Spiritual practice does not require us to be in any particular condition. Were practice about creating some state or another through effort, we would at times experience difficulty. What a shame it would be for practice to depend upon our being a certain way! The experience of being human manifests in many, many ways. Let's rely upon a practice that's possible in all these ways, so that we can always depend upon it, no matter what. [Photo by Mads Schmidt Rasmussen on Unsplash]

Spiritual practice does not require you to be in any particular condition.

Conditions are dependently arisen.

Symptoms of causes.

They are not you,

Since they can be observed.

If something is observable,

It is object.

When there is an object,

You are subject.

If you then take the sensations that make up the subject,

And observe those,

Then they,

In turn,

Become object.

Where are you now?

Perhaps there is some new set of sensations that make up the subject.

Now these are object.

Do this enough,

And subject-object relativity dissolves.

Everything is realized as pure awareness.

This does not require you to be any particular way,

Since any way you might be is just a set of sensations that can be observed.

This does not require the intellect.

It does not require energy.

It does not require a certain level of realization.

It does not require that you have taken refuge.

It does not require that you have been practicing for a long time.

It does not require that your mind is clear.

It does not even require that you understand what I'm talking about,

Since it could,

Potentially,

Be discovered completely by accident.

That which I am talking about has been expressed as the phrase,

It has been expressed as anatta,

No self.

It has been expressed as the essence of any non-dual teaching.

Right now,

I am fatigued.

I did not sleep very much.

Were my practice about creating some state or another through effort,

I would experience difficulty.

What a shame that would be.

What a shame it would be for practice to depend upon being a certain way.

The experience of being human manifests in many,

Many ways.

I want my practice to be possible in all these ways,

So that I can always depend upon my practice,

No matter what arises.

Old age,

Sickness,

And death will come.

When they do,

I will practice,

Just as I practiced when young and healthy.

No need to do anything differently.

No need to do anything at all.

Just rest.

Rest in the marvelous experience of self-awareness.

See all that arises as impersonal phenomena.

No need to think or feel or do anything about it.

Accept whatever is going on right now,

Including your thoughts,

Feelings,

And doings,

Exactly as it is.

No need to change anything,

Not even the most adverse of circumstances,

For they all pass on their own.

This does not mean we should ignore oncoming traffic,

Only that we move out of its way through naturally occurring wisdom.

No need to worry that a bus will smash through the living room wall.

No need to worry that afflictive states will arise in the future.

Just see that what is arising now is arising in and as awareness,

Not separate from awareness.

Watch it arise and pass away.

Arise and pass away.

Arise and pass away.

Everything that can be perceived follows this pattern.

So what is there to do about it?

What need is there for striving?

Nowhere to go,

Nothing to do.

Spring comes,

And the grass grows by itself.
