The wisdom of Ayurveda says that all of creation is made up of the 5 great elements, known as the Panchamahabhutas. These elements are earth, water, fire, air and ether/space. All living things, including human beings, are made up of these elements. By connecting to them, we gain awareness of how they work within us, creating a greater sense of harmony and balance within our body and the world around us.

Hello and welcome to this meditation or contemplation on the five elements.

In Ayurveda it is said that there are five elements which make up all of creation.

These are earth,

Water,

Fire,

Air and ether or space.

Earth represents the ground itself,

It represents the mountains,

The hills,

The trees,

All solid matter contains earth.

The water element manifests as the oceans,

The seas,

Rivers and streams.

The fire element is represented in the sun which lights up this world and fire itself.

The air is in every breath we take and keeps us alive.

Ether or space is the great expanse of the sky,

It is the space in which everything is created.

These five elements are said to make up every living thing including human beings.

So within us we have these five elements.

So in this contemplation we are going to be connecting to the five elements within us and as we do so we become more connected to them and more in harmony with these elements and with the world itself and our lives.

So just finding a comfortable position whether you are sitting or laying and just allow your awareness to start to turn inside.

It is said that the space element or ether was created from the vibration of Aum.

From Aum which is said to be the sound of the universe from far away,

Space or ether was created.

Within our bodies the space element in Sanskrit called Akasha represents all the empty spaces within us.

The spaces between the cells,

The channels of the body,

The hollow space in some of the organs such as the stomach or the intestines.

It's the very space that exists within each and every cell.

It is the space between the breath.

As you contemplate the space element allow yourself to tune in and feel into those spaces within you.

Firstly just noticing the space between your breath as you breathe in notice that brief moment that pause after the inhale before you exhale.

After the exhale before you inhale that brief pause that space between the breath.

Notice that space.

Feeling now the space in which you occupy,

The space around you.

Feeling up into the space that your body creates.

How much space are you taking up in this moment?

Feeling into the space element within you.

And now we're going to be contemplating the air element.

In Sanskrit it's called Vayu.

The air element is connected to the sense of touch as the air brushes our skin.

The air element is with us in every breath we take.

As we inhale we're taking in air and as we exhale we're releasing air.

Allow yourself to connect to the air element within you.

The air element is connected to prana or life force energy which keeps us alive,

Which is carried through our circulation.

Providing oxygen to all the cells,

Tissues and organs within us.

Releasing to the air element within you and just welcoming that connection.

Now we're going to be contemplating the fire element.

In Sanskrit this is Teja or Agni.

The fire element represents the heat in our body.

It represents the fire of our digestion,

Our passion,

The fire and the light in our eyes.

It is connected to the mitochondria,

The energy within our bodies and the power of transformation.

Fire has the ability to transform.

We know that as wood is burned it changes from the solid matter into the form of heat and light energy.

Fire has the ability to transform and just as we digest our food this fire transforms the food into a substance that our body can use for nutrition and energy.

The fire element also processes emotions within us,

Transforming them.

Connecting to the fire element within you,

That transformative power.

And now let's connect to the water element within us,

Jala.

The water element is represented as all the fluids within our body,

The lymph,

The blood,

Our digestive juices,

Our tears,

Our sweat,

All the fluids within your body are connected to the water element.

The water element is related to how we flow with life.

Do we resist life or do we find it easy to flow?

How connected do you feel to the water element within you?

This water element carries nutrition around the body.

It too is connected with emotion and the sense of taste.

What is your taste of life in this moment?

Connecting to the water element within you.

And finally we'll be connecting to the earth element.

In Sanskrit it's known as Prithvi.

It is connected to the solid matter within us.

Connected to our bones,

Our teeth and the tissues within the body.

It is connected to our sense of stability and permanence,

Our sense of groundedness.

So take a moment to connect to the bones within your body.

Tuning into the bones,

The earth element within you.

Feel their support,

Their stability.

How grounded do you feel in this moment?

How supported do you feel in this moment?

All of this is connected to the earth element.

Feeling into the earth element within you.

And now being aware of all five elements,

The earth element in the bones,

In the teeth and the tissues,

The water element in the blood,

In the lymph,

In all the fluids of your body,

The fire element,

The power of your digestion,

Of food and emotion,

The power of your intellect.

Air every breath you take,

Moving through your body,

Giving life to the cells.

Ether,

The very space in which you occupy,

The space that is needed for you to exist,

The space between the cells and inside the cells.

By connecting into these five elements within us,

We more easily move in harmony with the world around us and with our bodies.

Feeling more connected,

More aligned and more balanced.

I hope you enjoyed this meditation.

Feel free to come back at any time that you want to connect to these elements.

It's a very grounding practice and quite simple.

Thank you for listening.
