Hello everyone!
Welcome to my Self-Gentleness in Action monthly live.
I'm so happy to be here,
So happy to see you and today we are going to speak about decluttering.
Delicate decluttering is the topic of today and actually that is a topic that one of you guys asked me to speak about.
As you might know,
Here on InsideTimer I have this Self-Gentleness group where when I have a new track or something or I want to communicate something to you or you want to communicate something to me,
We can go there and we can chat and we can put links there to tracks of me,
Of those wonderful other InsideTimer teachers and there I asked some time ago,
I think it was the end of 2024,
What kind of topics would you like me to speak about?
Because when we look at Self-Gentleness,
Radically accepting yourself as the most important person to consistently deserve your own gentleness,
We know how it works,
Right?
We have the three steps tuning in,
Listening and acknowledging what is inside and then trying to honor that.
And that part,
The honoring of whatever it is that you need,
Whatever it is that you desire,
Whatever it is that is going on within you,
That is sometimes tricky.
It works well when we carve out time for ourselves,
When we have to deal with things that are easy,
Things that we are already fed up with not being Self-Gentle,
But then life happens,
Right?
And things happen and suddenly it's really really difficult to find that Self-Gentleness that just before you were so good at applying to your life.
And that is why I call these live Self-Gentleness in action,
Where we start to apply it to specific topics.
And before we go on into the delicate decluttering,
The topic of today that I've got from one of you guys,
And I'm sure that this person is not the only one,
I would love to know from you,
What is your biggest challenge when it comes to becoming Self-Gentle?
What is your biggest challenge to be Self-Gentle?
What kind of things in your life?
It might be big,
It might be small,
Don't worry,
I will accept everything,
There will be nothing,
Will be weird,
Just let me know.
So let me start by sharing my own personal thing in that.
For me,
I'm the master of Self-Gentleness,
Really.
And that is not because I'm Self-Gentle all the time,
No.
That is because I notice when I'm not and I know how to find my way back.
And sometimes just realizing that is enough to be back.
Sometimes topics are really hard and it takes me longer.
And of course there are those recurring topics that remain sometimes a bit of a challenge.
And that's okay,
Let's be gentle about that,
Let's be Self-Gentle about that.
Because becoming Self-Gentle is a lifelong work in progress process.
It's just like that.
You just get better and better and better at it.
And a lot of those topics that might be hard now,
Will be easier later on.
But you know,
We grow,
We evolve,
We meet new people,
We get new challenges,
We get to new phases in our lives.
And of course there will be new topics that will introduce some challenges to find the way back to that Self-Gentleness.
And there are lots of strategies for that.
And if you've been here already for some time,
And I know a lot of you are,
You know my strategies and we've been working on this.
But that is what I love about these monthly Self-Gentleness lives.

And I think that is something that we really really can use in this world.
People who are more gentle towards each other.
And it all starts by being gentle to yourself.
And of course if you're a gentle person who is already gentle to others.
Because there is the catch.
I know you might say well I'm always gentle to others but they're not gentle to me.
And because of that I cannot be gentle to myself.
That's another struggle.
And I know that one very well.
And I created a course for that.

But now I remember that I changed the title not so long ago.

I can just point you in a direction and remind you that you are just worthy as you are.
That you are so lovable just as you are.
That you don't have to do anything for that.
And when you start to remember that,
Because it's true,
It goes for everyone.
Yeah I know sometimes it's hard to believe but it goes for everyone.
And when every person for themselves start to recognize that,
Then that self-gentleness opens.

