Needs and wants are something that we think about and ponder endlessly, but if we don't put those thoughts into action how can we expect our needs and wants to be fulfilled? This session leads you through the consideration of your needs and wants, and how holding them in often leads to disappointment and unfulfilled expectations.

Welcome to your session today.

My name is Shanna Moyer and I have the honor of leading you through this exploration,

This session designed to examine your needs and wants and your expectations of both of those things.

Before we get started and get grounded and settled into your space,

I invite you to get a piece of paper or a journal and something to write with.

As we consider our needs and our wants,

I want you to have a safe space where you can physically write down what those things are,

Validate them as a real thing instead of just thinking about them.

We spend a lot of time thinking about our needs and our wants,

But do we spend as much time or put as much emphasis on expressing them?

When we don't express our needs and our wants,

When we don't communicate those things with the world around us,

That leads us to failed expectations and disappointment.

So get yourself prepared,

Journal,

Piece of paper,

Something to write with,

And then set yourself up in a comfortable seat.

Take a moment to get settled into your body with your breath.

And when it feels comfortable and right and safe for you,

I invite you to close the windows of your eyes,

Simply breathing down into your body one breath at a time,

Getting grounded and getting centered.

And during your session today,

Knowing that you have full permission to pause the recording,

Take your journal or your paper and write down as much as freely and as completely as you need to.

Yes,

This is meditation,

But is also an active exploration of your needs and your wants.

On your next inhalation,

I invite you to start considering what your needs are,

Your fundamental needs,

And not necessarily the ones that you would automatically think of.

I need food in my belly,

A roof over my head,

Clothing on my body.

Yes,

Of course.

But are there needs,

Emotional or mental wellbeing needs that you require to be met so that you can be happy,

You can be healthy,

And you can feel whole at the end of the day?

What are your needs?

What are the things that you need to happen or the things that you require so that you can feel good,

So that you can feel okay,

So that you can be present and an active participant in your life?

What are the things that you need?

These are things that support.

These are things that uphold.

These are things that give you that life sustaining energy.

What are the things that you need?

As you consider them and they start popping up in your mind,

I invite you to write them down,

Whether it's with eyes open or eyes closed.

Make a list,

Single words or phrases.

What do you need?

Now when that feels complete,

Starting to consider what do you want?

Wants and desires are so important.

They are the things that keep us pushing through life,

Pushing past circumstance through challenges.

They are the things that we crave at the end of the day.

The want for connection,

The want and desire for deep and meaningful,

Passionate love.

They support our goals and they lead us into a greater state of being.

So please,

For a moment,

Consider what do you want?

What are those burning desires that light you up from the inside out?

What do you want?

Write it down.

See it in your own handwriting.

Validate these wants as things of importance.

It is not enough to just think about them,

But we need to put those wants and desires out into the world.

When that feels complete for you,

Starting to consider your expectation of both your needs and your wants.

And how maybe in the past,

By not expressing your needs and your wants,

It has led you to failed expectations and disappointment.

This is when we make a declaration to ourselves that our needs and our wants are important.

And the onus is on us to express them to the people that we share space with,

To the systems that hold us up or tear us down,

To our workplaces,

To ourselves.

If we don't express our needs and our wants,

How can anyone ever fulfill them?

And that's inclusive of us.

If we just think about it,

It's just a thought.

Expressing our needs and our wants puts it into action.

So what are your expectations of those needs and wants?

Are you ready to express them?

Are you ready to allow someone the opportunity to meet those expectations?

You may have been let down in the past and led down a path of disappointment,

But if we can let someone in,

If we can express to them with full authenticity and honesty,

What our needs and our wants are,

They may just surprise us.

Taking a big breath in and out,

Allowing yourself to settle in,

Remembering that your needs and your wants are important and that the responsibility of expressing them and allowing someone the opportunity to fulfill them is on us.

When you feel ready,

Opening the windows of your eyes.

There is never a need too small or a want too big that they aren't deserving of fulfillment.

Share them with those that you share space with,

Including yourself.

And start showing up.

I like the idea of doing this but I know in my heart my family/friends will not be receiving and act on it sadly. 😢
