The Life Force Meditation
In this meditation we'll experience the Life Force in our bodies and in our lives. The Life Force rotates planets around the Sun, at the same time it beats our hearts and breathes our lungs. Connecting with this feeling of Aliveness, we connect with the Universe.
Transcript
So find a comfortable place to sit or to lie down.
If you're already there,
Great.
And once you get comfortable,
Then you can close your eyes.
It's nice closing our eyes.
It really signals to our body and our mind that we're shutting down the outside world.
Usually most of our attention is on the outside world and the things that our senses,
The things that we hear,
That we feel,
Touch,
Smell,
The outside world.
But right now we're going inside.
We're shutting off all the outside stuff,
Except for hearing my voice.
And if you happen to fall asleep during this,
No problem,
Because it's nice to take a nap.
So with your eyes closed,
Notice your breathing with some curiosity.
Like you're looking out the window at a bird,
Like breathing.
And notice that natural inhalation and the natural exhalation.
Your body's breathing in.
Your body breathes out.
There's something soothing about noticing that.
Perhaps maybe you'll notice.
It's like a lullaby.
It's like you're being rocked in a cradle,
Like noticing you're breathing.
It has a way of relaxing you.
And maybe you're starting to feel that relaxation.
The breath comes in,
The breath goes out.
And however you breathe,
Through your mouth,
Through your nose,
It doesn't matter.
Whatever is natural.
So breath comes in,
Breath goes out.
And as you're taking this curious look at your breathing,
You can notice that you're not breathing yourself.
And you're breathing your body.
And as you're taking this curious look at your breathing,
You can notice that you're not breathing yourself.
It's being done for you.
Your body's breathing in.
So during the day,
You're doing all kinds of stuff.
Emailing,
Calling someone,
Making lunch,
Going out for an errand,
Picking up stuff,
Coming back.
Bunch of different things.
But you don't do your breathing.
Your breathing is provided for you,
As we can see.
Spontaneous process.
The body kindly takes in a breath and kindly lets out a breath.
And we don't really notice that,
But it's nice to notice it.
It's nice.
Because of this breath that we're being given right now,
That all of us are being given,
We're alive.
If we don't breathe for like up to three minutes,
Three to four minutes,
We're not breathing.
We're not breathing.
We're not breathing.
We're not breathing.
Up to three minutes,
Three to four minutes,
We're not alive.
We're not experiencing things anymore.
So this breath is pretty profound.
And based on the evidence that we're being breathed,
That we're not breathing ourselves,
It's a gift.
We're being given this gift.
And essentially,
It's the best gift that we could ever get.
Because as with other gifts,
Like people give us gifts,
We receive things from others.
If we weren't breathing,
We wouldn't notice those gifts.
We wouldn't notice those gifts,
All the things in our lives that are currently there,
We wouldn't notice them without our breath.
So this is really simple.
This breathing that's happening to us right now,
The breath is drawn in,
The breath is exhaled.
It's done for us.
Because of that,
We're here.
And we're experiencing.
You can hear my voice.
You have sensations in your body,
Feel it itch somewhere.
You can feel the pressure of the chair that you're sitting on or the bed that you're laying down on.
Without the breath,
You wouldn't experience anything.
So it's nice to notice.
Sometimes we feel like a lack in our lives.
Like,
I don't have enough,
Or I wish I had this.
But the great thing is,
You have the best thing there is.
Right now,
You have the best thing that you could possibly ever have.
This breath.
Your body inhales naturally,
Takes in that oxygen,
Goes into your lungs.
And your lungs working with your heart,
Send that oxygen-rich blood throughout your entire body,
Through all your veins,
Through all the capillaries,
To the tips of your fingers,
Tips of your toes,
The uppermost top of your brain.
And as a result of having that oxygen,
You're alive.
You're here.
So not only is your heart,
Not only are your lungs providing this experience of being alive,
But your heart too.
They work together.
Unseen,
Unnoticed.
And they don't even care.
They don't even care if you notice or not.
They work diligently while you're sleeping,
While you're doing other things.
They work diligently.
Relentlessly,
They do it.
And as a result,
You're here.
You're alive.
And it's not that you earned your breath,
Or even that you deserve it.
There's no reason to be alive.
Or even that you deserve it.
There's no,
Okay,
I've been good enough,
So I got this reward in my breath.
Your lungs and your heart don't care what you do.
They're basically giving you this gift because they love you.
Deceaselessly give you this gift,
Unconditional love.
You don't have to do anything to get your breath,
Or to have your heart beat.
Or for your body to circulate your blood so you can move.
We hear things and think and feel.
So the great thing is this isn't conceptual.
We're experiencing it.
As I'm talking about this,
You notice the natural inhalation and the natural exhalation of the breath.
You can put your hand in your heart and you can notice the ceaseless beating of your heart.
You're not asking for these things.
You didn't pray for them.
You know,
Gift.
It's a gift.
And as a result,
Here you are.
You're alive.
Regardless of what's happening in your life,
Whether really great things are happening in your life,
Or really crappy things are happening,
Or all the in-between things,
You're alive.
There's something wonderful about that.
There's something wonderful about that current of aliveness in you.
It's like a constant flame.
If you have a candle,
You light the candle.
Over time,
The candle slowly diminishes,
Moves downward,
But the flame stays bright and bold.
And same with all of us.
As the minutes tick by in our lives,
There's this life,
This constant life,
Which goes unnoticed because we only notice contrast.
