The Buddha taught there are four nutriments we take into our body and mind: edible food, sense impressions, volition, and consciousness. Observing how we consume these nutriments can allow us to live a more joyful life. This meditation guides you towards observing if you consume each nutriment in a way that preserves compassion, well-being, and joy in your body and in the collective body of our society and our earth.

Breathing in,

I can feel the inhale in my body.

Breathing out,

I can feel the exhale in my body.

Breathing in,

Feeling.

Breathing out,

And feeling it.

Breathing in,

I'm aware of my whole body.

From the top of my head to the tips of my fingers and toes,

My entire body,

Just as it is in this moment.

Breathing out,

I allow my body to settle and find a little more ease.

Breathing in,

My whole body.

Breathing out,

Finding ease.

Breathing in,

I'm aware of how I nourish my body with edible foods and drink.

Just remembering and being aware of all the ways in which I nourish my body with food and drink.

And breathing out,

I notice,

Does this way of consuming food and drink preserve compassion,

Well-being,

And joy in my body and in my consciousness?

And in the collective body and consciousness of my family,

My society,

And the earth?

Breathing in,

Aware of the edible foods and drink that I take in,

That I consume.

And breathing out,

Noticing how that food lands in my body and consciousness,

And the greater body and consciousness.

Breathing in,

I'm aware of the kinds of things I bring in through my sense doors,

The kind of things I look at and read,

The kind of things I hear,

And the kind of things I taste.

Just generally all the things I bring in through my sense doors,

Just becoming aware.

And breathing out,

Noticing again,

Do these things I bring in support,

Compassion,

Well-being,

And joy in my body and the body,

The collective body and consciousness?

So breathing in,

Aware of what I'm bringing in generally through my sense doors.

And breathing out,

Just noticing whether and how they bring compassion,

Well-being,

And joy.

Breathing in,

And bringing to mind some of the current goals that you have in your life,

The kind of things you're aiming for.

More likes on social media,

Or a different place to live,

Or more health.

Just noticing what are the current goals you're carrying in the back of your mind for yourself,

Or your loved ones,

Or the world.

And breathing out,

Noticing,

Do those goals that you have in mind,

Will they,

Do they preserve compassion,

Well-being,

And joy in your body and consciousness,

And in the collective body and consciousness?

Breathing in,

Aware of your goals in your life.

And breathing out,

Noticing whether they bring joy,

Compassion,

And well-being.

Breathing in,

Notice the kind of things you think about all day long.

The thoughts that come back that you might ruminate on,

Or just consider regularly.

Just noticing what's often in your mind,

On your mind.

And breathing out,

Notice whether those,

That way of thinking,

That consciousness,

Brings compassion,

Well-being,

And joy into your body and consciousness,

And in the collective body and consciousness.

So breathing in,

Noticing the contents of your mind,

The regular contents of your mind.

And breathing out,

Noticing if it brings compassion,

Well-being,

And joy.
