Your energy works almost exactly like a bank account.
Every morning,
A certain amount gets paid in,
And all day long things withdraw from it.
And here is what almost nobody realizes.
You are not exhausted because of the total amount you do.
You are exhausted because of a small number of specific things that are quietly draining the account and you cannot see them happening.
If I could hand you your energy statement,
The way your bank shows you exactly where your money went,
You would be shocked.
Most of your day barely costs you a thing.
And a few specific things are taking almost all of it so give me the next 15 minutes and by the end of this video you will know three things exactly what is draining your energy how to find your own biggest drains in one week and what to do about each one so you can finally stop being exhausted for reasons you cannot explain Now I have had to understand this better than most because I have lived with chronic fatigue my whole life.
I never had energy to spare,
So I could not afford to guess at what was draining me.
I had to find it exactly,
The specific task,
The specific hour,
Or I could not function.
This whole method came out of 20 years of doing that,
And it is what I teach now.
My courses have reached more than 35,
000 people on Insight Timer,
The world's leading wellness app where I publish under the name Hélène Mouton.
And I have helped nearly 3,
000 people with their exhaustion.
I want the same for you.
For years I thought I was simply a tired person,
That it was just who I am.
Then I learned to catch what was actually draining me and almost all of it turned out to be invisible.
Physical tiredness you can feel,
Your body is heavy,
Your legs ache,
You know it.
But the things that take the most from a person today are completely silent.
So let me show you the five biggest ones because you cannot catch what you are not looking for.
The first is decisions.
Every choice you make,
From the big ones down to what to reply to and what to eat,
Takes a small amount of mental energy.
You do not feel any single decision cost you a thing,
But make 300 of them by the middle of the afternoon and you are empty.
And you have no idea why,
Because not one of them felt like anything.
The second is dread,
And this is a big one that almost nobody counts.
The task you are dreading drains you four hours before you ever do it.
A difficult call at four in the afternoon is quietly taking your energy from nine in the morning in the background all day.
Researchers call this anticipatory stress,
And they have found that bracing for something taxes you almost as much as the thing itself.
So a single dreaded task can flatten an entire day,
Even though the task itself takes 20 minutes.
The third is switching.
Every time you jump from one thing to another,
A message,
A notification,
A quick question,
Part of your attention stays behind on what you just left.
Researchers call this attention residue and they've measured that it takes on average about 23 minutes to get fully back into a task after one interruption.
So a day of consistent switching is a day spent at half power.
And it is exhausting in a way you cannot see because on paper you were only answering messages.
The fourth is emotional labor,
Holding it together,
Staying pleasant when you don't feel like it,
Managing everyone else's mood,
Being the steady one,
That is real work,
It runs off a real reserve and it empties quietly,
Especially if you are the person everyone leans on.
And the fifth is sensory load.
Screens,
Noise,
Notifications,
Bright light,
Hour after hour,
Your brain has to process every piece of it and it drains you even while you are sitting perfectly still.
Every one of these is invisible while it happens.
You cannot feel them adding up through the day,
Which is the whole reason you have to get them onto paper to catch them.
And this is the method.
So here it is and it is simple to do.
For one week,
You track your energy,
Not your time.
Most people track their to-do list,
Everything they have to get through.
You are going to track the opposite,
What each part of the day takes out of you.
Break your day into its natural blocks.
The morning routine,
The commute.
The first work session,
The big meeting,
Lunch,
The afternoon,
The evening with the family.
After each block,
Do one quick thing.
Give it a number from 0 to 10 and how drained you feel.
0 means full of energy,
10 means completely empty.
And write one or two words next to it for what that block actually was.
Back to back meetings,
School run,
That one client.
10 seconds after each block.
You are not analyzing anything yet.
You are just collecting it and you have to write it down because your memory of your own energy is unreliable.
By the evening,
You cannot remember that the 9 o'clock meeting left you at a 7 out of 10 drained.
You just feel tired and you blame the whole day or worse,
You blame yourself.
The numbers will not let you do that.
They pin it to the exact block that did the damage and you do it for a full week not a day because what you are looking for is what repeats A Tuesday that flattens you every single week is a pattern you can fix.
A one-off rough day is just a rough day.
Only a full week tells the two apart.
Now,
When you look back over your week,
You are hunting for three specific kinds of drain,
Because almost everyone you have falls into one of them.
