What does it mean to have a regulated nervous system?
As someone who connects deeply with Mother Earth,
I love to take the inspiration from what I see in nature and translate that into something that's helpful.
So if you've ever watched a nature program,
You know,
Animals,
They often eat other animals.
And so if you've seen a scenario where an animal has been under attack,
They often do really interesting things.
Some of them play dead,
Some of them run faster,
Some of them puff themselves up.
All different kinds of things happen.
And each one of those is actually a nervous system response,
Right?
Fight,
Flight,
Freeze.
Each one is a nervous system response.
And so in a healthy regulated nervous system,
A stressor comes in,
An animal that is threatening us,
Or in a human life,
A million and one different things,
A stressor comes in,
And we have that nervous system response of fight or flight or freeze.
And then once the stressor is gone,
We come back to regulation.
But what is happening in our stressful lives,
The 24-7 access to information,
The continual dinging of technology,
Lights everywhere,
All of these things have an effect on our nervous system,
And they keep us in our stress response.
So as humans,
Instead of having the opportunity to be regulated most of the time,
And then just have a stress response,
And then come back to regulation,
Many of us wind up stuck in that stress response.
And of course,
Our bodies are not designed to handle that.
That means we are more susceptible to disease,
That we are more immunocompromised,
That our organs are working harder,
That everything about us in our physical body has to up its game just to maintain.
And over the long term,
This has detrimental effects on us.
So we need to learn how to regulate our nervous system so that we can respond to the threat rather than constantly react to everything that is happening around us.
I hope that's been helpful for you.
I'd love to know what questions,
If any,
Have come up.
I'm Anita Kaiser,
And I hope to connect with you soon.
Thank you so much,
Love.
