A short, guided meditation softly encouraging the attention to settle in the body. We, Westerners, spend so much of our time in our heads or escaping our current experience. This gentle practice helps to build the skill of staying with our experience through attention in the body (regardless of what experience may bring).

As we begin,

Gently bring your attention into your body,

Feeling how your body feels in whatever position it's in at this moment.

Feeling any points of contact with the surfaces that are supporting the body,

And if you're seated,

Perhaps feeling the uprightness of your spine,

Perhaps feeling the air around the body,

A sense of the space that the body is currently in,

And if you need to make any adjustments to feel slightly more comfortable or alert,

Gently do so.

And when you feel settled,

Bring a sense of the attention into the body.

You may feel the body as a generalized sensation rather than focusing on a specific part of the body.

You may feel an answer to the question,

How do you know that you have a body?

Feeling the answer to this question may help the attention rest in the body,

And as the attention escapes,

As it will,

Softly bring it back to the body.

If the attention gets captured by the mind,

It may feel like it's slightly above or away from the body,

And gently pull it back into the grounded sensation of staying with the body.

Sometimes it's helpful to feel the sensations at the points of contact with the body and any surfaces that the body is touching,

As a place to come back to anchor the attention in feeling the body.

How can the attention stay with the body?

Each time the attention drifts away,

Gently bringing it back to feeling the body.

What do you feel right now that lets you know that you have a body?

You you you Feeling your body.

The attention drifting away from the body is as natural as bringing it back,

Gently encouraging the attention to stay with the body,

To stay with the sensation and feeling of having a body.

Feeling the whole body all at once,

Deeply feeling the sensation of being in your body right now.

And if your eyes have been closed,

I'll invite you to gently open them in a moment,

And as you do,

Or if your eyes have been open this whole time,

I invite you to continue to feel the sensation of feeling your body while allowing insight and imagining what it would feel like to go forth into the rest of your day or evening.

Checking in and feeling this sensation of having a body from time to time for a second here and a second there as you go about your day.

If you have not already,

You can gently open your eyes as you feel inclined and bring forth the feeling of sensing your body into the rest of your day.
