Because mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention to the present moment on purpose and non-judgmentally,
We can even practice mindfulness as we eat.
Begin by cultivating the mood of discovery,
Discovering the smells and colors or shapes on your plate.
And then gather your attention with each new bite of food,
Noticing the texture and flavors of your food,
And even beginning to notice the way it feels to break down the food with each bite.
With each distracting sound or thought becoming a reminder to come back to the aroma and an opportunity to savor each bite.
You might even begin to notice the subtle sensations that come with the food moving through your throat,
Down through your esophagus,
And into your stomach.
See if you can become more intentional about the next bites,
And once again,
Anchor your awareness in the discovery of flavors and texture of your food.
Whenever you notice you've been lost in a thought,
Without judging yourself for having thoughts,
Notice what it feels like to interrupt the momentum of the thoughts and to also have the choice to come back to the present moment.
Invite your awareness to continue discovering the present moment through smells,
Colors,
Textures,
And subtle sensations of your body digesting your food.
Take a moment to feel into your body receiving,
Relishing,
And being nourished by your food.
These informal practices of mindfulness,
Allow us to carve out new neural pathways,
Each time we interrupt the momentum of a thoughts.
These micro mindfulness moments take us out of autopilot living and help us enjoy our lives more fully.
May you continue to feel nourished and recharged by your meal.
