Hi,

This is Brooks and it's good to be here with you.

Today we're going to talk about the weight of clutter.

Clutter has a tremendous weight on our lives.

It's this denseness to it,

A heaviness.

And I noticed that on some of the first jobs that I ever did.

We'd find things that was clutter for the person and we'd load them up in plastic bags.

Things that would either go to trash or to charity.

And what I noticed was that the weight of the bags of clutter was heavier than it should have been.

For what was in those bags I always got that sense like this shouldn't be this heavy.

And it's the weight of clutter.

There's something about the things that no longer serve us that have a dead weight to it.

I mean literally.

It deadens a person's life.

And it's a physical tangible thing that you can notice.

And the thing is you can get used to this weight.

I mean living around that weight it can become a normal thing.

I mean we acclimate this stuff and we acclimate the pain.

So being held down by this weight of the clutter it can become a regular thing,

A normal thing for us.

But I guarantee you that once you start discovering what clutter that you have and start to remove it,

It's a buoyant feeling.

It's a tremendously uplifting feeling because you're removing some heaviness.

This dense heaviness.

And we're creatures of action.

We're creatures of movement,

Of life and energy.

So to be held down by something,

To have our flexibility taken away,

Our vitality taken away by the weight of clutter,

We're gonna suffer.

But you know we're going up against this idea that we're not enough.

That we need more things in our lives to become more ourselves,

To become more valuable ourselves.

So we tend not to really question the things in our lives.

We just have this impulse to gather things and to hold on to those things that we gather and then get more things.

But no one's truly happy living that way.

And it's because it's a heavy weight,

A depressing weight.

And that goes against our nature.

I mean everybody has their differences in their own ways.

But essentially the thing we have in common is this feeling of vitality,

Of flexibility,

Of movement,

Of energy.

You can feel it in your body.

There's a vitality there.

There's a life.

There's a flow.

And when that's diminished,

When that's held back,

It's hard on us.

It takes its toll.

And I see that whenever I go to work with someone,

There's always that feeling like they're under the weight of something.

It's like a horse that should be out running through fields but it's like contained in one tiny box and can't move.

And once people start to question the things in their lives and they start to find that clutter and begin to remove it,

That vibrancy,

That vitality,

That flow comes back.

You can see it as if there's this heaviness in the air and it's being taken away.

And it's wonderful.

I mean I often describe it as people getting their lives back.

And that's true because we're creatures of vitality and life and energy.

And if we don't have that,

Then our life is diminished.

Our nature is taken away.

So I'm here to encourage you to give it a try.

To start to take a look.

To look around and start to notice with a curious eye,

A curiosity.

Like where's that weight in my life?

Where's that dense dead weight?

You know there's a radar that's built inside all of us,

A discriminating radar to remove,

To find and remove things that hurt us,

That are hurting us.

And again this goes against that idea that you know we're not enough and we need things.

The more things we get in our lives,

The more valuable we are.

The more activities that we do,

The more things that were the people,

The things that were recognized for,

Then suddenly we become valuable.

This is calling that into question and saying that you're already valuable as you are,

Guaranteed,

Regardless of what you have or don't have in your life.

So as you start to look around,

Discover and remove the things that don't serve you,

You feel that buoyancy come back into your breath,

Into your thoughts,

Into your heart,

Into the cells of your body.

Again it's truly getting your life back.

And as we were talking about the other day,

It is freedom.

To be removed,

You know removing these shackles of the clutter,

You become free.

It's funny talking about weight.

I have had clients that have,

Just interestingly this came up sometimes,

Excuse me,

Where clients would have clothing that they no longer fit in.

You know they would often talk about like oh yeah once I once they lose like 10 pounds or 20 pounds,

Then I'll be able to wear these clothes again.

And there was this feeling like if they kept those clothes around that would help them lose the weight.

And then once they lost that weight they could put those clothes on and it would be great again.

But I'd often ask them what did it feel like to have those clothes sitting in their closet or in the drawers and seeing those clothes and know they can't wear them and feeling there's something wrong with them because they're not at a particular weight.

And they always talk about how lousy it felt.

I mean they had to take a look and notice that.

But living that way was hurting them.

They're hurting themselves by living that way.

And once they recognize that they would let go those clothes that they no longer fit in anymore.

And there's this feeling that they felt better about themselves as they were in that moment.

Where previously they felt like they weren't enough because they didn't weigh a certain amount.

And then once they accepted themselves there was this ease.

And again this feeling of freedom.

I'm okay as I am.

The weights have been removed.

Like I got my life back.

So I hope that by talking about this creates again this curious feeling.

This curiosity.

This wanting to know like where is the dead weight in my life?

I really want to know because I want to feel that buoyant alive feeling.

And I'm really tired of living in a particular way that says I'm not enough.

And I have to be a certain way.

I have to look a certain way.

I have to have certain things.

I have to be seen by myself by others in a particular way of whatever.

And then I'll be okay.

Maybe you're feeling tired of living that way.

And wouldn't it be great to be I'm enough as I am.

And I want to remove the weights that are reducing me.

That are diminishing my life.

I'm going to remove those weights.

And I want to feel free again.

And light basically.

There's a tremendous lightness that comes from removing the clutter.

And again it's not that all the clutter has to be gone or if you just start feeling that.

You feel it right away with that first piece of clutter that you let go of.

That first thing that you realize oh this does this doesn't serve me.

Maybe it did for 15 years but it doesn't anymore.

Or maybe I thought it did and it never did.

Or I really wanted it to and it's just not going to.

And you let that thing go and you feel this relief.

And the relief is one of the best feelings in the world.

And relief is pain dropping away.

The weight falling away.

So I wish you the best in your looking and in getting your life back.

And take care.

Bye.

Thanks, Brooks. I have drawers I’ve been avoiding for years because they may or may not contain reminders of my marriage. I don’t want to forget the good times or the lessons, but avoidance isn’t the answer.