So I'm going to mention a few things that you guys wrote right.
Feeling I deserve to be self gentle to put myself before anyone else.
I think that's a struggle that is very recognizable also for me.
Especially when it comes to people that you feel responsible for,
Like your children or your parents or people in need or just because you love them right.
It's sometimes really really hard to also think of yourself and to put yourself first.
Because you know that when you put yourself first,
You take care of yourself first.
You will have so much more power and energy to be there also for others.
But yeah,
Kim says critical of myself.
Frank mentions a burnout years ago and that he's now continuously being very critical of whether what I do is smart enough.
Okay,
Oh that's interesting Frank.
So because you had a burnout and you realize what can cause that burnout,
That you're now really critical of what you do.
But would you say that you have become more self gentle or that you're also criticizing yourself for not following your rules that you have made up,
Created to not get in a burnout again?
I'm really curious if that nuance is there or this is just that burnout was like that was the moment and now you're becoming more self gentle.
Really curious to hear from you.
Luanne says I'm so hard on myself,
My own personal enemy.
I'm tired,
Sigh.
Oh Luanne and you know I think you're one of the most sweetest persons that I know.
So really don't be hard on yourself.
And for anyone thinking how do you know Luanne,
Well Luanne was with me in one of my workshops a few years ago.
So I know Luanne personally and we are in touch.
Perfectionism,
Yeah I know that one.
I'm a previous perfectionist which means I used to be perfectionist but I have to make sure that I don't go back to that perfectionism.
So you might relate to that,

So Jewel,
Hi Jewel,
She says,
Jewel says the internal struggle of actually thinking I'm worth that gentleness.
Yeah that's so familiar.
You're really not alone in that Jewel.
It's easy to be gentle for yourself when you're proud of yourself and something happens or someone gives you a compliment.
But what I want to practice here with the self gentleness in action is that you that you find your ways to be also gentle to yourself when you just you know you mess up.
You mess up.
I mess up.
We do things wrong.
We're not perfect.
We make mistakes.
Sometimes we do things that we are ashamed of but we are still worthy of our own love and gentleness.
But that's also not something that you can change you know like that like a magic trick and suddenly you're self-gentle.
It's a process,
Lifelong process.
But the beauty is when you start it you cannot undo it anymore.
When you start to tune in and to really listen to what is going on inside and you you realize what it is that you really want.
What it is that you really need.
You cannot undo that anymore.
When you create that sensitivity within yourself to be aware even if you cannot honor those needs yet right because that's the bigger and sometimes more challenging part of self gentleness.
That awareness cannot be taken away from you anymore.
And it is that awareness that will drive you to finding your ways to self gentleness.
So that is the beauty in it.
So I hope it will give you a sense of hope.
But the best thing is just start by tuning in and becoming aware.
So Lindsay inner critic Frank asks how can I make that change if I often don't even realize that I'm doing it.
Well that is the tuning in part.
So tuning in is the foundational practice of self gentleness.
That you allow yourself at least once a day and preferably more often.
And I'm not speaking about hours.
I'm just speaking about a minute here and there.
To really take a moment to tune in.
To feel and realize what it is that you don't want.
That's generally you can feel that.
And then try to feel what it is that you do need and do want.
And when you practice that on a daily basis like I just said you become more sensitive to whatever is going on there.
And that sensitivity or in other words awareness will bring you also the awareness that when you have that critical voice that is telling you oh you should not do this or that before you know it you will have again a burnout.
And in your specific case I can imagine that that voice that critical voice warning you that you might be doing too much is really one wanting to take care of you.
It's really reaching out to you saying we've been there don't go there again.
Be gentle to yourself.
And you might hear it as a critical voice but maybe when you tune in when you just sit maybe after a meditation and you just ask this voice so what is it that you would like me to do actually.
Maybe you can try to befriend that inner critic because it's not so much in a critic as a worried part of you that wants to take care of you and is worried that you might you know go overboard with certain things.
So that inner dialogue that awareness will help you becoming aware of when you're doing things and not.
And again you cannot do this wrong.
So yeah sometimes you might think oh I was not aware I was doing that I was doing it again.
So what?
This is a lifelong process.
You will become more gentle.
Be gentle also when you mess up being self gentle.
That's a paradox.
I know it.
I look in the mirror and I know it.
Yeah so all right let's see where was I.

