this region,
Bringing the awareness into both of the legs and feet,
Feeling the balance,
The symmetry in both of the legs and feet,
And that all tension,
All tightness is being released.
Begin to have a glimpse of the whole body parts,
See and feel the head and neck,
Shoulders,
Both arms and hands,
The whole trunk of the body,
The base of the body,
Both legs and feet,
And be aware now of the whole body,
Feel into each and every part of the whole body sitting in the meditation posture.
This is your posture for meditation,
Begin to experience the whole posture as one harmonious unit,
One position in which energy can flow freely,
Grounded and anchored,
And at the same time open and uplifted.
And as you begin to gaze into the space of the body,
Start to feel that this is a very natural position,
This is a very natural way of being,
That it is part of your nature to sit in stillness,
To create the seat in which the energies of the mind,
The sensory perception can be directed inwards to the interior field,
To the body,
Towards the inner being.
And as you sit in the meditation position,
Feeling natural,
Comfortable and at ease,
Begin to observe the sense of steadiness that is filling the whole space of the body.
And now see how the body is sitting so steady,
So quiet,
Steady and quiet.
And now bring the attention to the natural breath.
Begin to know the incoming breath and know the outgoing breath.
There is nothing to do.
I know each breath in,
I know each breath out,
I know the whole of the inhalation,
And I know the whole of the exhalation.
With each breath flowing in,
The awareness moves side by side.
Each breath flowing out,
Awareness side by side.
As though breath and awareness are best friends,
Moving arm in arm.
If any thoughts or objects come in the mind,
Let them come.
I know the breath,
Moving in,
Moving out.
Notice with the inhalation,
At the very end there is a slight pause,
And then the exhalation,
At the very end,
Slight pause,
Know the whole of the breath.
There is nothing but breath and awareness,
A harmonious flow.
You may feel a quality.
The breath is not just physical.
The breath contains a quality of light,
Vibration,
Sensation.
You are just observing.
Now bring the attention to the nose tip,
Attention to the nose tip.
Begin to follow the flow of breath here.
There is a sensation,
Vibration,
A movement of breath flowing in through the channels at the nose tip.
Begin to follow the breath from the nose tip all the way up and down into the back of the throat.
Feel this flow of breath moving in through the channels at the nose tip,
Coming into the space of the throat region.
Breath flows out from this space of the throat region,
Moving all the way back up and out through the channels at the nose tip.
Feel this pathway,
This movement of breath,
And begin to flow awareness alongside the breath through this pathway from nose tip to throat,
Throat to nose tip.
And now letting go of the nose tip,
Begin to experience the breath as though breathing in directly to this region of the throat and breathing out directly from this region of the throat.
The breath moves in,
Region of throat,
Breath moves out,
Region of the throat.
And notice here any sensation,
Vibration,
Light,
As breath and awareness begin to flow in and out of the space where the throat would be.
And now let the breathing be natural and begin to place the attention in this space of the throat region,
Not physical,
But where the throat would be.
And prepare to bring the awareness from this region all the way down through the space to the navel,
The region where the navel would be.
And now to feel the attention being drawn deeply down through the space of the being,
Moving down,
Down,
All the way down to the space behind the navel.
And begin to focus the attention here.
See or feel a point of light,
Space of the navel,
Steady point,
Luminous light,
And orientate the attention.
Focus the attention here,
Down in this region where the navel would be.
And with the attention here,
Bring the inner gaze upwards.
Begin to look up into the inner space from the region of the navel.
The inner gaze turns upwards,
Looking up into the space of the being.
And within this space,
Begin to see or feel or know the luminous channel coming into view,
Into perception.
There is a luminous hollow channel.
This is the subtle channel.
From the navel all the way up to the region of the throat,
Point of light.
See the point of luminous light in the region of the throat,
And in between the two points of light,
You see the luminous hollow channel coming more and more into view,
The frontal pathway in the space of your being.
Do not make any intense effort.
Just see what is revealed to you.
If you do not see the channel,
Have a sense of its presence.
It is there.
Begin to feel or perceive the qualities of this channel.
Luminous,
Hollow,
Very subtle,
Very fine.
This is a Nadi,
A channel in which the energy flows.
Begin now to bring the attention from the point of light at the navel and start to ascend upwards alongside this luminous channel.
Feel now that the attention,
The awareness,
Is working its way upwards steadily and slowly alongside the luminous channel all the way up to the point of light at the throat pit.
And when you reach the point of light at the throat pit,
Again begin to descend alongside the luminous channel,
Moving slowly and steadily all the way down to the point of light at the navel.
Again ascending with awareness up alongside the luminous Nadi,
The channel,
All the way up,
Point of light,
Throat pit,
Descending alongside luminous channel,
All the way down to the navel.
