Finding Calm in Chaos
by Lou Redmond
This meditation will help you relax and find your flow during times of change or stress.
Transcript
Let's begin to find our calm by first releasing any tension that is in the body.
So go ahead and roll your shoulders up and down your back.
Let me shake out and roll the wrists.
Take a big stretch up.
Reach up.
Your hands back down and roll your head back and forth.
Shake your head yes and shake your head no.
And now just giving any extra attention to any part of the body that may feel like it needs a little relaxation,
A little calmness.
And then when you feel like you've loosened up the body,
Go ahead and find yourself in your quiet space,
Resting your hands either by your side,
On your thigh.
Just allow yourself to feel the weight of your body on your chair,
Of your hands on your thighs,
Your body on your cushion,
Wherever you find yourself here today.
And go ahead and take a deep breath in,
Filling up the belly,
Expanding out through the chest.
And take one big sigh out.
One more time,
Breathing through the belly,
Breathing through the chest,
Sigh it out.
Soften the jaw.
Bring your shoulders down the back.
Allow the eyes to melt into the head and down into the heart.
And now just come back to the natural rhythm of the breath.
Feeling the air move through on your inhale,
Feeling it move down the body on your exhale.
Thinking about how being calm,
Being relaxed in your life may serve you today,
May help you navigate situations in your life in a greater conscious manner,
May help you deal with things that are stressing you out.
Whatever comes to mind,
Just take a moment and think about where this calm can be of use.
And maybe it's just finding the inner peace of this moment.
Really allowing yourself now to arrive here.
And I'd like you to breathe in calmness and breathe out anxiety.
Again,
Breathe in calming,
Beautiful energy.
Breathe out anxiety and anxious thoughts.
Breathe in positivity.
Breathe out negativity.
Breathe in hope.
Breathe out regret.
A few more.
With each release of the negative,
Unwanted energy,
Feel your body rooting even more grounded to your mat,
To your cushion,
To the floor or the chair.
Now,
As you breathe,
Begin to feel the moisture that is in the breath.
Feel this flowing energy of this water,
Although it may not seem like it.
If we bring our awareness to it,
We can feel the water in our breath,
Nourishing our body,
Which is mostly of that water.
And think about how this breath,
This water energy has been flowing since the beginning of time,
The beginning of our time here.
The water inside you has been like a wave in the ocean.
The breath has been the wave moving back and forward,
Crashing onto the shores.
Begin the natural rhythm of the breath as if you are a wave crashing on the beach,
Or maybe just gently moving back and moving forward.
Feel the ease of that rhythm.
Feel the flow.
Notice how this breath is always flowing,
Just like the wave in the ocean.
And over time,
These waves,
They can turn rocks into sand.
And just like us,
With a consistent practice,
With a consistent intention of good deeds,
Positive actions.
Each day when we come back to our breath,
Through the five,
Ten,
Fifteen,
Twenty,
However long we do it,
It's that perseverance that the breath of our life,
The wave of our life is turning all of those intentions into the things that we desire.
And that is how that we can make a difference in our lives.
From that peace and calm,
From that daily perseverance to become more whole,
To become more true to ourselves.
Take a few more breaths,
Just recognizing the power that comes with the natural flow of a wave,
The natural flow of our body.
Now imagining that you are this wave on the shore,
Begin to feel a warming energy of the sun that is above you.
Begin to notice where you feel it.
Is it on the forehead?
Is it down your back?
Where is this warming energy coming in as you flow up and down the shore?
With each natural rhythm of the breath,
Imagine yourself as the wave starting to evaporate up into the sky.
And as you do,
Imagine the droplets of water begin to form a cloud in the sky.
Imagine yourself sitting in this calm and peace,
In this cloud floating in the sky.
Think about the shape of your cloud,
The color,
Any little nuance that may represent who you are.
Feel the breeze move you through the sky and allow your cloud to change shapes.
Allow you to find the fluid movement from your breath on throughout the sky.
As you continue to move on,
The warm and cool air have combined.
And now you feel yourself beginning to take your journey back down to the earth,
But this time as just droplets of rain.
Beginning to nourish the earth,
Beginning to move into rivers and oceans.
To form the rivers that can carve through mountains.
Powerful,
Flowing energy.
Imagine representing that we can erode our challenges by taking small steps.
Feel this rain nourishing whatever you feel it needs to nourish on the ground.
Feeling the change that has just taken place.
From wave to cloud to rain and back down onto earth.
And now we have the ability to change within us,
To transform,
Take on different personas,
Take on different challenges.
And through it,
Although it may feel like it's causing us stress or anxiety or worry,
If we can just get into the flow of life that can only be accessed in this beautiful present state awareness.
Then we can face change with the certainty that it is and know that we must change,
We must flow or else we will become stagnant.
Our lives will feel heavy.
It will feel clouded.
Allow yourself now to release any last raindrops wherever they need to be.
Maybe you release them to a person.
You think of a person that could use some extra flow,
Some extra energy besides ourselves.
And now coming back to just that conscious inhale and exhale throughout the nose.
Breathing in calmness,
Breathing out anxiety,
Breathing in positivity,
Breathing out negativity,
Breathing in hope,
Breathing out any and all regret.
Take a few moments and repeat whatever is resonating with you,
Whether that be breathing positivity,
Breathing out anything that is negative.
And now allow yourself some quiet time.
Just another minute before we get back into our day to allow the thoughts to release.
If they want to come,
Let them come.
And just sit in this space of change,
Of calm,
And relax.
Now whenever you feel ready,
Begin to come back into your body.
Slowly open your eyes.
Come back to the space you're in.
Namaste.
