Here we are.
We're gonna do a meditation that will allow us to experience what it means to be alive.
What it feels like.
To be alive,
To have this life that's within us.
That allows us to experience everything we experience.
And usually we don't notice what it means to be alive because we're always alive.
We only notice things that are in contrast.
So we're gonna do a meditation that gives us the experience of life itself.
So I'd like you to find a comfortable place to sit or to lie down and then close your eyes.
Feel the breath come into your body and the breath go out of your body.
Breath comes in,
The breath goes back out.
Like waves,
Waves in the ocean rising and falling.
There's something very relaxing about noticing the progression of our breathing,
Of our breath.
The breath comes in,
The breath goes back out.
Doesn't matter if it's coming through your mouth,
Coming through your nose.
There's no right or wrong way to breathe.
Whatever feels most comfortable to you.
And notice,
Take a moment to notice how you don't have to do the breathing.
The breathing's being done for you.
Breath comes in,
The breath goes back out.
Your body's breathing you.
You're not doing it.
It's being done for you.
And it's wonderful that it's being done for you because if you forgot to breathe,
That would be it.
You wouldn't be around anymore.
So it's great,
This spontaneous breathing,
This spontaneous breath coming in and going back out is a gift.
It's being given to you.
The evidence is right there and you're experiencing it.
The breath comes in,
The breath goes back out.
Your body knows what to do.
It's doing its job.
And as a result of that,
You're alive.
You're here.
You exist.
So basically you're being given this constant gift of life.
Because without this breath,
That's it.
You're no longer alive.
But you have this breath and here you are.
And it's so simple that it goes unnoticed.
We go about the things that we do in our day and we don't notice that we're being sustained by life itself.
Life is giving us this breath.
And it never says,
Oh,
You know what?
You didn't earn this breath.
Or you did this thing the other day,
Which I didn't like,
So I'm not going to give you any breath.
It gives you the breath.
So life must think really highly of you to be breathing you,
Just like you're experiencing right now.
This spontaneous breath,
Spontaneous intake of the breath and the spontaneous exhalation.
The same energy that rotates planets around the sun,
Creates stars,
Is giving you its breath,
Giving you this breath.
There's an energy there.
This energy that's facilitating this action of your breathing.
And you're watching it.
You're watching this love in action.
Because it is a gift of love.
It's unconditional.
Like I said,
You didn't have to earn this breath.
It's bestowed on you.
Maybe you can feel that as your body inhales,
As it takes in the breath.
You can feel perhaps the love,
The love from life itself as it gives you this life.
Inherent in the action is an unconditional love.
It means it goes beyond the intellect,
Beyond thought.
And as a result,
Here you are.
You're alive.
Again,
We usually don't notice this because we're always alive.
We don't notice things that don't change.
We only notice change.
In the mornings,
During the day,
The sun is up.
At night,
The sun goes down,
So we notice that.
We notice we have energy early in the day,
And later on we feel tired,
So there's change.
Sometimes we're happy,
Sometimes we're sad,
So there's change.
Inherent in life is constant change.
There's a vitality in life.
Nothing stays the same.
Except that you're alive.
As far back as you can remember,
You're alive.
And you're filled with life.
Your body's teeming with life.
As the result of this life force moving through you,
The blood is circulating through all the veins and all the capillaries.
And your heart is pumping blood.
It's moving.
Your lungs are breathing in the oxygen.
There's movement there.
The heart pumps that oxygen-rich blood through your entire body.
There's vitality in every aspect of that.
That's life.
It's flowing through you.
An unconditional gift of love from life,
Life itself.
Perhaps you could say that this life is your most valuable possession.
Out of all the things you have in your life,
If you didn't have this,
If you didn't have the life itself,
You would stop experiencing things.
You wouldn't be around anymore.
You would have no knowledge of anything in your life.
The people,
The things,
The activities,
They would all be gone.
So because of this one thing that you possess,
You have everything.
So it's fundamental.
This feeling of life,
This life that's within you is fundamental.
It's primary.
Things have come and gone in your life.
People,
Things that you've done,
Even your body has changed.
Things have come and gone.
The one thing that's always been consistent is that you're alive,
That you're here.
And we look at it this way.