Heather says self-doubt.
That's also you're not alone in that.
Yes perfectionism.
Dawn says overwhelmed the world,
The climate,
Pain being inflicted from our government here in the US.
Oh I can see that so much Dawn.
So there are a external forces going on that that are really hard to ignore.
And I recognize that a lot.
A few years ago I made a decision at a certain moment not to really stop taking in any news.
No television,
No newspapers,
Just not for some time.
And which is also you know I work at university as a political psychologist.
Most of my colleagues are political scientists who are on the news all the time.
So it was kind of a weird decision from their perspective.
But I needed that because the world and everything that was happening was overwhelming me then.
Actually still now sometimes also.
But then it was really really impacting how I was feeling also about myself.
Like I couldn't allow myself to feel good if the rest of the world was not feeling good.
But that's not a very self gentle basis because you cannot fix the whole world before you can allow yourself to feel good.
It has to be the other way around.
So I decided to stop watching any news,
Not reading newspapers.
And I had the premise that if something really important happened that I needed to know,
I would hear from people.
And then I could pick and choose in which source I wanted to know,
You know,
To look for more information.
And that was really really helpful for me to have a detachment of that.
And then I did it I think for two years or something.
Just looking up things when really you heard something that I wanted to know or felt obligation as a citizen to know.
But with measure and in a way that if I would feel unrest I would stop.
And that's basically what I still do.
I don't watch any news on a television.
That's really maybe once a year,
Twice a year.
For the rest I do read newspapers.
But I always check in what is doing to me.
And when it's overwhelming me or when it's hurting me or when I get too angry,
Which also can happen,
Then I just stop.
And I know that I will have to come back at a different moment when I will be better able to deal with that and to take care of myself.
Because the rule there when it is about the world,
It's important that you empower yourself to be who you are,
Which is worthy,
Which is lovable,
Which is love,
Which is someone who wants to love other people,
Who wants to be inclusive,
Who wants to make connections with other people.
And I know I might sound in these times a bit hippy-dippy or naive or Pollyanna.
But yeah,
I believe in that.
And I believe that those people that believe that too can empower themselves to feel just like that and spread that into the world.
And then I believe that more and more people will resonate with that.
Because in essence,
Most people want this.
In essence,
All people want this,
Even if they're not aware because they're so biased by their own experiences,
Life experiences,
Traumas,
Ego,
Whatever is going on.

When you push against things that you don't want,
It tends to get bigger and bigger.
Also,
When you think of energy,
When you use your energy to push against something that you don't want,
The energy goes into not wanting.
Well,
What I was just speaking about is putting this energy to yourself and allowing yourself to feel good and gentle,
Whatever is going on.
And it's sometimes hard that you really then empower yourself to have a different perspective,
To let go of the power that those others that might be hurtful have over you.
That is a really beautiful process that can start then.

The other day I reflected how much I've changed from putting my personal needs near the past.
In 2018,
I became very physically ill and needed to take excellent care of myself.
Because of that priority,
Excellent medical team,
Support from family and friends,
I'm wonderfully well.
Rest before you're tired is some of the best advice I ever had.
Oh,
I love that.
Rest before you are tired.
That's a really great one.
It's like the opposite of when I was really perfectionist,
I always said I will rest when I'm dead,
Right?
Terrible.
I would never tell myself that anymore.
But this is better.
Rest before you're tired.

So,
Let's start.
I started already.
But let's get a bit to the point.
So,
Delicate decluttering is basically about letting go.
And the truth is,
I'm not the best declutterer that there is.
I got better.
But for a very long time in my life,
I found it really,
Really hard to let go of things.
And I don't mean per se,
Things that are materialist.
But memories,
Little letters,
Things that someone gave me as a present that I was really never using.
But I felt that I could really do put it away,
Throw it away,
Give it away.
But I think in the process of becoming more self-gentle,
This is something that without consciously working on it,
It became more part of me.
So,
We will speak about that.
But in essence,
If you find it hard to let go of the things,
To declutter,
To not.
.
.
You know,
Not everybody might be a hoarder.
I do know hoarders in my life.
But even when you're not a hoarder,
It might be hard to let go of certain things.
And I think the first thing to accept that that is really,
Really human.
Letting go has a meaning for everyone personally.
Letting go means letting go of a part of yourself that you find it sometimes hard to let go of.
So,
For instance,
If you have beautiful childhood memories,
And then you have something from that time,
And you look at that,
And you remember those beautiful times when you were a child,
And you were afraid that when you throw this away,
You throw away those memories.
You throw away that part of you.
And I think one of the beautiful things that when people start to consciously declutter,
Is that by consciously taking steps,
Finding their own personal way of letting go of things,
They will also find a relief.
So,
I know someone,
So here in the Netherlands,
We have too many people and too little houses,
Or they're really,
Really expensive.
And that's already going on for decades.
So especially in Amsterdam,
What people can do is to live anti squat,
So that houses cannot be squatted.
And then for not so much money,
People can live in a house,
But they promise that the moment that there is a new renter,
Or it's going to be sold,
Or whatever the owner wants,
You will move out within a few days.
There are special agencies for that.
So I know someone who was living for that for many years,
Because they were not able to find an affordable house in Amsterdam.
And the consequence was that they had to move sometimes every three weeks,
Right?
So if you have to move every three weeks,
Or the threat of having to move every three weeks,
Really taught this person to be really good at letting go of things.
And that was kind of a skill that they acquired because of that,
Which is kind of really,
Really well done,
I think.
So let me just take like,
I cannot take a real poll here,

