Introduction.

Jam-packed idling cars in the drive-through.

A long line of impatient customers at the register.

A stout and steel-faced manager that is watching your every move.

Maybe you're lucky enough to have a job that you're excited about.

But statistically speaking,

This is becoming rarer.

Through this morning meditation,

You will set your intentions for entering your workplace as a place of practice today.

We are taking the crude materials of modern working and working them into the weapons of awakened love.

Let's take a couple of mindful breaths together to ground ourselves for this practice.

Feel the sensation of your lungs expanding and a cool breeze hitting your tongue and the back of your throat.

Come into your body,

Into this room,

Now.

If you're sitting on a cushion,

Observe that your back is straight and that your buttocks rest firmly on the cushion.

Choices.

Today,

You have a choice.

Are you going to go to work?

This question might seem strange until you observe it further.

Living here in the United States,

Or most developed countries,

Working is a choice.

Yes,

It may seem like an impossible choice to make.

Working means paying the bills,

Feeding the children,

And keeping a roof over our heads.

But the fact remains,

Working at your current job,

Or any job,

Is a choice.

Will you choose to go today?

Good.

Now that we have decided that the power is back in your hands,

That you are making the decisions today,

Let's stretch our muscles further.

Setting our intentions.

Let's set our intentions for our work day.

I will start by providing a launch pad of intentions and then provide space at the end for you to add anything that your particular work situation calls for.

Today,

I enter my life and my work as a place of growth and learning.

I realize that the difficulties I experience today with others provide an opportunity for the deepening of my self-understanding.

Today,

I carry myself with a light-hearted mindfulness of the people around me,

The sensations in my body,

And anything that arises that needs to be noticed.

Today,

At work,

I ground myself in mindfulness.

I come back to my breath in moments of busyness or frustration and allow them to dissolve in the deep peace of being.

Today,

I look for opportunities to be of service to others.

Today,

I find meaning in seeing with the eyes of my heart and giving with the hands of my heart.

In seeing and giving from the heart,

I look for opportunities to feed my customers' and coworkers' souls,

Sometimes with simple gestures like a kind word or a genuine smile.

Today,

I do my best at anything that I undertake,

Sweeping the floor,

Cleaning the toilet,

Running groceries under a scanner.

I do everything to the best of my abilities for the sake of my own integrity and expanding my circle of power.

Today,

I am aware of power struggles as they arise.

I let go of the need to control every situation and come back to the truth that the only person I truly control is myself.

I find a peace and relaxation in letting go of the power struggles with others.

Today,

I accept and invite new situations and tasks that make me uncomfortable.

I know that through doing new things and challenging my fear,

I grow.

I know that every time I step outside of my circle of comfort,

I grow in personal power.

I'd like to invite you at this point to silently or verbally express your intentions for your work day.

And as you do so,

Try to come back to a present mindfulness,

Your breathing sensation of being here in this room in this moment now.

Thank you for joining me for this practice,

And I hope you have a wonderful day at work.