With the next ascension,
Begin to coordinate the breath so that breath and awareness ascending up alongside luminous channel,
Inhaling throat pit,
Breath and awareness descending alongside luminous channel,
Exhaling to the navel.
And continue this rotation,
Ascending breath and awareness,
Inhaling,
Descending breath and awareness,
Exhaling.
With each rotation ascending and descending,
Feel the awareness becoming finer.
The presence of the Nadi,
The vision,
The feeling becomes more and more clear,
More and more perceptible.
With each rotation the point of light in the region of the throat pit becomes more luminous,
Point of light at the navel more luminous.
And now at the end of the next rotation,
Pause at the light at the navel.
Fix the attention here,
Pausing for a few moments.
And as you do,
Gaze up into the inner space again at the luminous channel,
The pathway,
The Nadi.
And begin to notice,
To see,
That this luminous pathway has an opening,
Has an opening.
See how it's hollow inside.
With the next inhalation,
Breath and awareness enter inside the pathway,
Ascending all the way up,
Up,
Up,
Point of light at the throat pit.
Breath and awareness descend inside the luminous channel all the way down,
All the way down to the point of light at the navel.
Descending breath and awareness inside luminous channel,
Descending breath and awareness down the luminous channel.
Continue this rotation,
Breath and awareness flowing inside the luminous channel,
The Nadi.
There is no effort,
There is just a feeling,
A vision of breath and awareness ascending inside a subtle pathway,
A subtle channel,
Breath and awareness descending,
Subtle pathway,
Subtle channel in the inner field,
The inner being.
With each rotation,
There is an increased sense of light,
Of vibration,
Sensation.
There is no effort or difficulty.
Just see what is revealed to you from your inner being.
Watching the breath flowing up with awareness inside the pathway,
Seeing the two points of light becoming more luminous.
Watching the breath and awareness flow down luminous pathway,
Points becoming more luminous.
And now begin to feel that there is another force awakening,
That there is another quality emerging.
With the next inhalation and ascension,
Feel this force arising too up through the luminous pathway.
It is the force of prana,
The light beginning to flow with breath and awareness inside the channel.
With the exhalation,
Breath,
Awareness and prana,
The light flow back down.
Since this force of prana,
Tiny particles of light beginning to flow now inside the luminous pathway ascending and descending with the breath and awareness.
Feel the three points of light,
Very subtle.
Feel the third force of prana flowing together with the breath and the awareness.
Light flowing within a pathway of light,
Connecting to the two points of light in the inner space of your being.
Sometimes we see the light or we sense the light.
Sometimes we feel a vibration,
A sensation or we simply are aware of the presence.
There is a knowing.
It is there.
If thoughts come,
Simply return to the rotation.
If you are aware of the presence,
Simply return to the rotation.
At the end of the next rotation,
Let the awareness rest at the point of light in the region of the navel.
For a few moments,
Gazing up into the inner space at the luminous pathway,
Filtered with particles of light,
Of prana,
Connected to the point of light in the region of the throat.
Go on gazing,
Sensing,
Feeling this pathway,
This nadi.
It is the frontal pathway.
The breathing is natural.
And as you go on gazing,
See now that the pathway is moving into the space.
And begin to bring the attention back up now through the space of the being,
Coming all the way up through the space of the being to a point of light at the eyebrow centre,
Perceiving the frontal pathway and bringing the attention all the way up through the space of the being to the eyebrow centre.
And here see the steady point of light,
Luminous,
Shining,
Radiant at the eyebrow centre.
Feel the vibration,
The quality of this subtle light filling this whole region.
And as you gaze at the steady light,
Be aware of the effects of the practice,
Awakening the prana,
The light in the frontal pathway.
Have there been any effects?
What is the quality of the mind?
Is there a spaciousness,
An expansiveness?
What is the quality of the mind?
The quality of the consciousness?
More subtle than the mind is the consciousness.
Have there been any other effects on the prana,
The energy of the body?
Perhaps there is a feeling of lightness,
Enhancement through the whole pranic field,
Sensation,
Vibration.
Just observe.
And now the physical form,
The body.
How is the body after the practice?
Is it different?
Is it the same?
Notice any effects on the physical body.
Be aware of the stillness of the being,
The being as a whole unit.
And prepare to end this practice now.
Prepare to start externalizing the awareness so that there is a connection to the physical world,
The material world.
Begin by feeling the weight,
The physicality of the body sitting on the floor in the meditation posture.
Be aware of the room or the space in which you are sitting.
And have a mental image of the environment all around you,
Putting things in their place,
Becoming orientated with the space of the body and the space of the wider environment around you,
Listening to all of the sounds of the day,
Consciously taking a few deeper breaths in and out.
And then start to bring in some gentle movement,
Fingertips and toes,
Shrugging the shoulders up and down,
Making some circles,
Raising the chin up towards the sky and back down to the chest.
Starting to open the eyes,
Hurry on to step.
