Our thoughts arise as mental sounds in the form of monologues or dialogs. They also arise as non-verbal sounds or as mental images. Perhaps there may be a combination of some of these elements. In this guided meditation, we note the thinking process very gently and try not to get involved in the story of the thoughts. This is a great way to still our mind, especially when it gets caught in the midst of incessant thoughts.

Welcome to the guided meditation on Mindfulness of Thinking process.

This is the process by which thinking happens in the mind.

The thinking process occurs through mental images and mental sounds.

Mental sounds include verbal sounds in the form of monologues or dialogues.

Mental sounds also include non-verbal sounds.

In this meditation,

We will observe the thinking process happening in our minds.

It will help to detach ourselves from the flow of thoughts that never stop.

Take a moment to let the body settle in a comfortable position.

Relax the whole body.

Keep your head,

Neck and back erect but not rigid.

Keep the hands comfortably placed on the lap or on the knees if sitting.

Keep the hands on the sides if lying down.

Intentionally cultivate an attitude of patience,

Gentleness and kindness towards yourself.

Allow your eyes to gently close and tune in to the feeling of the breath flowing in and out of the body.

Focus your attention on the sensation of the breath moving past the nostrils or on the sensation of the breath moving into the belly,

Lifting it during each in-breath and receding gently on each out-breath.

Follow the breath as it comes in and goes out.

Now bring the awareness to the thinking process.

Focus exclusively on the flow of thoughts.

As thoughts flow by,

Mentally note the process of thoughts.

Are they arising as mental sounds in the form of monologues,

Dialogues or non-verbal sounds?

Or are they arising as mental images?

Perhaps there may be a combination of some of these elements.

Perform this noting very gently.

Try not to get involved in the story of the thoughts.

When there are no thoughts,

Gently bring your attention back to the breath.

Now bring the awareness to the thinking process.