Letting go for me means letting go of holding back.

I have just moved from a large house into a tiny bedroom flat,
So I had to let go of my items and my past.
I did this to start a new life.
It was difficult,
But also cathartic.

I think that is also the hardest for me.
I have so many photos from not just my father,
But also from his parents where there are photos really from people that I never knew.
I don't even know who they are and it's not written anywhere,
But I still hold on to them.
Just like digital photos,
Like since we don't use film cameras anymore and we take way too many digital cameras,
Even when photos are not so nice,
I really find it hard to throw them out.
And so I have a lot of hard disk filled with photos that I never print and they're just there.
And I still plan to ever do something with that.
But that means a lot of decluttering.
So,

That's a real thing for me,
Too.

P says I really struggle to let go of things.
I have a lot of memories attached with items.
I'm struggling to move out of my condo into my new home.

I can imagine that.

Belongings of family members who have passed.

Absolutely.

Frank says more of old faraway friends or social things,
Not so much physical things.
Yeah.
So,

Letting go of social things.
Yeah,
I can see that might be also decluttering.
Right.
To to to pick what things to do,
Which people to see,
Which people not to see.
Yeah.
Oh,
I like that take.
That's also a great way.
Great way of seeing that.
Kim says I'm getting better,
But it's my parents stuff that seems difficult.
Someone reminded me that now my stuff and that helps.
Oh,
That's that's a great one,