We shine our awareness on this to realize how lucky we are,
How valuable this gift is,
Regardless of what's happening in our lives.
Life is a pendulum swing back and forth of good and bad,
Pain and pleasure.
There's no way to avoid that.
Life is half pain,
Half pleasure.
That's because life itself is vital.
It's vitality.
It's movement.
And movement is change.
So one moment we may be really happy.
Things are going our way,
Really grateful.
And the next moment things fall apart and there's pain and we don't like it.
And because life is vitality,
It's movement back and forth.
But underlying all that is life itself.
And there's peace in that.
There's peace in the recognition of that.
Underlying everything is this life force moving through me.
And as a result I'm alive.
And by noticing that it makes the highs and lows of life much more bearable.
Life becomes much more tolerable.
Life becomes more peaceful.
So that's why we're spending a lot of time on this experience of life.
And again one of the simplest ways of noticing it is noticing our breath,
Noticing the breathing.
And that we're being breathed.
And the most important thing in our life is being alive is given to us.
Usually without our noticing it.
It's kind of funny that we're alive and we don't really think about it.
And it's natural to get caught up in the day to day things of our lives.
There's nothing wrong with that.
Our attention is on the things that we're doing,
On the things that are happening around us.
And that's important so that we can focus on what we're doing.
But by talking about life in this way,
It makes us aware of this underlying presence of life.
That's always been within us.
That allows us to experience the things that we experience in our life.
It underlies everything.
And we don't have to remember any of this.
It's not important that we always remember,
Oh yeah I'm alive.
I'm alive.
Okay I'm alive.
I'm alive.
I'm alive.
We don't have to do that.
The knowingness is deeper than that.
The recognition that I'm alive is deeper than the intellect.
It's even deeper than the feelings,
The feeling level.
It's a subtle knowingness.
I exist.
I'm here.
So you may get caught up in your day or whatever is going on in your life.
Maybe there's something that's overwhelming in one way or another.
And then the remembrance comes back.
We notice our breath.
We remember,
Oh yeah I'm alive.
This problem that's coming on right now,
It's temporary.
Maybe it's short lived or long lived,
But at some point it'll go and I won't even remember it anymore.
I'm no longer alone in that moment because we're connected with that feeling of life,
Life itself.
Life not isolated just to us,
But inherent everywhere,
Inside and outside of us.
The recognition of life within you allows that recognition to expand outside of you.
It allows you to have a connection with others that may be completely different than you.
They may think and act completely different than you,
But they have that same current of life in them.
It's like in the kitchen you have a toaster and a refrigerator and a microwave oven and a dishwasher.
And they're all different.
They look different,
They do different things,
But they all run on the same electricity.
And the same goes for us and for others.
That same life force that operates us,
Operates,
Breathes your neighbors,
Breathes people you'll never meet in your life,
In other countries,
In other states.
Because it's that feeling of connection that's fulfilling.
There's so much pressure to notice our differences these days.
Our differences are encouraged because it creates drama and drama creates attention.
That's how the news,
Social media,
Etc.
,
They get,
They thrive on that,
Upheaval,
On differences.
And we get very involved in that,
But it doesn't really support us or give us much energy.
It can be very draining.
But what gives us energy is this recognition of this life within us and the same life in others.
Same life,
Not even just in people,
But in plants and animals,
Microscopic organisms.
Same energy that,
Like I was saying before,
Rotates planets around the sun,
That provides the energy that fuels the sun itself.
It's a force,
Force of movement.
It's a universal vitality.
And it's in us and it's in everything.
And maybe you're getting a sense of that or you're getting a feel,
An intuitive sense,
Just by our spending time talking about it like this,
In this kind of matter-of-fact way.
So we're going to end our meditation now.
You can take as long as you need to come out of the meditation or you can keep your eyes closed and just enjoy that feeling of life,
That vitality.
Whatever feels more fun to you,
Whatever you're drawn towards.
If you open your eyes,
You can look around the room,
Stretch,
Taking a deep breath.
And again,
There's nothing here that you need to remember.
It's like you turn on a light switch in a room.
You don't have to keep remembering that the light switch is on.
There's light in the room.
You're alive.
And you're here.
And that's quite wonderful.
So I enjoyed spending this time with you.
And I wish you the best.
And take care.
Bye.
