Self-Enquiry is an awareness of the awareness itself. It leads us beyond duality, because the object of meditation (the “I”) is ultimately revealed as the Subject itself (the transpersonal Consciousness). In order to let the question “Who am I?” bring us closer to our real nature, or in other words, to truly ask “Who am I?” in an efficient way, a certain understanding and spiritual maturity is necessary. Join our amazing teacher Elliot on this powerful journey of Self-Discovery.

Begin this meditation by asking yourself who or what will experience this meditation.

This is the classic self-inquiry question of who am I?

You will never find true satisfaction in the world as it is bound by impermanence.

How can we truly be satisfied when life is constantly changing?

In fact,

It is a constant flow of change,

A transient state of momentary experiences we call life.

Ancient teachings turn our direction internally,

Opposed to modern teachings that direct our being externally.

The external world,

As glamorous as it can be with all its bright lights and beautiful objects,

Is only a temporary experience.

If you identify your being with the external world,

Then you will limit your being to the subject of change,

Ultimately creating suffering as you will inevitably one day have to let go.

So who are you then,

If you are just a visitor to this earth,

Here to experience with your senses the world in which we call life?

Life is moving through you like a river.

All forms of identifications are just concepts,

Mental constructs,

Inner projections that you believe are a part of your existence,

A piece of your reality.

In self-inquiry,

We simply ask,

Who am I?

Or what am I?

Who is having this experience?

When you look to see who is having this experience,

You don't find anyone.

There's nothing there.

The person experiencing cannot be experienced just as the eye cannot see itself.

You don't find anything,

Nothing you can touch or see or hear.

When nothing is discovered during self-inquiry,

The mind gets confused as it needs something to identify with.

But once you stop identifying the ego,

Your mind loses its grasp over you.

However,

If you do not have the spiritual maturity to embrace this answer,

Then the mind will take the steering wheel,

Controlling your existence and releasing an influx of thoughts to conceptualize over an experience that cannot be understood.

I want you to take in a deep breath now,

Really noticing your breath with all your attention.

Now,

Sense yourself and do not worry about inside or outside or going deeper.

Sense that you exist right now and then stay with that sense of I or me.

But do not worry about whether it is the right way of sensing yourself.

Simply sense yourself just as you are right now.

Once you sense yourself just as you are right now in this present moment,

Simply stay with that sensation.

If a thought or feeling arises,

Observe it as if you were watching a big screen,

The big screen of life.

It's like you were really watching the screen,

Routine it.

Be the perceiver to all of your thoughts and emotions.

Just simply let go of all control and surrender.

And I mean really surrender with all your being to this experience.

Be the perceiver to all of your thoughts and emotions.

Just simply let go of all control and surrender with all your being to this experience.

As the wise man once said,

I am an expression of the infinite consciousness being aware of itself.

Rest in your I AM state of consciousness and sensations for the rest of this practice.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Just rest in the openness of this question without any mental obstructions.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Subtract every thought and emotion that enters your field of experience during this time.

Now take a few deep breaths and come back to your breath.

Center your awareness back into this room.

We are now approaching the end of this meditation.

So may the blessings of these practices awaken your inner wisdom.

Namaste.

I recently suffered a severe depressive episode and feel a sense of loss of who I am or who I ought be and will allow my thoughts and feelings comtrol me; I’m very much wrapped up in them and often see the world from my thoughts instead of at them like a curious observer. This meditation is very in alignment with the teachings of ACT therapy in which I participated and you helped put things back in perspective for me and will be coming back to this meditation , as I found it very effective . Time to give up control!!

I will be listening to this meditation many more times. At age 65 I don’t know who I am. A lot of that was rooted in a childhood that told me who I was instead of helping me discover the real me and feel confident about who I am. This meditation is a wonderful beginning 🙏🙏🙏

I just discovered this one. I will revisit often. It asks the essential question. Who am I? Hard to know sometimes even at age 69. Still sorting through all the programmed thinking. Thank you Elliott. Namaste. Thank you. I seek to reach that place where th I is gone and never reappears. I accept that permanence is unattainable. That in itself brings great peace. I can step back and see I am not my thoughts or my body. I am is a concept I let go of throughout each day. As the Beatlea said. I am you and you are me and we are we and we are altogether.