Let me repeat that.
So Kim has stuff from her parents,
But now it's her stuff.
So she isn't charged because I do recognize that you have something from one of your parents.
You never look at it.
You don't really have an attachment.
Besides that,
You know it was important to them.
What do you do with it then?
Right.
So but now it's yours.
So it's up to you to decide what to do with it.
I also had this for a certain moment that so many artwork and drawings for my children from elementary school and and it was way too much that at a certain point I went through it and I decided just to pick the ones that I really loved or that gave me a memory and I put those in a in a book,
You know,
I just glued them in like an old photo book and then the rest and there were a few that I took pictures of and then the rest I let go and they don't even remember that they made those things but they're really appreciating that I do have a collection of some of their best artworks from when they were a kid.
So it is it is there is not one recipe for that because being self,
Pardon me,
Being self-gentle in that process also means that you have to find your unique way to to deal with that right.
So I see family photos for a lot of people,
Design clothes,
Yes yes I can see that.
I tend to create my small spaces and clutter them up so I'm never comfortable in them.
I don't know why I do this,
Yeah yeah.
So clothes,
Yeah so last summer I decided to go through all my clothes and I really had clothes from 30 years ago which I kept for a certain reason.
I took out what was really not nice anymore and that could be thrown away.
Then from the other clothes I asked my children if they might want something and because some of those things were you know hot and hip again so they liked it and then the rest I brought to,
I don't know the English word,
Well like a recycling place.
So yeah and it was kind of a relief because I kept all those clothes with the idea that I will once wear them but at a certain moment you will not wear them anymore because then I was 20 and now I'm in my 50s so things change right.
So cherry shares because it was cherry's topic.
When I was studying in Utrecht in five months I had to move three times but that was a student but now after 10 years living in this house I have to leave soon.
So I started decluttering but still progress after the death of my mom and 50 friends,
Their items and artwork.
I'm proud to have followed a photo course with five sessions learning to let go.
Absolutely.
Well I think cherry for you specifically it's really good that you're that you're taking as much time as you can because I know that I asked about a topic it was a few months ago and I see that you're already in this process but really as far as you can take your time and also remember that you can photograph certain things especially those things that might be too big to take with you or those things that you don't have that real attachment but you remember that your mom or one of your friends had an attachment to it that you could still take a picture and keep that and maybe make a collage of that or or a nice photo book later on something like that.
Yeah but it remains a difficult thing I can see that yeah so actually today's 11th of April which is the birthday of my father who died already many years ago when he was very young he was 48 today he would have become 81 so it's already a long time ago that he died but I yeah I still have some things that I took from his house that I carried with me that are with me but that I actually really never used there is this ship's clock from a family where there was a lot of sailors and we have a ship's clock it was always hanging in in the kitchen and I started to use it for some time but the thing is you have to wind it every time and I I'm not a winding person I noticed and then it's also it's giving every half an hour it's making a sound because it's the ship's clock and it and when you are the ship you know you have your shifts and the shifts are counted down by the many times that the clock is is making a special sound I in Dutch it's called glasses I'm not sure if it's the same in English so yeah but I still have it and then sometimes when I start to make order I find a clock and then I put it again somewhere yeah these things but then on the other hand I might also decide to to maybe sell it to someone who would be really happy to it or give it as a present to someone who might be really happy with it so we all have those things that are hard to let go of and those things that it's it's I also think there is a time of letting go of things so when you want to connect self gentleness to this so you can go all what is Marie Kondo and you know have this really rigorous decluttering but I don't believe so much in that because then you put some rules on discipline upon yourself that you have to let go of things even though it might really give you a good feeling afterwards if it's if you have to push through is this resistance too much you're not helping yourself it's not so gentle so my self gentle approach for every one of you who want to let go of things is to to first tune in with yourself foundational practice and then really ask yourself what is the meaning of this photo or this token or this subject subject or the thing that you cannot let go what is the meaning for you and then you can ask if this the meaning that it has that first of all do you need to have this physically with you to be aware of that meaning or can you also remember this still keep the meaning and let go or might a photo do and if the answer is well there is a meaning and this meaning is really really important for me then keep it and maybe put it in a special box and then you decided in a year you will check in again because in a year so many things happen with us that you might have changed your mind by then I think that might be really really self gentle process that you you tune in and you relate to every topic because sometimes we can rationally think that we have to let something go that's our hearts or our old childhood wounds are not completely ready to let go of right so and sometimes so I don't believe in pushing through I don't believe in pushing through resistance I don't believe in being tough on yourself because you think that you have to let go of something however if you're in a situation where you're moving house and you have to let go of things and sometimes you can also get in a flow that will help you with that okay you know what I will do I will guide you now in a visualization where we will work with letting go of things and then you can work on those things that you really would like to let go of so before we start just think of one thing or two things that you know you know you could let go for whatever reason or you want to let go of can also be that you know you broke up in a relationship and you really hold on to certain things of that relationship while you also went on and you know that those times are in your past in your memory and it would be also relief to let go of these things but it might be still hard then you know that might be a good thing to work with okay Kami thank you so much for that for that offer let's see okay that's beautiful so Kami if you're a professional organizer what would be your tip your number one tip to self gently radically accepting yourself as the most important person to consistently deserve your own gentleness what would be your first number one tip for people to self gently let go of things I'm really curious if you would share that with us and I will guide it in a meditation and then by the end I will come back and we will take a look at that right okay so let's sit comfortable really make yourself comfortable make it easy for yourself you can lean against the back of your chair you can lie on a mattress or on the floor you can walk around whatever feels good to you so for a moment just feel how you are sitting or lying feel your feet touch the ground your buttocks on the seat and your back against the back of the chair or on the mattress if you're lying down now gently close your eyes now feel for a moment if there's any tension in your body and if there is just bring your attention there you can make the tension a little bit bigger and then let go so if the tension is in your shoulders just just pull them up and let them go if the tension is in your face you make a lemon face and let go if you notice that you're pulling in your
