Welcome.
The term monkey mind is a Buddhist concept that describes a state of restlessness
and an inability to control our thoughts.
In today's practice,
I will be speaking directly
to the monkey mind.
You can try to absorb my words or you can imagine that your own
compassionate heart and wise mind are speaking to that busy monkey mind.
Feel free to sit or lie down in a comfortable position or you can listen to these words
any time.
Let's begin with a couple of slow,
Deep breaths.
Dear monkey mind,
You move so fast from one thought to another,
Trying to get it all figured out ahead of time.
Such a busy,
Overworked mind.
I know you're just trying to make sure everything gets done and get everything figured out.
The world is moving at such an unnaturally fast pace and you've gotten caught up in all the
busyness,
Trying to keep up,
Comparing,
Competing.
You try so hard,
Dear monkey mind,
But here's what I want you to know.
When you bounce around from one stressful thought to another,
It leads this body to feel overstimulated,
Overactivated,
And unsafe.
This pumps out stress hormones and they don't feel good.
What also happens when you stay so busy and overactivated doing your monkey mind business
is that you drown out the wisdom of the heart,
The soft inner whisper of wisdom
that knows what we need in any given moment.
This heart knows if we need more fresh air,
More nature,
More meditating,
More deep breaths,
More water,
More support,
More comfort,
Quiet,
Fresh food,
Rest,
Music,
Dancing,
Or compassionate welcoming of emotions.
Or maybe our heart will let us know that we need less of something,
Less screen time,
Less news,
Less late nights,
Less rushing,
Less multitasking.
So would you be willing to work with me,
Dear monkey mind?
We are in this together.
I do need my wise mind to help with decisions and actions,
But I don't need you overthinking,
Rehashing,
And future tripping all the time.
It's not how our mind was designed.
I understand that you're only trying to help,
And you're responding to stressful things that
have happened and to the unnatural pace of life,
But we do have a natural system in place.
Our wise mind and heartfelt intuition can take care of it all,
And you can rest more.
Can we work together on this?
Can you settle down and take more rest breaks?
And I will get better at tuning inside more and listening to what we need.
I will take more deep breaths,
And I will listen to the soft inner knowing
of the compassionate heart and wise mind.
And you can settle down and slow down and know that heart and wisdom have things covered.
Let's try it now.
Can you let go of all the topics you've been juggling,
Dear monkey mind?
Can you release it all and rest,
And we can take some slow,
Deep breaths?
Let's feel the safety of this moment and let life unfold.
