The second-morning meditation from a retreat based on the view that we all have a natural goodness and wisdom within – ’Buddha Nature’ – which can be thought of as like an inner light. It is explored through posture, kindly awareness to the body, and freeing up the heart so it can naturally shine outwards. Plenty of silent spaces and a longer unled period towards the end. Transcript

Good morning everyone.

So in this practice we're again going to be connecting with a posture,

With a breathing body and with a heart.

And all with this theme of trusting the power of the luminous mind and bringing this precious gift of kindly awareness to our own experience,

Seeing and feeling the transformative effect of that.

So there'll again be a period towards the end that's unled.

I'm going to start with a quote from Shinjo Ito.

What is most important is to go deep into ourselves and discover the loving kindness and compassion of the Buddha within,

The awakened nature we all possess.

So as we settle into our posture,

Can our posture itself express a confidence in our own light?

What would it look like and feel like to sit as one who knows that their heart mind is luminous,

Limitless?

Sit knowing that there's Buddha nature here.

We can trust that.

There's no need to force anything.

And letting the earth be a witness,

A support to our light,

Feeling its quiet solid presence under us.

This peaceful earth spreading out under us,

Feeling how it's stable,

Solid,

Feeling the contact with the earth and maybe breathing in to those points of contact through whatever we're sitting or lying on.

Fully receiving that contact.

Fully receiving that contact.

Can that contact be like a gentle embrace,

A holding of our whole being,

Reassuring,

Soothing,

Letting all parts of us know that we're safe right now?

We can let go.

Fully receiving that contact.

Fully receiving that contact.

Fully receiving that contact.

And now we're going to scan through the body with a kindly awareness.

And maybe breathing in to each part of the body as if through the pores of the skin.

And noticing places of tension and tightness.

But no need to try and relax that tension.

Just trusting in the power of awareness.

And letting the awareness naturally do its work.

The beauty of kindly awareness.

Illuminating,

Colouring,

Transforming the experience of the body.

So bringing a kindly awareness to our feet and hands.

Maybe breathing in to feet and hands.

And allowing a kind awareness to meet the sensations in the arms and the legs.

Sensing,

Listening to the aliveness there.

Letting the sensations come close.

Letting me fully felt.

And letting the sensations come close.

Aware of the buttocks.

Aware of the pelvic floor.

The genitals.

And where there's tension.

Noticing what happens when it's met with this kind,

Sensitive attention.

How does it respond to being received,

Being listened to with kindness?

And sensitive to the whole front of the torso.

The belly.

The solar plexus.

The heart area.

The collarbones.

The chest area.

And bringing kindly awareness to the whole of the back.

The bottom of the spine,

Tailbone.

Whole of the lower back.

The mid back.

The upper back and shoulders.

The lower back.

The upper back.

Sensitive to the neck,

Front and back.

To the head.

Sensations of the skull.

Weight of the head.

And bringing awareness to the face.

Face,

Temples.

The mouth and the jaw and throat.

Allowing the throat to rest.

And now sensitive to the whole breathing body.

The lower back.

The upper back.

The jaw.

And feeling the infinite power of this awareness.

Infinitely sensitive.

Feeling how our sensitivity to the whole body can go deeper and deeper.

Further and further.

Unlimited.

Unbounded.

Light.

Unbounded.

And feeling the kindness in that sensitivity.

In that infinitely sensitive listening.

And seeing,

Feeling,

Imagining that kindness as light.

Clear,

Radiant,

Beautiful.

Slowly drawing back the curtain and allowing that light of kindness to radiate.

So releasing the heart.

Letting the heart radiate.

Do what it naturally wants to do.

So letting that light of the heart radiate outwards from the front of the body.

And radiating from the whole back of the body.

And radiating downwards into the earth.

And radiating downwards into the earth.

And radiating upwards into space.

This heart radiating upwards,

Outwards and unbounded.

And maybe a sense of it touching all life.

All people.

All kinds of beings.

The whole amazing,

Glorious web of life.

So that is the thing to keep on representing,

�az�ing through more awareness and creativity.

An unlimited reach,

No limits in space or time.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

Touching all of life in the past and in the future.

So as we come in a few minutes to the end of the sit,

Maybe feeling again the quiet earth under us.

Feeling the rise and fall of the lower belly as we breathe.

And sensitive to how our heart feels in this moment,

To how we're doing.

So as we come in a few minutes to the end of the sit,

Maybe feeling again the quiet earth under us.

And seeing if we can keep remembering during our day that our heart-mind is precious,

Magical,

Unlimited.

And our kind attention,

Kindly awareness is a precious gift,

Powerfully transformative.

Much gratitude. It's getting very hard to find spacious and background sound free meditations on Insight Timer, so this is a gem. For unlimited, I prefer to use unbounded, it's closer to my actual experience. Unlimited suggests space to me, but unbounded more a freedom from the confines of concepts like space.