The first is people.
There is very often one person,
Sometimes two,
Whose name ends up sitting next to your worst numbers again and again.
A client who leaves you flat every single time.
A colleague whose message is,
Opening,
A relationship that takes and gives nothing back.
You do not have to cut anyone out of your life to benefit from this.
You just have to see them clearly.
Because you cannot manage a drawing,
You are pretending it's not there.
The second is tasks.
There will be specific tasks that score high every time you do them.
And here is the interesting part.
It is usually not the hardest task.
It is the one you dread or the one that forces you to switch constantly.
Or the one you always end up doing at the worst hour of your day.
The admin you leave until 5 in the afternoon when you have nothing left.
The kind of work that simply does not suit the way your brain is built.
The third is patterns and these are the ones people miss the most because a pattern is not a thing you can point at.
It is a shape in your day.
Meetings booked back to back with no gap to breathe.
Reaching for your phone the second you open your eyes.
No real gap between shutting the laptop and being present with your family,
Being reachable every waking hour.
None of these feel like events,
So you never blame them.
But your numbers will show you in black and white that the days built this way are your worst days,
Even single time.
So now you have your drawings named and written down.
Here is what you do with each one.
And there are only three moves.
You cut it,
You change it or you move it.
Cut it.
Some drains can simply go.
The recurring meeting you sit in that you do not need to be in.
The notifications you can switch off completely.
The commitment you keep out of guilt that gives you nothing back.
When a drawing scores high and it is genuinely not essential,
The answer is to remove it and you will be surprised how many of yours fall into that box the moment you can actually see them.
Change it.
Some drains cannot go,
But they can be made much lighter.
The difficult client stays,
But you change how you handle them.
Fewer live calls.
Clearer boundaries.
Replies in set batches instead of the second that they message.
The task you dread stays,
But you break it into smaller pieces or hand part or all of it to someone else.
You are not removing the drain,
You are lowering the price you pay for it.
And move it.
This is the one almost nobody thinks of.
Some things are only draining because of when you do them.
Hard focus work in your afternoon low is exhausting.
That same work in your sharpest morning window is completely manageable.
So you do not cut the task and you do not change it.
You move it to the hour where you actually have the energy for it.
A huge amount of what exhausts people.
Is not the work itself,
It is the right work done at the wrong time.
Now your week of numbers will answer one more question and it is the most important of all.
Whether what you are in is a hard patch or actual burnout.
From the inside,
They feel identical,
But they are not the same thing and they need opposite responses.
Here is how you tell them apart.
A hard patch is tied to a cause.
A big launch,
A genuinely hard few weeks,
A crisis at home.
And the defining feature of a hard patch is that when the cause passes,
Your energy comes back.
Good weekend and you feel human again.
Burnout does not do that.
Burnout is when your reserves have been run so low for so long that rest stops refilling them.
The cause passes.
The weekend comes and goes and you are still empty on Monday morning.
That is the line between the two.
So look at your week and then look back over the last few months.
If a proper break still leaves you drained,
If you have felt this way no matter what was or was not going on,
Then this is not a rough patch you will bounce back from on your own.
That is burnout building and it needs real recovery,
Not just waiting for things to quieten down.
Knowing which one you are in tells you whether to ride it out or to change something now.
That answer alone is worth the week it takes to find it.
So let me bring it together.
Your exhaustion is not a fog,
It is not a flow in you.
It is a small number of specific drains,
A few people,
A few tasks,
A few patterns,
Most of which you cannot feel while they happen.
Track your energy for a week and you can finally see them.
Then you cut them,
You change them,
Or you move them.
And along the way,
You find out whether you are simply tired or genuinely burning out.
And here is what that gives you.
When you can see exactly what is taking your energy,
You stop being at the mercy of your own exhaustion and you start managing it like something you can actually control.
Which means you get to keep building the work and the life you care about without it quietly costing you your health.
Now,
Doing this on your own takes a week and a bit of honesty.
If you have been exhausted for years and never known exactly why,
This is the fastest place to get your answer.
So do not wait for the perfect moment.
Start tonight.
After each block of tomorrow,
Give it a number and a word or two.
By this time next week,
You will be looking at the real reasons you are exhausted.
Instead of guessing.
See exactly what is taking your energy and for the first time you can take it back.
I will see you in the next one.
