Allow yourself to feel fully – the walls around the heart melting – in this lovingly guided version of the practice of Tonglen for cultivating compassion and qualities of the heart. Sometimes, we feel so alone in our suffering. May we be reminded that we are deeply connected to all life on this planet. In a world that needs kindness and coming together more than ever, this practice supports us to be with any pain we might be feeling in a loving way, and to live more from the heart.

Beloved one,

I know your heart is aching,

So is mine.

This world is filled with so much pain and sorrow.

There are many joys,

But when the heart is heavy,

When the heart breaks,

It's difficult to remember.

Sometimes we feel so alone,

Lost.

We carry this burden of pain without realizing we can't even see the world clearly.

We can't feel the beauty or everything that is actually good in this moment.

This blanket of pain takes over.

Sometimes we just need to be reminded that there is a reason for living.

That we are loved.

That the depth of pain in this moment will not last for forever,

Even though it feels like it will.

And probably most importantly,

Even though we might not admit it to ourselves.

The deep longing to know we are not alone.

So let us move into a sacred practice,

Giving ourselves permission to feel the depths of this pain.

And to know that we are not alone.

To awaken the qualities of the heart,

Even if it feels impossible in this moment.

If the eyes are open,

Allow them to close.

Find your body in a position that is alert and relaxed at the same time.

Begin to breathe more deeply.

Take a deep breath in.

And then exhale fully and completely.

Another deep breath in,

The belly and the chest expand.

Exhale fully.

One more breath like this.

Feel how the body is becoming more settled as you breathe consciously.

Allow the hips and the pelvis to sink deeper into the support beneath you.

Feel the knees begin to relax apart.

As tension in the lower body melts into the earth.

If it feels good,

You can relax the hands on the thighs,

The palms upward toward the sky.

Breathe into whatever pain is present for you,

Whether it be physical,

Emotional,

A sense of mental anguish,

Take a breath.

Come aware of how this pain feels in this moment.

Acknowledging whatever you are experiencing without judging it.

Without making yourself wrong for feeling this way in this moment.

Allow your awareness to expand encompassing the town or city that you live in.

Aware of all of the people that live here.

Expand your awareness even further through the state or province.

Through the entire country.

Until you become aware of all of the human beings all over the planet right now in this moment.

There are people that you will never meet that are experiencing the same pain that you are going through right now.

Begin to become aware of all of the people all over the planet that are also suffering in this moment.

A mother who has lost her child.

A family member with cancer.

People starving.

There is so much pain in the world and it often increases when we feel we are suffering alone.

So let us take a breath and as you breathe in,

Breathe in all of the world's pain,

All of the pain you are feeling in this moment and as you exhale,

Exhale love.

Sending waves of love and kindness to all of those who are hurting in this moment.

The inhalation draws in all of the world's suffering and the exhalation is a breath of love to the entire planet.

Begin to breathe in this way,

Creating space inside to welcome,

To allow all of this pain and with each exhalation feel the heart soften,

Expand as you pour your love,

Your compassion on the world.

Give yourself permission to feel fully as you breathe in all of this pain of so many men,

Women and children all over the planet.

And activate your sacred heart that knows love beyond any pain,

Beyond the mind and gives it wholeheartedly.

Continue this practice for some time,

Allowing all of the pain of the world in with your breath and sending waves of love,

Waves and waves of kindness and compassion from the heart.

Feeling learning partners,

Quit 너에 이용한다 You You As you ready,

Let us take a deep breath in Exhale through the mouth You can release this practice Bring your awareness to the heart center Breathe gently into this space As you breathe in,

Let your breath out Breathe gently into this space Feel the softening of the heart The opening and receptivity That comes when we allow ourselves to feel And remember how deeply,

Deeply connected we are to others in every moment You can feel the softening of the heart May all be happy May all be peaceful May all be free May all be happy May all be peaceful May all be free May all be happy May all be peaceful May all be free Thank you beloved one I'm so grateful for your time today To be with what is To allow the walls around the heart to melt And the awakening of your beautiful precious heart You You You

I first encountered Tonglen practice from Tibetan Buddhism through Pema Chodrön’s teachings. Due to my own already heightened awareness of the suffering of others around this beautiful earth, it was personally far too painful for me to go through this kind of meditation process. Given my own personal history of trauma, I risked being further traumatized and utterly overwhelmed by the extraordinary suffering going on everywhere on this planet at the exact same time. Somehow, this time, when my own suffering, both medical and psychological, is particularly intense, I was able to listen to this guided meditation multiple times before attempting to do it. Remarkably, I succeeded; I went through this process a few times in a row without needing to turn it off. It felt sad but didn’t flood me with overwhelming thoughts. It was actually comforting to be able to send out focused thoughts of love, healing, and peace to all others who are suffering.
