This Joywork lesson allows listeners to practice peace in several ways. First. we listen to a live recording of spring birdsong and harmonic chimes so we can feel the peace that nature brings. Then, we reflect on the mindfulness principle of non-judgment. Often our sense of peace is disrupted by the scripts we play inside our minds that tell us there is only one right way. Finally, we meditate in silence between two poems: "There are 15 Ways to Create Healing" and "This is How Honey Runs," both from Cassie Premo Steele's book, This Is How Honey Runs.

Today's theme is filling the well of peace.

We won't be writing today so you can get comfortable.

Maybe grab a pillow and blanket and just relax.

We are going to begin by listening to an audio I recorded in my backyard on a beautiful morning.

The wind was treating me to a concert with harmonic chimes and the birds were singing along and I wanted to share it with you.

So today just settle in,

Relax,

Listen,

And feel the peace.

Find body and spirit right now.

Realize that this peace is always available to you.

The best way I know to remind ourselves of this is to meditate.

Maybe you have been meditating for years and you're like,

Uh,

Duh,

I know this.

But maybe you hear the word meditate and think,

Yeah,

That's been on my to-do list for a while now.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Did you hear that?

I said it doesn't matter.

Either way is fine.

When is the last time you heard this?

When is the last time you said that to your kids or your boss or yourself?

Let's try it.

Repeat after me.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

You could try to say it out loud 10 times.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

Now let's do it another way.

Close your eyes.

Take a deep breath into your belly and sit.

Just sit.

The next time you get anxious or want to get up and start hearing that hammerhead of mind yammering inside,

Just say very gently to yourself.

Either way is fine.

It doesn't matter.

The importance of these phrases is to teach yourself to be gentle,

To practice the mindfulness principle of non-judgment,

To realize that often we are very hard on ourselves and we believe there is a perfect way to do or be,

But with most things perfection is impossible and this makes gentleness and peace seem out of reach.

Let's try a silent meditation for a few minutes now.

I'll meditate with you and keep track of time so you can let go of control and judgment and striving.

I'll begin and end our silent meditation today by reading a poem.

There are 15 ways to create healing.

1.

Ask yourself who you are.

2.

Know there is no right answer.

3.

Listen to the squeaky wheel.

4.

Grease it for once.

5.

Enjoy the silence.

6.

Ask yourself who you will become.

7.

Know there are many answers.

8.

Pick one.

9.

Know you have just begun.

10.

Start over each morning.

11.

Ask a question.

12.

Hear an answer.

13.

Act.

14.

Rest.

15.

Begin again.

This is how honey runs.

This is my release.

Be free.

This is where the flower grows.

This is my release.

This is where the flower grows.

This is what I know.

This is as deep as it goes.

These are not just words.

When something blooms,

It becomes.

This is how honey runs.

I am who I am becoming.

Smiling is the opposite of frowning.

How high can a dream fly?

Your life can get higher yet.

Your dreams are coming true.

Swim in the water that comforts you.

There are many shades of blue.

Let yourself play.

Who you are is what you are.

There is nothing more to do.

Be you.

Be you.
