Find a comfortable and steady seat for your meditation.
Draw the flesh away from the sitz bones and tip the pelvis a little forward.
And root down with some commitment to your connection with the earth.
And as you root down,
Feel there's an exchange of energy,
A lifting upward through the spine.
And the crown can extend up towards the sky.
Begin to breathe consciously through your nose.
Finding a rhythm that's comfortable for you for your meditation.
Please do not strain,
Trying to take a longer,
Deeper breath.
Just a nice even rhythm where the inhale and exhale are equal and you're breathing through the nose.
As you root down and you feel the spine is straight and tall with the eyes closed,
Breathe through your nose with great awareness at the nostrils.
As you inhale,
You can feel the air coming through as you draw the breath in.
And as you exhale,
You can feel the warmth of the breath leaving through the nostrils.
As you release,
Keeping your attention at the nostrils and then maybe just towards the tip of the nose,
The eyes can be closed or half open.
Allow your roots from your sitz bones to go down into the earth and then outward,
Extending wide like a redwood tree.
And as you root down,
Feel your trunk,
Your spine is straight and is striving for the sunlight,
The crown of your head extending upward.
With the root chakra,
We're working on our own stability but also a sense of belonging and belonging to the earth.
We are the earth.
The earth is us.
As we grow stronger in ourself,
We can uplift others,
Bring others with us towards the light.
As you begin to settle into your meditation,
You can visualize your body as a tree,
Roots going down and out into the earth,
The trunk,
The length of your spine,
The branches extending out from the crown of your head as your aura,
Your energy field.
You can think of your aura as the canopy of the tree.
It is said the canopy of a tree is as big as the roots go deep and wide.
Feel that relationship.
Still breathing in,
Feeling the breath across the nostrils and breathing out,
Feeling the breath leave through the nose.
The sense of smell is related to the root chakra for survival.
This is our instinctual nature.
The sense of smell can protect us.
When there's a fire,
We first might smell smoke before we see anything.
So the sense of smell is a warning for us in many instances.
Smell can also bring delight,
Of course,
But at the root,
It is about survival.
As you breathe through your nose,
You are training the mind to focus on the sense of smell.
For the rest of your meditation,
Breathing in through the nose,
You can say,
I am aware,
I am breathing in and breathing out through the nose.
I am aware,
I am breathing out.
And just bringing your awareness to this one point for the next minute or two.
Breathing in,
I can sense a smell.
Breathing out,
I release.
Breathing in,
I smell.
And breathing out,
I let it go.
Feel that you are steady in yourself,
That when you are still,
You can awaken your instinctual nature for self-protection,
But also to help others as the redwood tree does,
As it reaches its roots outward to other trees,
To keep them steady so they can survive the strong winds.
Feel that you can trust yourself.
Feel there is an unshakable quality of groundedness within.
This is your embodiment of the earth element.
