Begin by coming into a comfortable position for your body where your spine can be aligned with itself from its base in your pelvis to the very top of your head.

For this type of meditation,

I prefer a seated posture with my spine tall and stacked upright,

But feel free to lie down if that's what's most comfortable for you today.

When your spine is comfortably aligned,

Slowly invite a sense of stillness into your body and begin to soften your gaze or close your eyelids.

We'll open this meditation with three intentional breaths together,

Awakening energy along the spine.

We'll start with a deep inhale through the nose,

Slowly drawing energy upwards from your pelvis along the spine with the breath,

And a slow and steady exhale,

Releasing that energy back down the length of the spine and into the earth.

Again,

This time imagining you're pulling energy up from the earth beneath you,

Drawing it up the spine with the breath,

Filling the lungs,

And exhaling that energy down the spine and perhaps feeling the weight of your body sink deeper into your seat or into the floor.

Once more,

Inhaling energy from the earth beneath you,

Drawing it up your body and even up into or even up and out of the top of your head,

And then a slow release of the breath,

Body relaxed and heavy with a sensation of letting go.

Relax your breathing,

Taking a moment to allow it to come into a natural rhythm.

When you're ready,

Gently draw your attention to Mooladhara chakra at the very bottom of your spine,

The tip of your tailbone.

And with your awareness here in your body,

Imagine the color red.

Mooladhara houses the energy of stability,

Security,

And of our basic needs.

This is where belonging,

A sense of home within ourselves and in our connection with the earth exists inside of us.

What feeds and satiates us.

Begin to relax and release any tension in your glute muscles,

Your thighs,

Soften your knees,

Calves,

Ankles,

And feet.

Become heavy in your lower body.

Now begin to direct your breath to the bottom of your spine and with each inhale,

Imagine the color red becoming more vibrant.

And as you continue to breathe here,

The color red begins to expand to envelop the legs and lower body and might even reach down like roots into the earth beneath you.

Gently and mindfully drawing your awareness up the spine now to Svaristana chakra at the sacrum or the low back,

Deep within the pelvic bowl.

And with your awareness here in your body,

Imagine the color orange.

Svaristana houses the energy of our emotions,

Of our sexuality and our sensuality and also of our unconscious desires.

Like its ruling element water,

The energy of our emotions are often quite fluid and ever-changing.

Begin to relax the weight of your pelvis down into the surface beneath you.

Release any tension in the hip flexors and in the low back.

Begin to direct your breath to this area and with each inhale,

The color orange might become more vibrant.

And as you continue to breathe here,

Imagine the color orange begins to expand to completely fill your pelvic bowl.

Gently drawing your attention up the spine now to Manipura chakra behind the navel in the area between your belly button and the bottom of your rib cage.

And with your awareness here in your body,

Imagine the color yellow,

Often called the solar plexus chakra.

Manipura is a power center,

Housing the energy of our willpower,

Assertiveness and attachment to the material world,

Such as work,

Money and social identity.

It is also the place that is said to hold our fear.

Ruled by fire,

Manipura is a powerful manifester and transformer of these energies.

Begin to relax and release any tension you might be holding in your torso and in your belly.

Perhaps allowing your belly to even spill forward and down.

Begin to direct your breath into your soft belly and with each inhale,

Maybe the color yellow becomes more vibrant.

And as you continue to breathe into this space,

Imagine the color yellow begins to expand and completely fill the belly.

Gently drawing your attention up the spine now to Anahata chakra in the area along the spine behind the heart at the center of the chest.

And with awareness here in your body,

Imagine the color green.

Anahata houses the energy of love and compassion for self and others,

Of tenderness,

Balance and calm.

It transforms the energies of the lower three chakras connected to the earth and the material to create a bridge to the upper three chakras,

Which connect us to something larger,

Perhaps a sacred and fundamental truth connecting everything.

Begin to relax the muscles in your chest and your shoulders.

Allow your arms to hang heavy by your sides,

Directing your breath into your heart space.

With each inhale,

Maybe the color green becomes more vibrant.

And as you breathe here,

Imagine the color green expanding to completely fill the chest and upper back and perhaps even flows down your arms and into your palms.

Gently drawing your attention again up the spine to Vishuddha chakra at the back of the neck behind the throat.

And with your awareness here in your body,

Imagine the color blue.

Vishuddha houses the energy of our expression with communication,

Both verbal and nonverbal.

It translates to purification and is ruled by the element ether,

Recognized as pure consciousness,

The beginning of all things.

Begin to relax the muscles in your neck and in your jaw.

Allow your tongue to be soft and fill the mouth,

Lightly pressing at the roof.

Now direct your breath to the area of your throat.

And with each inhale,

Maybe the color blue becomes more vibrant.

And as you continue to breathe here,

Imagine the color blue expanding to completely fill your neck,

Your jaw and your mouth.

Gently drawing your attention upward now to Ajna chakra at the center of the head.

You might envision a line drawn across connecting the tops of your ears and then another line from the center of the forehead straight to the back of your head.

And where these two lines cross is approximately the center of your head.

And with your awareness here in your body,

Or if that seems complicated,

Perhaps bringing awareness to the space between your eyes,

Imagine the color indigo,

A deep mixture of blue and purple.

Ajna chakra is often called the third eye and in connection with its Sanskrit translation is known as the command center,

Housing the energies of clear seeing and clairvoyant abilities.

It connects us to our intuition,

Our innate and internal knowing and begin to relax the muscles of your brow and the tops of your ears and begin to direct your breath into the area of your brow or the center of your head.

And with each inhale,

Maybe the color indigo becomes more vibrant.

And as you continue to breathe here,

Imagine the color indigo expands to completely fill the top half of your skull.

Gently drawing your attention upwards now to sahasrara chakra at the very top of your head.

And with your awareness here,

Imagine a purple lotus flower resting gently on the top of your head.

Also called the crown chakra.

It is represented as an image of a 1000 petaled lotus and said to be the seat of the self or the witness.

This is the meeting point between the physical body and the soul or the universe where the finite meets the infinite.

And begin to relax the muscles in your scalp and direct your breath into the very top of your head.

And with each inhale,

Perhaps the color purple becomes more vibrant.

And as you continue to breathe here,

Imagine the color purple expanding to completely cover the top of your head and perhaps even begin to extend into the space beyond and above your head.

And as we come to close this meditation,

We'll inhale deeply together,

Drawing energy up from the earth beneath you,

Sending that energy through the spectrum of light you've created along your body.

Drawing the energy up and out of the top of your head and then slowly exhaling that energy back down,

Connecting the divine above and the earth below through your body.

Just like that in your own time,

Drawing energy up from the earth and out of the top of your head and back down as you pass through each energy center.
