Earth is the element of stability and inertia -- nature's gentle reminder that we grow like trees. When stepping back from "doing" and relax into being, we can discover how our thoughts, beliefs, choices, and habits have coalesced into our current selves (inside and out). We'll explore this through square breathing, guided visualization, and metaphor, in an esoteric, expanded version of the mountain mindfulness meditation.

Sit comfortably,

Either cross-legged on a cushion or on the floor,

Or in a chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground.

Feel your sit bones as you focus for a moment on your foundation for this practice.

Earth is the element of grounded stability,

So let yourself be stable and grounded in your posture.

Let your body begin to relax as you feel yourself begin to anchor in the ground beneath you.

Let your spine be just a little straighter,

Creating just a bit more space in your core for you to breathe in and breathe out.

Let your belly relax as you sink into your seat.

Let your shoulders relax.

Allow your jaw and your brow to relax.

Let yourself just arrive in your body in this moment,

Now.

For the next 20 minutes,

You have nowhere to be but here and nothing to do but breathe with awareness.

Breathing in and breathing out.

We'll draw upon the breath now to further ground,

Letting its even cadence relax your body and nervous system.

We'll breathe in a square pattern,

Inhaling,

Holding,

Exhaling and holding for the same length of time.

As you breathe in,

Breathe in deeply to the belly and as you exhale,

Pull your belly towards your spine,

Letting the breath out fully.

Now exhale completely and begin breathing in for 4,

Continuing on your own now for just a few minutes.

Inhale,

Continuing on your own now for just a few minutes.

Wherever you are in your sequence,

At the end of your next exhale,

Let your breathing be normal,

Allowing the intelligence of your body to regain control of your breath once more.

Take a moment now to perceive the relaxing effects of this breath on the body.

Now take a deep diaphragmatic breath,

Hold,

And as you breathe out now,

Imagine yourself breathing into roots of light that extend downward from your base.

Let your breathing be normal,

And yet let your awareness continue to expand with every exhale,

Reaching your roots deeper and wider,

Anchoring you to the safe,

Nurturing presence of the earth.

Your roots go both deep and wide,

And you feel stable,

And it's easy to sustain this calming,

Grounded space.

I invite you to build upon the foundation of your roots now.

So picture a mountain in your mind's eye.

It can be somewhere you've been that touched you,

Or a picture that you remember,

Or somewhere entirely original.

Regardless,

Let the mountain you imagine be significant.

Let it be a scene that resonates with your being.

As you behold the majesty of elemental earth before you,

Notice its intricate beauty,

The details of the slopes and edges,

Of the cliffs and peaks.

Notice the way the sun casts part of it in light and part in shadow,

The way the earth folds upward and pierces the sky,

And the deep-rooted stability of its shape,

A shape that mirrors your own.

Just observing,

You breathe in and breathe out.

Now allow yourself to begin to merge with this mountain,

Letting yourself begin to embody the patient,

Stable energy of elemental earth.

Let your head become the high peaks,

Your arms and shoulders the cliffs and slopes,

Your seat and legs the basin,

And your core the mountain itself.

Let yourself embody the stable,

Enduring presence of elemental earth.

Patient like the earth,

You,

The mountain,

Are the witness as life moves in its cycles around you.

And all the while,

You stay,

Breathing in and breathing out.

As spring approaches and unfolds,

Your mountain blooms with new life.

The gentle slopes and basin around you become alive in myriad colors,

Shapes,

And smells.

The bright blue sky that silhouettes your peak lets the fresh air of spring whip through your valleys,

As this is the time for newness,

For motion.

And you are both the willow that bends and the mountain that channels the wind.

As you breathe in,

You breathe in the blue of the sky and the energy of the air.

Breathing in the wind,

You charge yourself with prana,

With the energy of life itself.

The energy of spirit that moves even mountains such as you.

As you breathe out,

You ground it in the earth,

Letting your mountain body heal and renew.

But still,

You stay,

The mountain,

Rooted and not carried away.

And you breathe in and breathe out.

You witness spring become summer and watch the flowers of your mountainside become deep greens,

Lush with growth.

The highest reaches of your mountaintop stay arid and cool,

While your basin and sheer sides warm with the summer heat.

And even as rain becomes seldom and your greensides become brown,

Giving way to fires that burn through your basin,

You tolerate impatient waiting.

Staying as you always have,

You,

The stable,

Rooted mountain.

Because you know in your grounded core that these challenging fires keep nature's balance.

They nurture the ground with nutrients for seasons and cycles to come.

Just as the fires of your life test and mold you.

Nature doesn't hurry and yet all things are accomplished.

So you let the heat in as you breathe in and breathe out.

As the mountain,

You stay rooted as time and experience moves around you.

You watch as the days begin to shorten and the air becomes cool.

And just like spring,

Your tree covered slopes burst forth in color once again as autumn arrives.

Through rain and fog and sun,

You begin to slowly let go of the beauty around you.

Your hillsides of gold and yellow become orange.

And then red.

And then brown.

As leaves begin to fall and a full harvest moon illuminates your sky,

Both in day and night.

This season is one of manifestation and of gratitude.

Of returning energy back to the earth and back within.

And so you return to your core,

Gently falling back into the heart of the mountain.

Where you find gratitude for the incredible abundance of life all around you.

You are blessed simply because you are.

You and grounded,

Patient,

Elemental earth.

Breathing in.

And breathing out.

Centered within,

Embodying the mountain in your mind.

You begin to watch your head's peaks become snowy.

A snow that begins to accumulate down your slopes.

With winter arrives a different type of beauty.

One of stark,

Monotone color and quiet.

Even when clouds cover your sights with snow,

You sit in quiet introspection.

Sitting here.

Assimilating in the spacious quiet.

As the land around you and within you also moves deeper inside.

Staying in presence,

You embrace the clarity of the cold.

Because just like summer heat,

It too will soon transform.

But in this quiet,

You can also perceive the way the earth around you and within you is recharging.

In a slow,

Graceful preparation for spring.

And yet now,

You can release all that will being.

Because staying quiet,

Here and now is all that matters.

So you breathe in.

And breathe out.

Centered here in the mountain,

You breathe with the earth itself.

Every inhale.

A season.

Every exhale.

A cycle.

Centered here in elemental earth,

You are the grounding point for air,

Fire,

Water and space.

And perhaps now,

As you step back,

You can even begin to perceive the lines of your own inertia.

The way your mindset and your beliefs and your choices become the story of your experience now.

So let yourself embrace your own inertia as you accept the organic beauty of your mountain.

Let yourself just be here,

Embraced by the safe,

Sustaining warmth of the earth.

This was incredible! I very much enjoyed it! You have beautiful analogies that are so eloquently described. It made me think of not only grounding in this moment but also how to remain grounded through different seasons of life. A beautiful lesson. Thank you! 🙏🏼