If you're in a warm room,
Suddenly the temperature drops,
You notice that because of the contrast.
Earlier you had a meal,
You're full,
And then later on you feel the hunger pains because there's contrast there.
In the morning you wake up,
You feel energized,
Ready for the day,
That night.
Before you go to bed,
You feel tired.
It starts to contrast,
So we notice contrast.
And today we're doing something different.
We're taking a deep look within our side of ourselves and we're noticing that we're not feeling good.
We're not feeling good.
We're not feeling good.
We're not feeling good.
We take a deep look within our side of ourselves and we're noticing there's life here.
Sometimes people never notice this until they almost lose their life.
If you get sick,
Are you in an accident,
And you get close to death,
Then you recognize life.
You tend to recognize them,
Because as a contrast,
I might lose this.
But right now we're noticing this current of life in us.
That without it,
We wouldn't be able to experience anything in our lives.
All the people in our lives,
All the things we do,
All the stuff in our lives would be gone.
So it's quite wonderful to have this gift that's spontaneously given to us through our breathing.
And maybe by noticing this aliveness,
You might feel it as a current,
Perhaps.
A buzz,
A sensation,
A feel of vibration perhaps.
Even if it's really small,
Even if it's just a sense of that,
It's noticing that current of aliveness.
It's a life force.
It's the same energy that rotates planets around the sun.
And that same current breathes us and beats our heart,
Circulates our blood.
So when we think of it that way,
We might feel connected with it,
With everything.
If that current,
If that same current that rotates planets around the sun,
That creates stars,
Creates change of seasons,
That's the same thing that spontaneously breathes me and spontaneously beats my heart.
It's a chance that I might feel connected with everything.
And feeling connection is one of the best feelings that we can ever have.
When we feel separate,
We feel alone.
It's hard on us.
But when we feel connected,
It's quite enlivening.
It's like being in love with everything because we can relate to other things.
For instance,
In the kitchen,
You have different things.
The refrigerator,
The toaster oven,
The microwave oven,
The dishwasher.
All different things made completely differently.
But they all have electricity that runs through them that operates them.
And the same thing for us.
That's what we're talking about today,
The life force.
The same life force that's operating in each one of us.
It's the same life force.
Same life force that maintains life in a tree outside.
Or if you have a dog,
Your dog or your cat,
Your bird or your fish,
Our family member,
Our most clouds across the sky,
Creates raindrops.
And there's that feeling of connection again.
And even people that you don't know,
Maybe some people you disagree with and how they see the world or how they live in the world.
You know,
We're constantly through the news and social media being told,
It's like us against them,
Me against others.
It's hard to live that way,
Constantly.
To divide ourselves,
It's hard.
But we can get into a habit of it and we're certainly encouraged to do that,
Notice the differences and then create friends and enemies,
You know,
Based on that.
But today we're noticing our breath,
Something we have in common with everybody else who's alive.
There's a life force.
You're noticing the life force that operates you.
It's the same life force that operates people with tremendously different ways of doing things.
And you have to agree with what they do,
But on some level there's a feeling of connection.
So we don't live our lives in constant opposition,
But with an undercurrent of connection.
It's very healthy.
It's very healthy for our bodies and our minds to have that.
And all comes from looking within ourselves and noticing this spontaneous breath,
This gift of the breath,
This gift of the heartbeat.
And by gift means we're given it.
We didn't earn it.
We didn't ask for it.
It's given to us.
It's given to us in the most of what we do.
And as a result of that we're alive.
We're here.
And it can help to notice this,
To be aware of this life force within us that's operating us,
That we're filled to the brim with life.
When we're tired,
We're still filled with life.
Being tired is an experience in the physiology.
But it doesn't mean we're dead.
It means we're alive,
But we're tired.
So even when we're tired,
We're filled with life.
Life is there as a constant backdrop,
Constantly with us.
As long as we're alive,
It's constantly with us.
Constant,
That's a good word for it.
Because the rest of life isn't constant.
It's just that things are coming and going.
People come and go.
The things we do,
The activities we do,
They come and go where we live.
It comes and goes.
The jobs we have come and go.
Even things in our body come and go.
When I was born,
I didn't have hair.
And then I got hair.
And now I don't have hair on top of my head.
Things come and go.
Our bodies change.
Our circumstances in life change.
The beliefs that we have about life,
Those change too.
As long as we're alive,
What's always there is that life.
And there's something comforting in it.
It's really the only stability that we have while we're alive.
Life is constant change.
Because this is a life force,
It's vital.
There's vitality here.
And inherent in vitality is change.
So life is always changing.
Except that we're alive.
That's our stability.
That can give us comfort in the midst of difficult change.
Things happening that we don't like.
That feeling of being alive is there to support us in those times.
We can rely on it if we want to.
So life itself is very generous,
In other words.
And that's how it comes down to it.
Life is loving and generous because we're alive.
And circumstances in life are constantly changing,
But there's life here.
And you don't have to remember any of this.
You're like,
Oh yeah,
Now you know this,
And you have to remember it all the time.
You don't need to remember it.
You could never remember it again.
But on some level,
There's a part of you that knows.
And there's comfort in that.
So we're going to end our meditation now.
And you can take as long as you want to open your eyes.
Or you can keep them closed and just continue to relax on that aliveness.
And when you're ready to,
You can open your eyes and look around.
So thank you for exploring the aliveness with me.
It was great to take a look at this with you.
There's something about doing things together that makes them stronger,
Makes the experience stronger.
So I appreciate you being here.
And I wish you the best.
